KENDRA POV
After dropping off Adira at her house, Kendra drove home. She nodded at the guards stationed at the gate before driving into the pack land.
She drove for a while before she arrived at the packhouse which is a big two-story building standing tall at the center of the packed ground with a few cottage buildings for those that desired to leave within the pack.
Also, there was a tall building, the pack hospital where the pack members can deal with illnesses affecting the wolf side or if they didn't desire to visit the human hospital.
Her dad also added another building, a large ballroom where they host most of their social gatherings.
Kendra parked in front of the house and walked in. She was just about to head for the stairs when her mum's voice stopped.
" Hey young lady, where are you coming from? " Erica asked her daughter coming out from the kitchen.
" School mum, " Kendra answered rolling her eyes at what she felt was a dumb question. She was surprised her mum was even home, she is usually working late at the law firm she works at. Apart from being the pack Luna, her mum was also a lawyer and handles the pack's legal affairs as well as representing any of the pack members in need of legal representation.
" I saw that young lady, and you can't be coming from school when all your friends are already home from school? " Erica demanded with her hands folded across her chest as she focused on her child with a piercing look.
Kendra was her only child so is normal that she is protective of her. She wanted to know everything there is to know about her child.
Shoot, Kendra groaned in her mind, knowing there was no getting out of this, and lying to her mum was out of the question cause she always knows when Kendra is lying.
Her uncanny ability to sniff out when Kendra is lying freaks Kendra out sometimes.
" I went to drop off a schoolmate, " Kendra answered in a flippant tone, not wanting her mother to think there was more to it when she was only being kind.
" A boy? " Erica asked with a bit of amusement that Kendra didn't return.
" Mum!!, " she groaned, with another roll of her eyes. " No, is a girl, she is new in town.
" A human? " Erica asked with a frown wondering when her daughter started being friends with humans, not that she has anything against them, but her daughter has never associated herself with one before. Probably because of her mate, her father, Roderick who has a strong dislike for humans because of the incident with his brother.
He had made sure that Kendra knew not to associate with them.
" Yeah mum, and no we are not friends, I was just being kind " Kendra quickly added before her mother could ask the question obvious in her eyes.
Erica nodded leaving it at that. " Lunch is ready if you are hungry, " Erica said to her daughter.
Thanks, ma, Kendra replied politely making her way upstairs to the last floor.
The packhouse had two floors. The ground floor had their kitchen, common room areas, the alpha office, and some servant's rooms. While the first floor was for the guards, and some guest rooms. Kendra and her parents had the last floor to themselves.
Kendra made it into her room and quickly banged it shut. She went to her closet to change into her training uniform. A long black turtle neck top and black spandex, which she topped off with matching black sneakers.
She gathered her long black hair in a rough ponytail before making her way out of the door. Her dad made training sessions every afternoon compulsory for her. He wanted her to always be in good fighting shape, ready to defend herself because she doesn't know when danger could strike.
Kendra understood where her dad was coming from. The wolves in White Creek are always leaving in fear of the hunters. Is been over a decade since they had the last hunter attack, then Kendra had been young but according to her mum it had been a brutal war, fortunately for their side they won the battle and were able to drive the hunters away from town.
Hunters were humans with exceptional strength and the ability to kill wolves. They are fast almost as fast as the weres, and their weapons are deadly against their wolf side. Silver and wolfbane.
If the weres are in wolf form and are attacked by the wolfsbane They will be at their weakest, unable to fight or protect themselves, only the strongest of them could withstand the effect of a wolfbane.
Wolfbane is a purple dusty mist that infiltrates into a wolf through its nostrils paralyzing the muscles and rendering the wolf weak and unable to move.
The wolf elder council has made sure to ban the growing of wolfbane in the area. They are very much old wolves picked from each of the packs to help keep the different packs in line. They are about eight of them, two from each pack.
Kendra made her way to the kitchen and took one green apple off the fruit basket before making her way to the side down that lead to the underground basement where they did their indoor training.
When she walked in her friends were already there along with some pack warriors who were getting their training done.
Alyssa was having hand-to-hand combat with Cody, while one of the warrior's referee for them.
" Hi guys, " Kendra greeted getting their attention.
They both broke apart and came to join her including Olivia who was watching from the side.
Olivia has never been the warrior type and hates anything that has to do with physical activity or violence but her parents made it mandatory that she had to train alongside us. Even though she is not as strong as the rest of us she could still hold her own in a fight.
" Where the hell have you been? " Cody asked slightly out of breath from the intense workout with Alyssa. When they had gotten home and the girls had come over from their houses they had gone into the packhouse to look for Kendra only to find out she wasn't home. They were confused by that since their friend was the first to leave home.
" Let me guess, you were held up by Adira, " Alyssa cut in before Kendra could say anything.
The way she said made Kendra turn to flash her a look. " What are you trying to say? " She asked with a narrowed look.
