Chapter 69

Dad left the room afterward, he had scheduled a conference meeting with the board members which would be held at home. “I’ve been observing since you returned, you aren’t looking nice Audrey” mum suddenly said breaking the silence. “Not again!” I mumbled to myself with locked eyes. “You can speak to me” she continued with her eyes fixed on me. I really don’t want to talk about this, asking me about the whole situation would only make things worse, now I feel like bursting into tears. I sniffled trying not to cry, I don’t want mum finding out about this, it only makes the relationship we had with Charlotte's family go sour. “It’s nothing mum, I’m just worried about work” she huffed and ruffled my hair. “Come on my girl, lying to mum? I’ve already enquired about your store and I heard it’s doing fine. Don’t think that you’re smart, that's why we couldn’t find you. Your dad and I had already found your location, we just want you to come home yourself” she asserted, I was astounded that I had nothing to say or back myself up. “I just wanted to speak with my daughter who I haven’t seen for years, but it’s fine if you find it hard to speak to your mother, maybe you’re now an adult and you don’t need anybody in your life.” She got up from the bed, straightened her clothes, and headed to the door. I was still frozen with shock, sitting still on the bed while thinking of what she had just said. Abruptly, I recovered from my trance and saw mum stepping out of my room, I got up from the bed and ran towards her, “mum!” I embraced her from behind. She came to a halt with a sullen face that soon turned into a beaming smile. “I’m sorry mum, I didn’t mean to lie to you. I just don’t want you to be worried about me” I explained. She turned to face me and caressed my face. “That’s why I’m your mother, what do you think I’m your mother for? Sitting around and watching my daughter go numb because of her troubles. I will not let you do that my dear, you and Aubrey are the most precious to me” she muttered, I heaved a sigh of relief, took her hand, and walked back into my room. “Mum! Promise not to freak out or overreact?” I inquired sternly. I know my mother very much, she mostly would freak out after hearing what transpired between Charlotte and me. “I promise but that’s if it’s neutral” I hissed and explained everything that happened to mum, she was silent for a while gawking at me. I saw myself as stupid since mum had nothing to say about this, I huffed, mocking myself. “What did you just say, tell me you’re pulling my leg?” Mum asked with a stoic face breaking me out of thoughts. Gazing at my mother's face, I suddenly felt vulnerable and broke down immediately, I couldn’t continue to pretend. I’m nothing close to a strong woman, I’m hurt, I feel bad and I know that nobody loves me. Mum pulled me in for a hug and patted my back soothingly. “I know how you feel my love, but I’ve warned you from the start to stay away from Charlotte. Her parents never wanted you to be friends with their daughter, you should also be aware that not everyone that smiled at you is your friend.” I continued sobbing while she rubbed my hair. It was over thirty minutes, and that was when I found out that tears weren’t falling down my cheeks anymore. I had no strength to cry or speak, I just lay on my mother's thigh thinking of what to do with these vicious ladies. “Everything would be fine, if you want your dad can easily set up a blind date with a few men from suitable families” “No, I’m not interested in a blind date.” I cut mum short and got up from her thigh. “I won’t force you, dear, just take your time to heal. You can easily tell me whenever you’re interested” I huffed and rolled my eyes. “Mum, I might be hurt but I’m fine. I’m just sad that someone I took as a family would betray me to such a length, even thinking of burning down my store” I uttered sadly. “That’s what you get from the low-class people, I’d always tell you to be wary of that girl. Still, I won’t blame you, I’ll make sure she rots in jail and I’ll make Andrew lose his job, nobody will be willing to hire him ever again” she affirmed in a serious tone that sent chills down my spine. I tried pleading with mum but she ignored me and walked out of the room. “This is why I hate telling her things, she would promise one thing and do another” I grimaced and lay on the bed with my back. It wasn’t until two minutes before I fell into a slumber. I slept calmly on my old bed which brought back so many memories, I also had a dream when Aubrey and I were fighting for this very room. Atlas, dad made her leave it to me as I was the junior one. “Audrey! Wake up Audrey” I heard mum's voice from my dream, I still wanted to sleep so I ignored the voice. “Audrey dear, come on the food would get cold” she sat down next to me while tapping my shoulder. In my dream, the voice was becoming louder that I had to sit up from the bed rubbing my eyes. Soon, I adjusted to the sunlight and slightly raised my head, “hi mum” I greeted with a smile. “I was worried that you would still be sulking, so I made more of your favorite meal, freshen up and come downstairs for breakfast.” She asserted and stepped out of the room.
