SARAH’S POV
The cool breeze hit my face as Haylee and I left the café, but it didn't help calm the storm of feelings that was going through me. Haylee was as happy as always, and she was almost jumping as she put her arm around mine.
"You have to sign up for the finance competition, Sarah! Now is your big chance! A job as an intern at Steel Company is the grand prize!" she exclaimed, her joy obvious.
I thought for a while and chewed on my bottom lip. "Haylee, I don't know. What if I mess it up? What if I'm not good enough?"
Haylee stopped in her tracks and turned her serious face toward me. "Since you were ten years old, you've liked Steel Company. Sarah, this is something you've been getting ready for your whole life. "You're good enough."
I forced back the doubt that was rising in my throat. She was right. Since I was a kid reading about Xavier Steel and his business company, I had worked so hard to get here. It had always been my dream to work for his business and become like him. But the fear of failing was too much to handle.
"I guess you're right.I'll do it." While the words were heavy in my mouth, they made me feel excited as soon as I said them.
"You won’t regret it!" Haylee squealed and hugged me quickly before pulling me to the sign-up sheet.
Getting close to the board and writing my name down quickly made my heart race. Now I had to take the first step toward my dream. Like always, though, nothing good ever happened in my life.
"Well, look who thinks she can compete," a mean voice said, cutting me off. When I turned around to face Mira, the person who always makes me feel bad, I froze and my stomach turned.
Mira stood there with her arms crossed and a smug grin on her face. "Are you sure Sarah that you can win?" An omega? Please."
Even though my hands were getting tense, I tried to stay calm. I kept my voice steady and said, "I earned my place here, just like everyone else."
Mira laughed and threw her hair over her shoulder. "Yes, you did. You'll never make it, though, so don't fool yourself.”
I turned my back on her and wouldn't let her bother me. I had put in too much work to let her bring me down. Yes, she is right, I am an omega. I grew up in werewolves orphanage, as my parents have left in the south Calisna pack. I don’t know how they look, except their pendant I don't remember much.
I saw many kids to change at 18 but I couldn't transform, though I can talk to my wolf. Still many mocked me or thought that I am cursed werewolf.
I turned around quickly, walked away, and went to the storage room to get some things I needed for my job. But my heart sank as soon as I walked in.
A proud grin was on Justin's face as he leaned against a shelf.
He leaned against the shelf and took a step toward her. "Sarah," he barked. "Funny seeing you here."
I crossed my arms and got ready for whatever nonsense he was going to say. "What do you want, Justin?"
He smiled and looked mean with his eyes. "I think you've moved on quickly. Have you already slept with someone else? No less than an Alpha?" His tone dripped with condescension.
Even though my chest hurt, I wouldn't let him see how his words made me feel. "Justin, it doesn't matter who I choose to be with. Remember that we're done?"
His smile wavered for a moment, and then he moved closer, making it impossible to breathe. "Are you sure an Alpha would want you? You're just a person. A nerd. Sarah, don't fool yourself.”
“Everyone is not like you, a deceiver,” I shot back at him angrily.
He rolled his eyes, and smirked evilly. I really felt to punch on his face to wipe off his smirk.
“The man with whom you were yesterday was an Alpha of Stratic Pack. Being an omega like you, he must have used like I did,” he chuckles.
Deep down, I had to swallow hard. I felt like cold water was poured me, humiliation hit me. I wanted to lash out, but I held back. He might be right that an alpha like him, had used for one night stand but I gave it myself. It was not by force, I also wanted him.
"Go away, Justin.I don’t have time for your games anymore."
I thought I had a chance to get away when Mira walked into the closet, her eyes flashing with laughter. "Are you still pretending to be an innocent little person, Sarah? Maybe we should help you with that image."
Before I could say anything, Mira smiled widely and pulled scissors out of her bag. "Let’s see how you look without that boring hair."
When I felt scared, I tried to move, but a strong voice cut through the room before I could.
"That’s enough."
Zander stepped forward, and everyone's attention was drawn to him right away. Both Justin and Mira stopped moving, and their faces went from being proud to being scared.
He growled, "Get out," and his eyes got darker. "Now."
Mira dropped the scissors with shaky hands, and Justin apologized in a shaky voice. Then he and Mira ran out of the closet, leaving me with Zander by myself.
"Thank you," I said in a weak voice. After the fight, my heart was still beating fast.
Zander nodded, and his face showed a little less anger. "You okay?"
I nodded, but I wasn't sure if I was sure. "I didn’t expect them to take it that far."
"You should be more careful," Zander told her in a strong but soft voice. "Not everyone will back off as easily."
"I’ll keep that in mind," I replied, grateful for his intervention.
By the time I got to my first class as a teaching assistant, the fight with Justin and Mira was no longer in my mind. I had to pay attention. This was my chance to show one of the world's most powerful companies how good I was.
But when I walked into the classroom and saw Xavier there, my heart almost stopped.
Not at all. He couldn't do it. Not Xavier.
Just in case he saw me, I quickly tried to hide in the back of the room. Unfortunately, luck was not on my side.
"Sarah Haver, come forward," Xavier said in a deep voice that made my spine tingle.
I paused for a moment, then slowly got up and walked to the front of the room. I felt tense all over. When I got close to him, he looked right into my eyes, and the air between us felt tense.
Xavier said in a low voice that only I could hear, "So, my new teaching assistant is also... a person I met last night." What he said made my face burn.
When I saw that everyone in the room was looking at us, I swallowed hard and my face turned bright red. Xavier’s words echoed in my mind, and all I could think was—how was I supposed to survive this semester with him as my professor?
