Liam was holding out his arm when I took it, giving him a grateful smile, he did look happier, making me feel the sting of my conscience, knowing that maybe I was using him, but he was the one that wanted to kiss me, not the other way around. I had told him I maybe didn’t feel the same way he did; that was enough, right?
Mom was looking up, seeing us walk down together when Mandy was already seated, looking up from her phone and scowling the second, she could see me holding onto Liam’s arm before being placed by the table and giving him and thankful smile before taking a seat next to my jealous sister who sad face made me feel better, take that you snake!
“Nice to finally see you downstairs, Jennifer….” Mom was giving me a smile that I didn’t return; she was not on my good side, not since she locked me inside her car and told me to grow up and let go of the same man that I had loved enough to marry, she could go to hell to and take Dylan and his girl with her…. I narrowed my eyes, and she sighed like she thought I was acting childish; I was, and I didn’t care!
“I’m just here to eat.” I said it snappier when Dad was walking inside. The second he looked at Liam and me, he looked uncomfortable, frowning like mom couldn’t see for miles that something was wrong when he sat down and stared at his hands that were on the table instead of any one of us that was sitting around him, this was going to end badly. I knew it the second mom was putting out plates and not even pretending that she wasn’t angry that Liam had swollen lips, same as me.
“Okay, so this is happening now? Jennifer…” Mom was sighing when I didn’t answer, just looking down at my plate and pretending that she didn’t exist. That was an excellent plan.
“What is happening?” Mandy was finally off her phone, and to my surprise, she hadn’t been spending every second trying to make Liam look at her when he was still smiling like he was happy, we kissed, and that was it; he was the one that told me this wasn’t serious, and I was hoping so bad that he meant that and didn’t lie.
“Nothing, just eat your damn food…” Mom was still giving me a glare when I didn’t care, and neither did Liam when he started to eat. I was shuffling my fork around, trying to find something good, when Dad was pushing my arm the slightest, seeing me not picking anything up to my sigh. Fine. I was taking a bite of broccoli and chewing slowly; it didn’t taste good. Nothing did.
“Hey, Liam, you want to tag along tonight?” I looked up, surprised, seeing Mandy turn her phone when Liam shrugged like he was down for whatever she was discussing. To my suspicious eyes, what were they going to do anyway??
“Sure, not like I got plans; I can drive….” He smiled at my sister, who beamed back, making me drop the fork in my hand to mom’s frown and dads cursing when it was on the floor, and he had gotten broccoli over his shirt.
“Dammit, Jennifer!” Dad was cursing my name when I still stared at the stupid teenagers who looked like they had secret plans. Suddenly, I was just a pregnant girl who didn’t fit into their arrangements.
“I’m sorry…” I said it sadder when dads scowl disappeared like he could hear it too, he wasn’t stupid, and he had been along when I met Liam; he knew more than Mom, that was looking relieved. She was happy over this and wanted me to be alone forever! Nobody was good enough for her, not Dylan, Grant, or anyone else I would love!
“No… it’s okay, it’s just a stain… don’t you worry about it…” I wiped my eyes when he smiled at me, being grateful that he wasn’t yelling at me anymore; seeing Mom, who was still looking at Mandy, who got up, not even saying anything like she had enough of what was happening when I just had dropped a damn fork!
“Whatever, I’m going to shower, and then we can leave; oh, you better have something better than that to wear, big boy….” Mandy smirked when Liam didn’t care and leaned back like he wasn’t afraid of her or what she was saying. To my dismay, looking at him, still staring back into the eyes of my sister, having laughter in them. s**t.
“Don’t you worry about that…” I hated that my chest was burning; why did he even look at her like he was having some kind of connection with my sister when he was supposed to have that with me?
I was still staring at Liam, that looked down again when Mandy didn’t say anything leaving the room and walking away, not having eaten anything on her plate.
“This was so good, Mrs. Thompson… really the best, thanks!” Liam was up when he was taking his plate along with Mandy’s that he was eating from walking back to the sink, cleaning hers off with his fork, and giving me a grin before leaving my parents and me alone in the stiff kitchen.
“Eat, Jennifer.” Mom was staring down at the opening when she turned her head and gave me a scowl like it was my fault her cooking sucked; it tasted nothing like the one I was used to with Grant.
“Why didn’t you tell Mandy to eat??” I didn’t even know why I bothered when Mom scowled more, wanting Dad to help her when he looked sad like he could see how sorry I was seeing Liam walking after my sister. Clearly, the kiss was just a kiss…... a hard lump was starting to form in my throat, and there was no way I could eat anything.
“Mandy is not pregnant with a damn eating disorder; that is why!” Mom wasn’t having my complaining when I was just gawking back at her stern scowl. Did she just tell me that? Why did it hurt so bad when she threw it back in my face?
“Gracie, stop. She had enough already….” Dad sighed when he knew they would fight over me, Mandy, and everything else happening around me.
“Has she?? That’s great, Ed, what about me??” she was already raising her voice, getting up when Dad followed, wanting to make her understand when she didn’t want to listen, or it was the other way around. Every time.
“You don’t have to say it like that; she is sick and….” I didn’t listen when my parents left me alone at the dinner table; nobody had been eating except for Liam.
Well, that was it then.
I got up to walk slowly up the stairs, wanting to get back to my bed, hearing my parents fight inside their bedroom, walking faster past them. The shower was running in the bathroom, and I wasn’t going to stop before hearing the familiar sound of someone enjoying whatever was happening on the other side.
My body froze. Was that… Mandy?? I was holding my breath when I knew I was being a creep for getting closer, hearing the distinct sound of moaning, followed by laughter, making my heart bleed. That was Liam, laughing along with my sister inside the bathroom.
My hand was still on the handle when I was closing my eyes, hurt, feeling so damn stupid, here I was telling him that we couldn’t get serious, and he made me believe that he wanted to try, but, in the end, he was just screwing my sister. That’s why she hadn’t followed him, she had already won.