" Nothing, just that it is a little weird how you are taking with this human..... "
" What human? " A deep voice bellowed behind them, cutting into their discussion and startling Kendra and her friends.
They jumped a little and turned around to see her father, the alpha standing behind them, his intimidating presence making Kendra and her friends' quake in their boots.
He had his intense icy blue eyes, which are so identical to Kendra that you will have no doubt who she got it from, focused on Kendra while he waited for her reply.
Everyone tilted their heads to the floor in greeting including Kendra. Kendra swallowed nervously, she knew how much her father disliked the humans, and only tolerates them when it came to their business.
" No one dad, " she answered strengthening up, making sure to keep her nervousness off her voice, while she held his gaze with her own. She and her mother were the only ones who could get away with looking the alpha in the eyes without it being considered a challenge.
She knew how much her dad could smell fear and use it against the person and she didn't want to appear weak in front of her dad.
Roderick kept his gaze on his daughter while he signaled to a guard to pass him two training sticks. Roderick moved closer to his child and threw one of the long sticks at her.
Everyone cleared off the central space giving them room as the alpha and his daughter faced off each other.
They both took a fighting stance, circling each other while keeping an eye out for any sudden movement from the other.
Roderick was the first to act. He took a hard swing at his daughter aiming for her head.
" What have I said about humans, " he growled as his stick struck hard against Kendra's which she had raised at the appropriate time to block his swing.
" That they are weak, dubious creatures, and should not be trusted, Kendra repeated the words her father has always drummed into her ears while hitting off his stick. She didn't know why her dad dislikes humans so much and when she tried to find out her mum shut her down saying her dad didn't like to talk about it.
She whirled on her heel and tried to catch him off guard with a strike to his side. Roderick stepped quickly to the side bringing his stick to deflect the deadly swing.
" Now tell me about this human Alyssa seems to think you are taking with, " Roderick demanded sweeping his stick low on the ground trying to clear Kendra's feet off the ground.
Kendra leaped high up the air escaping the stick while she cursed Alyssa in her mind. Damn her big mouth, Kendra thought doing two backflips to escape her father's ferocious attack.
Her dad has never taken it easy during their training session, attacking her as if she was an enemy and not her daughter. He believes that if she was going to one day take over the pack after him that she should be strong enough to lead, defend and protect her people against enemies from outside and from within because there might be people who will want to challenge her rule.
" She is just a girl I saved from being bullied by the Red Moon pack, " Kendra breathed out while going on the offense with her stick.
If there were people her dad dislike more than the humans, it was the Red Moon pack, he sees them as a barbaric and uncultured set of people.
The reason being that in Red Moon pack females and omega's are treated like second-class citizens in the pack. Females are not allowed to be warriors they are always to obey whatever the men say and never say no to a man no matter the request. The omegas as seen as weaklings and are treated like slaves and flogged if they ever made any mistake.
Her dad only tolerates them in any gathering because they are still part of the community despite their regressive way of life.
Kendra was right, at the mention of the Red Moon pack the suspicious look in her father's eyes cleared off.
His momentary lack of attention gave Kendra the opening she needed to strike, she raised her stick high up above her head and brought it down in the direction of her dad's hips.
Due to his distraction, Roderick didn't see the attack at the time, and by the time he saw it, it was already too late and he couldn't escape on time so the stick caught him hard on heels but he didn't allow that to slow him down as he turned mid-air to swing back at his daughter.
Kendra tried to escape, sidestepping, and bending backward at the waist as one of her father's swings flew over her head, but his attack became more ferocious and faster than Kendra couldn't keep up soon she found her both feet off the ground as she landed flat on her back with her dad stick pointed to her neck.
Kendra allowed her stick to fall listlessly off her hand while her breath fell in fast pants.
She smiled inside when she saw the proud look on her father's face. She has lasted far longer than she usually does in a fight with him, and she got in a hit something she has never been able to do in all their fight. She felt proud for having impressed her dad, who is so hard to impress.
The proud look only lasted but for a second before it disappeared and her dad assumed his usual blank expression.
" You have improved so much better these past few weeks, " Roderick complimented his daughter in a cold tone before letting the stick drop down to the floor beside her, and then he turned and walked out with his guards behind him.
Kendra released a resigned sigh at her father's cold reception of her hard work.
Ever since she started training as a warrior at the age of ten, her dad stopped treating her with warmth, she hardly ever see him smile at her like he did when she was young, and it pains Kendra to be on the receiving end of that cold indifference like she was just one of his pack members instead of his daughter.
" Hey, need a hand? " Cody asked appearing beside his best friend who was still lying on the floor.
Not responding, Kendra stretched out her hand to take his hand.
" I am so sorry Ken, I didn't mean to put you in trouble, " Alyssa apologized as they joined Kendra.
" No worries, " Kendra accepted her apology with a smile.
" So are you guys hungry? " She asked as they headed for the door.
" Famished, " Cody answered as his stomach growled.
Kendra and her friends laughed at the flushed look that appeared on his face as they made it out of the door.
