Chapter Two
Solana POV
“What have you been thinking about?” A slight nudge brought me back to the desk I was sitting on and the book next to me. It had been a week since my mother's funeral, a week since the encounter with Marcel, my ex, and the puzzling words of my aunt. Marcel didnt tell me any more after then, and I have not seen him ever since.
“Uh- I’m-” I stuttered brushing aside my black wavy hair.
“I understand, honestly but you can always have the meeting whenever you want to, you own the place now. If you’re not in the right frame of mind, we can always revisit it and do it when you are on your A game.” My friend, Josh said calmly, he has been making sure I was okay ever since the burial.
“I’m just-” I stopped myself from completing the original intent of my words. “Thinking.” Marcel may have not said anything about sharing what we had heard in the room but I wasn’t sure if sharing with Josh was the right thing to do.
“You have been doing a lot of that since I saw you and Marcel coming downstairs together.” I groaned knowing that Josh wanted me to talk about it. I didnt think anyone had seen us.
“It was just a coincidental meeting. An unpleasant one.” I added staring down at my notes and my messy handwriting.
“Well, if that annoyed you then I think this one will too,” Josh said and while I scrunched up my brows in confusion the doors to the shop opened.
“He’s here-” I didn’t need to turn to know who was here. The entire Aura in the room changed and while I sighed and waited for him to walk to the counter, his footsteps were directed towards our seat instead.
“Hello Josh, do you mind sparing me a few minutes with your friend,” Marcel asked calmly and I protested.
“We’re busy, you’ll have to come back another time. Besides I don’t want to speak to you.” I stated.
“No, you’re not. You’ve been scribbling and your laptop has been disconnected from the internet for a while now.” He stated as though he had been with us the entire time. Finally, I raised my head to look at him, the sunlight poured into his eyes, highlighting his cheekbones and the small scar that sits beneath his right eye.
“What are you stalking me now?”
“No, no I am not. If you paid attention you would’ve known that the internet has been off for the past twenty minutes. It's not just what you think, it's a general thing and I know that you dont write like that.” He deduced like Detective Conan. A small snicker came from opposite me and I glared at Josh who shrugged.
“Look, I’m not here to fight with you. I just need to talk to you.”
“Now you want to speak to me? You didn't seem to have a problem when you disappeared on me a year ago.” My words seemed to fuel the tension and even Josh tsked.
“Ana-”
“I’ll give you two spaces while I go speak to that fine woman at the end there,” Josh said and slid out of his chair giving Marcel the space he needed.
“Can I?” He asked and when I raised my brow at him, he slid in, occupying the majority of my space. It was difficult to ignore him when he knew how to own a room.
“What is it? I thought we agreed to stay away from each other- oh right, you di-”
“Solana.” He only called me whenever there was anything serious to convey. “I know that you hate me for what I did to you but I need you to listen to me. Please.” he was pleading, he was begging.
“Fine, what is it?” I asked leaning back on my seat and crossing my hands over my chest.
“Did you say anything to Josh?”
“What-”
“Did you tell him anything?” He repeated, this time it was more firmly.
“No- n- no. I haven’t. I didnt think I should.” I replied.
“Good, it should stay that way. There also seems to be a problem, you can’t trust anyone else.” My eyes caught with the haze in his eyes and I swallowed.
“Except you.”
“Yes.”
“Wow, isn't that convenient for you Marcel? I should trust the person I hate the most. How original.”
“You dont hate me-”
“That's not up for debate Marcel,” it was difficult to make eye contact especially when my heart was racing with anger.
“Fine, you hate me but you should listen to me. You can't trust anybody with anything- and that watch.”
“This one?” my eyes drifted down to the watch on my wrist, it was an old watch my mother had given me for my eighteenth birthday. It had been a passed-down heirloom which did not look like much. It was old and somewhat out of style, even burglars wouldn't steal such a thing like this.
“Yes, you can't just wear it out like that especially when you heard that they want it.”
“Is this why you came here to speak to me? To warn me of dangers I’m already aware of?”
“I came to let you know that you can trust me Solana-” he stopped at the beeping of his phone, his brows scrunched up as he stared at the screen. Nothing ever got Marcel worried, but here he was, staring at the screen like he would break it apart.
“Marcel, is everything okay?” his eyes softened as he stared at me and then he turned to Josh and then back to me.
“Yes, but promise me that you will not do anything stupid before I come for you.” He said quietly and rose from his seat.
“What do you mean?” He was becoming more hard to understand as the seconds went by. “You’re not making any sense-” he reached out to touch my face and I let him.
“Just stay out of trouble Ana,”
