Chapter 4

Mate?

 Noelle 

 I woke up in the middle of the night with a sudden urge to go for a run. All my nerves were at the edge and the only thing that prevented me from shifting was the fact that I was asleep. I sat up in the bed and groaned in frustration. The jet lag still hurt my head but I started to shift without having a chance to stop. I climbed out of my room to the rood top and finished shifting. The warm summer wind caressed my skin through my fur, and I looked around. The city was absolutely gorgeous, the lights of the few houses where people were still awake shined like tiny stars. The moon was full and fabulous. I've never seen it this big back in New York. I looked around and spotted a pretty big forest far away. "That will be perfect." I thought and ran there on the roofs. I didn't know why but I had a feeling that I needed to be there. The pull of the place felt elemental and it sent waves of energy across my body. When I finally arrived there I felt like I ended up in a magical forest. There were millions of fireflies lighting up my way as I got deeper into the forest. I started to chase one by fun and let my fox self be what she was created for. I drank from a little lake, chased rabbits, and listened to the sound of the night. I don't know how long I've been playing around when a strange scent hit my nose. My ears leaned back and the fur on my back stood up. I looked around and saw a pair of reddish eyes still far away from me, but they were getting closer incredibly fast. First I thought it might be Nico, but I didn't smell his scent. I started to run like a chased prey what I seemed to become. The wolf which was running after me was huge and dreadful. It had a few wounds of old and deep scars and he smelled nothing lovely. I felt in danger, so I did what my instincts told me. I ran and hide. I tried to concentrate on my powers and change my scent but I could only make it less strong. The wolf gave up my chase. "Okay, it is definitely time to go back." I thought and ran again but another pair of eyes stared at me I barked with anger. "Why can't they just leave me alone?" Although this time the scent wasn't a disgusting one, I didn't trust that animal. So I ran again getting tired but I just started to live and I didn't want to die now. When I haven't heard his footsteps anymore I arrived at a glade and laid down to catch my breath. I was bathing in the moonlight and inhaled the fresh air. Soon the scent changed into something that enchanted me. It was like the freshest air I've ever smelled, the type which must be on top of the highest mountains. The scent meant freedom. A cracking sound made me lift my head and I found myself in front of a large and beautiful wolf. His fur was grey and white, his eyes were shining in the moonlight and the scent came from him. He smelled like freedom. The way that this wolf stared into my eyes sent a shiver down my spine and woke up feelings in me I never knew before. He approached and driven by my instincts I started to get further. I was tired of running and he seemed so tempting but I won't end up dead because of my curiosity. He shifted back into a human and Oh MY Dear Goddess... He was tall, I mean f*****g tall and muscular but not the way that it is too much, just in the right amount. I couldn't take my eyes away from his neck for a second, I wanted to deepen my teeth in them. "WHAT THE HELL AM I THINKING ABOUT?!" Finally, my mind woke up from amazement and I ram away hearing how he chased me. It was difficult because my legs took me far but my heart tried to stop me, I was scared of my own feelings and decided to follow what my legs did. He chased me but soon I lost him and I rand back to my hotel. Sneaked back to my room and jumped under the shower to cool myself down. I needed to talk about this with Zack. After the cold water finally calmed my nerves a bit, I dialed my brother's number and after only one ring he picked it up.     - Noelle if you want to boast about our fantastic vacation this isn't the best time to do it. - he said in a low voice, but I couldn't wait. - Zack, this is really important, I think I found my mate. 

- You did WHAT?! - he screamed and I heard from the background, first my niece crying and second how Piper, the always sweet and cam Piper, shouted at my brother.

- Zachary Smith! - I heard her footsteps approaching and she handed something to my brother then hissed between her teeth in a threatening voice. 

- If she won't be asleep in five minutes you will regret to ever pick up that phone! - she stormed out shutting the door closed behind her. After that, I only heard strange noises.

- Zack? Zack! Are you there?! - I asked and wanted to bite my nails in frustration, but I exaggerated because a few minutes later he said in a low calming voice.

- I'm still here, I just needed both of my hands. I put you on speaker. 

- Oh, fine. - I said and lowered my voice a bit too.

- So you found your mate! That is so cool Sis! How did it happen? 

- Well... I woke up in the middle of the night with a sudden urge to shift and I ran to a nearby forest. After a few hours of wandering and minding my own business, several werewolves started to chase me but I managed to escape. While I was catching my breath a little I felt an amazing smell. It smelled like the cleanest air in the high mountains, it smelled freedom, Zack... I looked up and there was him a huge werewolf, I couldn't take my eyes off of him and then he shifted into a human. And just wow... If you know what I mean. - Zack faked a puking sound and said.

- I'm visual you know? But yes even if it's gross I know what you are talking about. So a wolf... I'm not really a fan of them but there must be a reason for this pairing. What is his name? I hope not Davon or Alexander or stuff like that. - I swallowed hard but before I could've answered I heard the door open.

- She is still awake Zack... Why? - I felt the need to save my brother.

- It is my fault, Piper. 

- Do you have any idea what time is it? - she started to scold me but this time Zack came to my rescue. 

- Noelle just told me that she found her mate.- that moment Piper squeaked and caused Eleanora to giggle. 

- I'm so happy for you! This is just fantastic! What is him? Is he a fox too? Or a human? How does he look like?! What is his name!? Tell. Me. Everything! 

- Well... He is a werewolf. - Piper hummed.

- It is strange. Why would the Moon Goddess pair her with her natural enemy?- she asked more from herself than from Zack.

- She must have a reason. What is his name?

- I don't know.

- How?! - they both said in unison and I wondered if Eleanora will ever fall asleep.

- I said I don't know. When we met I got scared. I mean... I didn't know what I was feeling. My heart pulled me to him but my body and my instincts said Run. So I ran away.

- Why did you do such a stupid thing? - Piper asked.

- Baby, for Noelle this is new. We grew up knowing about the bond.

- You are right. Also, she is a rare specimen. She probably feels differently about the bond and knowing that Noelle could be her own soulmate that complicates everything. - I coughed.

- I'm here I hope you know. But if you want to keep gossiping about me I can hang down.

- Sorry Sis. We just trying to find a sense in your doings. What do you want to do? - Zack asked and I sighed.

- I have no idea. Honestly, I was never loved by a man. They always wanted to possess me only. I don't want any attachments right now.

- I'm sorry but this is not how it works. When you find your mate your soul automatically connects and it will hurt to be far from him. Also, werewolves are very possessive they want their mates close all the time. - I groaned. I wanted to get to know that man but there were too many traps along the way.

- In this case, I have to become stronger and get far from him as soon as possible. I won't be anybody's property. - I heard only silence from the other side and Zack finally spoke.

- At least give him a try or an explanation. He might understand that you need some time. If you don't like him you can always reject him.

- Although that is foxing painful. But yeah, you can reject him and live as nothing happened. - Piper added.

- I'll think about it. Thanks, and sorry for waking my beautiful niece up.

- Don't worry, she fell asleep already. - Piper said and Zack chuckled softly.

- She likes Noelle’s voice.

- I'll do her a recording if you want to. - I joked but from the silence on the other side, I quickly realized that they were really considering the offer.

- Anyway, get some sleep while you can!

- We will and don't forget to update us! - Piper said and Zack added.

- If something goes wrong just run and if you need help we will be there in a second.

- I know. I love you.
