Melanie was sitting with Josiah and Amy as they all ate lunch together. Suddenly, Brad came and plopped down beside her, his tray of cafeteria food in hand.
Why was he eating lunch with them instead of his group of trouble-maker friends? Josiah sat with them because Amy refused to leave Melanie alone at lunch since Melanie refused to join Amy at Josiah's lunch-table. Maybe Brad didn’t know this but the reason Melanie didn’t eat lunch at Josiah’s table was just so she could avoid Brad.
“Look who joined us,” Josiah said teasingly.
“Shut up,” Brad retorted, poking a straw in his milk.
Melanie pushed her food away, realizing she wasn’t all that hungry anymore.
“I just remembered I need to go return some books in the library,” Melanie suddenly spoke up quietly.
