Chapter 66

“What did you just say? We’re making huge sales in a day?” I stuttered still in shock. “Yes, I was stunned that I had to check it multiple times” Addison nodded her head tremendously with a beaming face. I flashed a grin and sat down, feeling delighted. “We’re approaching our goal,” she added with excitement. “Yes, I’m glad that you chose a good plan, but I think it’s too early to celebrate. We should focus our minds on achieving the goal that could help the store. Although a hundred million sales it’s huge that was not the target Mr. Baldwin has set” the smile on her face fell. That was heartless, I know. But I have to call her to order, if not she would not manage the page properly and we won’t reach the target if that happens. “I understand Miss Audrey, I’ll do my best. But..” she pursed her lips. “Go on” I motioned her to continue with my hand. “We’ve used up all the photos from the photoshoot and we need new ones” she asserted. I breathed heavily and nodded without thinking. I said, “what are you waiting for? Get the models and get ready for the photo shoot” I ordered. “Yes ma’am, I’ll get a call down to DX to send in the models tomorrow” she responded, “get it all done, we have to prove to Mr. Baldwin that even as a new fashion store we’re capable of making many sales” she nodded in agreement and left my office. “Beep” my cell phone rang just as Addison walked out of my office. “Hello, is this Miss Wellington?” A husky voice asked as the call connected. “Yes, Audrey Wellington” “Miss Wellington, this is detective Jules, the thugs are up. You can come and identify the culprit” he muttered, I rose from the seat and tried to speak but nothing came out. “Hello! Miss Wellington, are you there?” The detective inquired. I flinched and came back to myself. “Yes! I’ll be there” I ended the call, packed my things, and stepped out of my office. “Take care of the store, I’ll be back in a moment” I uttered and strode out of the store. Suddenly, I noticed that the receptionist Mara wasn’t at her desk, I was worried and at the same time annoyed. I walked back into the store and stopped in front of Letitia, “ma’am” she muttered astounded, I just appeared in front of her without notice which frightened her. “Where is Mara? She isn’t at her desk” “She didn’t come in today,” she answered, standing on her feet. Addison approached us, “I just received Mara’s resignation letter,” Addison said as she handed me the letter. I took the letter and went through it. “This is absurd, did anything happen to her?” Addison shrugged, she also had no idea of what had happened. I heaved a sigh and stepped out of the store once more. I waved down a cab across the road, which drove off at high speed. Arriving at the station, I ambled into the building and searched for detective Jules. “I’m Audrey Wellington '' I mumbled, the detective gazed at me and motioned me to the questioning room. There I met Charlotte who was creating a scene, making things hard for the inspector guarding the room. I halted as my eyes landed on Mara, “you! Why are you here?” She looked away in fright and refused to speak. “Do you know them?” The detective inquired. “Yes, that’s Charlotte my ex-friend and this is Mara my worker that just resigned this morning” I responded, shooting them a glare. “Well, the thugs have regained consciousness and had mentioned the name of the mastermind, which is miss Charlotte” I scoffed as I already had the hunch that she was behind this, the nerve of her attempting to burn down my store after sneaking her way into Andrew's life. I walked up to her and landed a slap on her face, she staggered placing her hand on her cheeks, “you! How..” “Pah!” I landed another slap on her left chin. She groaned and cursed slightly. The detective rushed toward me and stood in front of Charlotte. “Miss Wellington, I know you’re hurt but there are rules that guard the station. You have to abide by it” I hissed and stepped back. “Nice, your worker here collided with the thugs to burn down your store. I’d have to ask if you aren’t treating her well?” I was frozen for some time. I huffed and massage my temple as I have no words to say. “I’m seeing them in court, detective! I want justice” he smiled and nodded, “you don’t have to worry about that, they will all be taken care of” he assured me while walking out of the query room. I followed behind him to sign a few papers, and with that, we were able to sue them to court. “Thank you, detective,” I exchanged a handshake with him. “My pleasure, don’t think about what happened, just focus on getting your lawyer to meet me.” I nodded and glared at the door where Charlotte and the rest were kept. And dashed out of the station with a raging mind. I felt the urge to cry but I held myself, “how do I get myself involved with people that want to harm me? I took pity on Mara and gave her a job without an interview. Despite all the qualified receptionists that came for the interview. What of Charlotte! She only came to make my life miserable” I mumbled helplessly as I walked on the pathway with no destination. I began to think that I have an Ill fate which was why I kept stumbling into betrayers.
