After leaving Jordan grunting behind, I headed back to the ballroom.
“ Where have you been? I have been looking for you.” Caspian's voice sounded as he approached me. He had this suspicious look on his face as he gave me a once over, making me frown.
“ I just came out to get some fresh air.” I replied just in time to hear footsteps approaching from behind us.
I rolled my eyes as his scent invaded my nose. What a perfect time to show himself up.
“ Fresh air huh?”
Caspian snorted, his eyes trained on Jordan who walked past us, but not without glaring at me.
“ I'm going inside.” I announced. I was not in the mood to listen to Caspian's sarcastic words which of course he was about to spout. Nothing was going to convince him that Jordan really followed me out and honestly, I was not the least interested in proving myself to anybody. They can all go to hell for all I care.
“ I came to inform you that I'll be leaving tonight.” Caspian's words had me halting in my steps.
“ Why? What happened?” I inquired, not understanding why he would make such a decision.
The summit tomorrow was just as important to him as it was to me. Just like me, someone close to him was on the verge of turning forsaken thanks to the crisis ongoing among and werewolves.
“ I got a call that my mother is awake and wants to talk to me. If I don't get back, I might regret it later considering his situation.” He replied, a sad smile on his face.
I nodded in agreement.
Since she asked for him, she might as well be on her last days of sanity.
“ Do you want me to come with you?” I asked, genuinely concerned.
Caspian's mother was like a mother to me.
When I arrived at that pack five years ago, she treated me like her own daughter. I found a second mother in her.
“ No need, you know what she wants the most in her life and you can't give her that. You also need to be here to represent the Red moon pack at the summit.” Caspian replied.
His words struck a chord and I found it hard to breathe for a moment.
“ Caspian…” I called, words getting stuck in my throat.
“ It's okay, I understand. I am not him so it's impossible for you. It's me who loves you, I'll have to deal with it.” He said, turning around and walking away.
“ Caspian,” I called out his name, making him halt in his steps.
“It's not because you are not him, I just can't lie to you and myself. I'm sorry.” I apologised.
He loved me but I didn't share the same sentiments with him and agreeing to be with him out of pity wasn't something I was going to hurt him with.
“ You don't need to explain anything, I understand.” He replied, his words shooting straight to my heart.
He was the first place who believed in me, supported me through thick and thin. He was the one who showed me that I deserved only the best. It's a shame I could never feel the same he felt for me.
“If I could turn back the time, I would choose to come to your life earlier. Maybe then, I would have made a different decision today.” He said before walking away.
I don't know why I suddenly found his words weird, like what decision did he make today?
Shrugging my shoulders, I made my way back to the party room.
The party was in full blast as people chatted over food and drinks. The dance floor was filled to the brim.
With no one to chat with and definitely not looking forward to seeing alpha Logan, I left the hall and headed to my room.
“ Milady, would you like to take a walk with me?” A voice sounded before me, making me lift my head to peer.
Before me stood the king in all glory, a smile plastered on his lips.
Looking at his outstretched hand, I contemplated my next move. With Caspian gone, I was bound to be bored the rest of the night.
“ Sure.” I replied, taking his hand and smiling back at him.
Norman took my hand and led me away. From the direction he was walking, I could tell he was walking away from the pack and heading to the woods.
“ You have something fun to show me in the woods?” I asked and the guy smiled mysteriously.
“ Maybe, maybe not.. You never know when you stumble upon a secret.” He answered.
I didn't bother asking more because it was clear the guy was hellbent on remaining tightlipped so I decided to enjoy the Serenity and the company.
“ There's something I don't understand, how did you end up in the Red moon pack as the alpha?” He asked, making me c**k my brows at him.
“ I see you have done your homework really well.” I answered and the guy just smiled, shrugging his shoulders.
“ For someone I have my interest in, of course I'm going to do my research. So tell me, from grass to grace, how did you manage?” He insisted.
“Caspian saved me when I was almost killed by rogues. Miraculously, I turned out to be the alpha's daughter they were looking for. That's how it happened, crazy right?” I asked.
Even I don't believe how lucky I was but after everything I went through, I embraced my new identity. Whether or not I was the real daughter the moon pack was looking for, I chose to take the position and became strong. It wasn't because I was a sucker for power, I just learnt the hard way that the weak will always be placed low in the food chain with no one to care about you or value your worthless life as they called it.
“ Do you trust him? Your beta?”
