24 "What did you see?" I whispered to him as another officer led us down the left wing of the building. The exterior brick walls had hidden a world of cramped offices and the rustle of paperwork, and at the end of the hall was a thick metal door that led into the cell block. He smiled and pressed a finger to his lips. I frowned, but followed him as we passed through the thick door and turned right into the dreary cell block area. A wide hall ran for fifty yards, and on either side were small cells. Each of them held two hard beds and a sink and toilet, and as we passed by men of all stripes crowded about the cells.
