Chapter 9 “I can’t seem to sleep,” Adam groaned holding his head while on the other side Dr Pitt replied, “Are you trying to sleep at ten tonight? Mr Cross?” Adam stared at his darkroom and got his feet down from the bed before he stared at his nightgown. “I hadn’t slept last night and the night before. I have to sleep to remain sane. You know what happened the last time.” The doctor on the other side remained a little silent before he asked, “But I told you to take your sleeping pills if there is something straining at work.” Adam didn’t reply to this one and that made the doctor say, “Is it about work, Mr Cross?” And, a lot past Adam's head. Of course, he was still not over Andrea. He couldn’t have enough time to resort to his old ways of finding a rebound and as if fate didn’t want him to catch a break he met Sarah. And, though he had hired doctor Pitt for the betterment of his mental health he never shares anything with him. “Mr Cross? If you don’t want to talk about it I won’t press you but you can write it in your journal and figure out what you are dealing with on your own this time too. And, if you can manage you should come to visit me. I can help run some tests. Staying awake for this long had been lethal for you in the past too. Please take two pills and try to sleep.” “I will visit you on Sunday,” Adam replied and got up from his bed to take a pill from the drawer. He only took one. He hated the fact he had to have the pills to keep him sane. The doctor was right. Even in the past, journaling the thoughts had helped him. He had been journaling the moment his parent got divorced when he was only eight. In fact, it was his birthday when he was told how his parents were getting a separation. Propping himself over the headboard he stared at the blank white crispy page but then penned down. "I am writing down to get my mind clear. I wanted to know what it is about. Things at work are going incredible. And, it is the first time I am having this breakdown after any breakup. Andrea was indeed one amazing woman. A model body, career-oriented and resilient soul but it is clearly for the better that it didn’t go further. She hated my working hours, my political and social views at any moment. I know because she never tried to hide it. Was it the reason for our break-up? Clearly not, I have seen many couples with completely different views making it work. I will always blame Andrea for not trying to make it work. I am disappointed at her lack of compassion in our relationship. To top it all, my sister said I should find myself a stupid woman who can believe a marriage can work with me…" His hand came to a halt while Sarah’s face flashed in his mind. He gulped hard looking at the paper and started again. “…No, I know it is not about Sarah. Also, she is not stupid anymore. If anything she had gotten a spine. Spine to tell me on my face that she had gotten a better man now…" But then he stared at the lines. Of course, it is about Sarah. He had been restless since he left Sarah’s house. The way Sarah taunted and threw venom at him had affected him. What he said about her husband was logical. She literally married a leech and dared to tell me how he is better than me? Really? Max? He groaned and tossed the book on the side of his bed before he look up and glared at the luxurious ceiling of his room. He was sure now it was about how Sarah tried to rub her marriage at his face but then he smiled thinking how he will get to show off his own life to her. No matter what she was bound to regret. And, how it is only tomorrow night that he will get to have his revenge and see Sarah’s defeating face had him thinking everything will be fine at that very moment. The sun dawned on Dawson’s residence but this weekend was a little different for Sarah. She found Max waking her up at seven in the morning and groaned looking at him. “What?” Sarah asked but smiled finding Max leaving small kisses on her jaw. “Wake up, beautiful? I am going to make you the best breakfast.” Sarah smiled looking at him and kissed him back when he leaned in for one. “Saturday is mine…what’s…” And, before she could complete she was recalled how they were scheduled to have dinner with Adam today. Looking at Max’s bright smile only made her guilty more. “I want you to look the best…” Max kissed her neck and Sarah blinked, “…I wonder if everyone can see how I have the most beautiful girl in the world.” “Girl? I am thirty…” Sarah replied only for Max to pull away and smile. “You will always be my girl.” He leaned down to kiss her again before he got out to set her favourite bacon and butter bread. “Are you trying to fat me?” Sarah came out and picked the toast. “I wonder too how you will look fat.” And, this made Sarah look at Max. “I wonder too how I will look pregnant.” Max looked at her and smiled, “I can’t wait too and…I am really sorry that we have to wait until…” And, before Max could complete Sarah intervened, “And, I told you that you don’t have to worry about your accounts. I am an accountant, Max. I can help you manage and can do more too. Trust me…” but then looking at Max glaring at her she stopped and took a sip on the coffee. “I want kids too but…” “I know Max…and, I guess I should be understanding. I…I should care about what you think but I will be happier if you can consider us as a unit already and be assured of the fact that if I can afford to have kids…it means we.” “Give me two and a half months. I will be debt-free with this job in my hand and