Sarah’s Pov
The air around me felt heavy, the shadows of the hallway closing in. Mira’s laughter echoed in my ears, sharp and cruel. Her two accomplices loomed closer, their steps deliberate, predatory.
“You think you’re so special, don’t you?” Mira sneered, her voice dripping with malice. “Let’s see how brave you really are.”
My back pressed against the cold wall as the rogues advanced. Their eyes glinted with a dangerous light, their sheer size making me feel small and powerless. My pulse thundered in my ears, every instinct screaming at me to run, but my legs refused to move.
One of the men reached out, his hand rough and calloused, but before he could grab me, a fierce growl ripped through my chest. It wasn’t human, it was something primal, something wild.
“What the ” the man muttered, his hand recoiling.
I felt it then, a fire igniting deep within me, spreading through my veins. My vision sharpened, colours becoming more vivid, sounds more distinct. My skin prickled, and before I could comprehend what was happening, my body began to shift.
The pain was excruciating, like every bone in my body was breaking and reshaping. I dropped to my knees, a scream tearing from my throat, but it was swallowed by the beast emerging from within.
When I looked up, the world was different. I could see every detail, every movement, and the scent of fear from the rogues was intoxicating. My paws dug into the ground, and a snarl escaped my lips.
Mira’s smug expression faltered. “Impossible,” she whispered, taking a step back.
But I didn’t give her time to react. I lunged.
The first rogue tried to block me, but I was faster, stronger than I ever thought possible. My claws raked across his arm, and he howled in pain, stumbling back.
Adrenaline surged through me, my movements fluid and precise. Every growl, every snap of my jaws was instinctive, like I’d been waiting my whole life for this moment.
The second rogue hesitated, his eyes darting to Mira. “This wasn’t part of the plan!”
Mira’s face twisted in fury. “Finish her!”
The rogue lunged, but I met him head-on, our bodies colliding with a force that rattled the walls. He was strong, but I was relentless, my newfound strength pushing him back.
For a moment, it felt like I could take them all on, like nothing could stop me. But the transformation had taken its toll, my limbs growing heavier with each passing second.
Still, I refused to back down.
I sprinted through the darkened campus, my heart pounding with urgency. Xavier’s voice echoed in my head, his orders clear: Protect her at all costs.
The sound of a fierce battle reached my ears, followed by a bone-chilling growl. I rounded the corner just in time to see Sarah no, her wolf locked in combat with the rogues.
Her coat was a stunning silver, shimmering under the dim light, her eyes blazing with determination. She was holding her own, but I could see the strain in her movements.
Without hesitation, I leapt into the fray, my fists connecting with the nearest rogue. “Get away from her,” I growled, my voice low and lethal.
The rogue stumbled back, his lip split from the force of my punch. He glanced at Mira, who was now seething with rage.
“Zander,” she hissed, her eyes narrowing. “Always playing the hero.”
I didn’t bother responding, my focus entirely on Sarah. She was panting heavily, her wolf form trembling but still standing tall. I moved to her side, ready to face whatever came next.
Together, we fought, a seamless dance of strength and precision. The rogues, realising they were outmatched, began to retreat, their snarls fading into the night.
As the last rogue disappeared into the shadows, the adrenaline that had kept me going began to fade. My legs buckled, and I collapsed onto the cold ground, my body wracked with exhaustion.
I felt the shift again, my wolf form retreating, leaving me vulnerable and human once more. The pain was duller this time, but it still left me breathless.
Zander was at my side in an instant, his strong arms lifting me as if I weighed nothing. His face was etched with concern, his usually stoic demeanour cracked.
“Easy,” he murmured, his voice softer than I’d ever heard it. “You’ve done enough.”
I tried to speak, but my throat was dry, my thoughts scattered. The weight of what had just happened pressed down on me, the reality of my transformation sinking in.
Zander’s grip tightened slightly, his eyes searching mine. “Xavier was right,” he said, almost to himself. “You’re special, Sarah.”
His words stirred something deep within me, a mix of fear and hope. What did this mean? Who was I becoming?
The journey back to the Academy was a blur, Zander’s steady presence the only thing keeping me grounded. He carried me effortlessly, his warmth a stark contrast to the cold night air.
By the time we reached the safety of the Academy, my eyelids were heavy, my body aching in ways I couldn’t describe. But even as exhaustion pulled me under, one thought lingered.
This was only the beginning.
As Zander laid me down gently on a couch in Xavier’s office, his voice was the last thing I heard before sleep claimed me.
“Rest now,” he said softly. “You’ll need your strength for what’s coming.”
