CHAPTER11

Sarah pov The first thing I felt was the softness beneath me, far too comfortable to be my dorm bed. My eyes fluttered open, the sharp scent of antiseptic hitting me. White walls, muted lighting, and the steady beeping of a heart monitor was the Academy’s infirmary. I blinked, trying to piece together the fragments of my memory. The fight, the transformation, the adrenaline coursing through my veins like fire. My body still ached, but the pain was dull now, manageable. “You’re awake.” The deep, familiar voice made my heart leap. I turned to see Xavier standing by the window, his silhouette sharp against the soft morning light. His usual composed demeanour was cracked, worry etched into his features. “How long…?” My voice was raspy, barely above a whisper. “Two days,” he said, stepping closer, his gaze never leaving mine. “You’ve been through a lot.” I tried to sit up, but the effort sent a wave of dizziness crashing over me. Xavier was at my side in an instant, his hand resting gently on my shoulder. “Easy,” he murmured. “You need to rest.” But rest was the last thing on my mind. “What happened to me, Xavier? That wasn’t normal.” His jaw tightened, and he exhaled slowly, as if weighing his words. “You’re right. It wasn’t.” Xavier pulled a chair closer, his movements deliberate. There was a gravity to him now, a seriousness that made the room feel smaller. “Sarah, what you experienced in your transformation wasn't random. It was inevitable.” My brows furrowed. “What are you talking about?” He leaned forward, his intense grey eyes locking onto mine. “For years, I’ve been researching an ancient prophecy, one that speaks of the Silver Star. A wolf born of both strength and light, destined to bring balance and protect our kind from a looming threat.” My heart pounded in my chest. “And you think that’s me?” “I don’t think so, Sarah,” he said, his voice firm. “I know.” The weight of his words settled over me, heavy and suffocating. My entire life, I’d felt like an outsider, different. But this? This was something I couldn’t have imagined. “Why me?” I whispered, my voice barely audible. Xavier’s expression softened, a rare vulnerability shining through. “Because you’re stronger than you realise. And because the world is changing, darker forces are rising, and they know who you are now.” A shiver ran down my spine. “Mira…” “She’s just the beginning,” Xavier said, his tone grim. “There are others, more dangerous, who will come for you. That’s why you need to be ready.” Later, as the infirmary quieted, Xavier sat beside me, his voice steady as he unravelled the truth of my past. “Your parents were part of a powerful lineage,” he explained. “They hid you to protect you, to keep you safe until the time was right.” I felt a pang of sadness. My parents were little more than a faint memory, shadows in the recesses of my mind. “What happened to them?” “They were betrayed,” Xavier said, his voice low. “By someone they trusted. But they ensured your survival, leaving behind clues and safeguards for when you were ready to embrace your destiny.” He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small, silver pendant. “This belonged to your mother. She wanted you to have it.” My fingers trembled as I took the pendant, its weight both comforting and overwhelming. The intricate design of a wolf howling at the moon was familiar, almost as if it had been waiting for me. “This is too much,” I said, my voice cracking. “How am I supposed to handle this?” Xavier’s hand covered mine, his touch grounding me. “You don’t have to do it alone. I’ll be here, every step of the way.” The following day, Xavier led me to a secluded part of the Academy grounds. The air was crisp, the scent of pine and earth grounding me as we walked. “You need to learn control,” he said, his voice calm but firm. “Your power is immense, but without discipline, it can consume you.” I nodded, determination simmering beneath my nerves. “Where do we start?” “Focus,” Xavier instructed, standing a few feet away. “Close your eyes and listen. Feel the world around you.” I did as he said, the sounds of the forest filling my senses. The rustling of leaves, the distant chirping of birds, the steady rhythm of my own heartbeat. “Good,” Xavier said softly. “Now, find the wolf within you. Let her guide you.” The warmth from before stirred within me, a quiet strength that had always been there, waiting. Slowly, I felt the shift, my body responding to the call. My vision sharpened, and my senses heightened, but this time, there was no pain, only power. When I opened my eyes, Xavier’s gaze was filled with awe. “You’re a natural,” he said, a rare smile tugging at his lips. I couldn’t help but smile back, a spark of confidence igniting within me. As we returned to the Academy, the weight of Xavier’s earlier words lingered. The world was changing, and with it, my role was becoming clearer. But the moment of peace was short-lived. Back in the infirmary, a shadow moved near the door. Zander stepped inside, his usual stoic expression replaced by urgency. “We have a problem,” he said, his voice clipped. Xavier’s demeanour shifted instantly, his posture rigid. “What is it?” Zander glanced at me, hesitation flickering in his eyes before he spoke. “They know. Word has spread about Sarah’s transformation. And they’re coming.” The air grew thick with tension, and my heart raced. “Who’s coming?” “Rogues, mercenaries,” Zander replied. “And someone far more dangerous, an Alpha with a vendetta.” Xavier’s jaw tightened, his protective instincts kicking in. “Then we prepare. They won’t touch her.” The gravity of the situation settled over me, but instead of fear, I felt a spark of resolve. I wasn’t the same girl I’d been before. And if they were coming for me, I’d be ready.