don’t forget Sarah? That you are feeding me for these months…so…basically I can’t and am not clearly doing it without you anyway. But…let’s try for the kids the moment I am helping running this house too, ok?” Sarah nodded her head and smiled before holding her arms out for him, “I love everything about you, Max,” and he came to stand beside her and kissed her head. Sarah wanted to catch on with her novel because Max was pampering her for getting agreed to the dinner with Adam. Sarah liked how she was mentally ready for the dinner now and not to forget enjoyed her Saturday on the couch until Max interrupted her with a red and white dress. “Which one?” Max asked and she widened her eyes. “No…definitely not,….Max? it’s not that formal I am sure,” And, that made Max glared at her. “The white one for sure,” Of course, white was Sarah’s favourite colour and she got busy reading her novel until the moment she realized the time when she told Adam how she loved white since she get to know Adam likes white too. “f**k!” She groaned and ran to Max. “I don’t think it’s a great idea, Max.” She started and Max seemed exasperated, “You better get ready if you don’t want me to dress you right here,” And, Sarah smiled looking at his cute eyes. She nodded her head believing it doesn’t matter. In fact, it was nice that Adam had called and arranged this dinner with his girlfriend. If anything Sarah was sure she will be too busy with her husband to notice his girlfriend anyway. Max pulled the car in front of the most expensive rooftop restaurants downtown and when they find valet parking Sarah shook her head. She was ready for Adam to show off his status and girlfriend but knew it wasn’t going to affect her. She smiled looking at Max as they took the elevator to the restaurant. Sarah found it weird when the person at the entrance seemed to welcome them already without asking them if they had any reservations. “I hope you enjoy your dinner here,” The manager said and Max was quick to add, “I told you it’s the best idea.” Sarah looked at the high glass ceilings while live music was being played by a band. "Did he really book the whole restaurant?" Sarah found herself asking, "I think he can," And, realized how she said it loud. The outside terrace was spacious and it wasn’t hard to notice Adam talking to a tall woman in a red dress. She could tell it was Adam even though he had his back on. The aura he emitted was casting a shadow at the whole place. “Good evening, Mr Cross,” Max said and Sarah sucked on her breath the moment Adam turned with a smile. In his crispy blue pinstripes suit with a matching tie. She gulped on her saliva and found herself noticing his blonde hair combed perfectly to the back. If she wasn’t wrong it was the same dress she used to show him and tell him to wear when they will have the wedding. Sarah blinked hard when Max called for her, “Sarah,” She started walking to Adam again and tried to manage a smile only to took by surprise. “Mrs Dawson,” She hated how it sounded on Adam and clutched on Adam’s suit from the right when he enveloped her in an embrace. She had to tell herself that Adam probably don’t remember what dress she was trying to show him eleven years ago. Her mood was instantly sour wondering why he tried to make any physical contact with her and glared at him when he pulled away. "I am glad you accepted the invitation," Adam said and was skilled enough to look at Max not letting his eyes wander on Sarah more than necessary. Sarah forced a smile before trying to share a hug with the woman standing right at Adam only to hit her head into Adam when her heel gave her away. She hated why she was affected by his rushed breath over her ear. “I am sorry,” Sarah said refusing to look at him and got ahead to share a half hug with the woman. Saying she was beautiful was an understatement. From her long blonde hair to her thin waist and perky breasts, everything seems perfect. One can say she is definitely an angel of Victoria Street underneath. “I have heard a lot about you from Adam, Sarah?” The woman said not too loud and she looked at Max and Adam who were literally now three steps away from them and started walking away as Adam showed the way to Max. Sarah looked at the woman and gulped hard. “I hope the good things,” Her voice came a lot clipped. The women started following the men to the table and the realization hit Sarah hard. For how Adam and Sarah had dated in the past spilling on this same table was going to ruin her marriage for sure. Sarah tried to smile a little before she accepted the seat Max had taken out for her. She couldn’t help but wonder how stupid it was for her to keep this from Max. “Are you fine?” Max asked her. Sarah looked into Max’s eyes and nodded realizing how much she loved these eyes. The last thing she wanted was for these eyes to look at her in doubt. “I couldn’t wait to thank you in person, Max. It really means a lot to us,” Max’s attention was captured by Andrea while Sarah’s eyes travelled to Adam who was sitting right in front of her. The amusement in those emerald eyes got her stomach to flip. And, the mere thought that he must have realized how she hadn’t told Max about their past made her bit her mouth. Of course, this was the reason for this meeting. He wanted to ruin her marriage for sure. The next chapter will be sooner and you get the prologue part too. Also, what do you think will make Adam realize it is not about showing off to Sarah...but something else entirely,
