Chapter 10

Sarah glared at Adam as if trying to warn him. And, this could have gone for longer but Adam was quick to say, “I have heard how you met Max. I must say your husband is head over heels for you.” For a moment, Adam’s eyes lingered on her mouth and Sarah nodded her head. “I know…I am lucky to have met him but you two are overdoing it. We would have helped you out anyway. It was nothing but general decency. You act as if you are not shown a lot.” Sarah looked at Max while two men approached their table to serve a roasted lamb. And, Sarah smiled at the waiter to nod. “What are you doing, Sarah. He is my boss…and, Adam Cross.” Max only whispered lowly as he set a napkin on his lap and Sarah looked at him. “Fine but I can’t promise,” She whispered back. “It was Andrea’s idea. You see she couldn’t wait to meet you two the moment I told her how you two helped me out in rain and contacting my chauffer back.” Adam show his perfect teeth and looked at Andrea with adoration. “He is right, Sarah. I wanted to see you…two.” Sarah gulped and could notice that woman’s double meaning conversation. “Good for us…isn’t honey?” Max said and Sarah smiled back at him before sharing a glance with Andrea. “Would you like some Champaign, Max and Sarah?” Andrea asked after a moment and Sarah noticed how this girl compliments Adam. She was confident in her speech and was making sure there is no complete silence over the table. “Sure,” Max accepted a glass from Andrea and passed it to Sarah who had already started with her plate. “Thank you,” Sarah told Max and Max added, “Sarah loves red wine,” “I know,” Adam said making all of them look at him. “I told you I know people…come on,...I only have eyes for the love of my life.” Adam stared at Sarah before he offered Andrea a dreamy look. Andrea offered him his hand and he kissed the back of it. "You two make such a great couple...you two are literally couple goals." Max complimented and that only made Adam's smile wider. Sarah held Max hand when he came to hold it under the table and smiled looking at him. “Great, that’s my favourite song…” Max looked at Sarah when the band played nothing’s gonna change my love for you before he tilted his head to look at the band playing. “…I mean how any romantic dinner can be completed without this song,” Max added with his eyes on the band when Andrea spoke, “That’s my favourite song too…care for a dance with me.” Max looked at Adam and he shrugged his shoulders. “Either case you are destroyed.” “Then, I better have this dance.” Adam laughed nodding his head while Max accepted Andrea’s hand. Sarah sucked in her breath when she felt Max's hand leaving her.  Sarah offered a tight smile to Max that tells Max he was in trouble but he too tried to excuse with his eyes only. Max took Andrea away on the empty space while Sarah possessiveness was evident for how she didn’t let her eyes away from the moment they left to start with their dance. “This…this could have been us, Sarah…” Sarah’s neck turn to him in an instant but he was quick to add. “…but no…you know what…you are made for someone like…Max…and that drummer who is playing there at the corner. I mean anyone would have worked for you, right? But when I look at Andrea…" Adam seemed possessed with his tight jaw and gritted the words now. "...nothing can replace her. She is a model, a lawyer and whatnot. She was what I wanted. Someone who wanted to grow above all.” Adam’s vein was popping over the temple while his voice got worked up toward the end as he got to his drink. “What are you doing, Adam?” And, when he ignored her question she hissed without a beat. “What are you doing?” Sarah could feel the tint of madness and agitation behind his voice and now she really wanted to know what he was up to. Adam smirked before leaning into his seat. “What I am doing? I am showing you the facts. You started it telling me how Max is better than me.” Sarah’s eyes got narrowed for a moment before her mouth hung open. “For this? And,…and, who started it? You…you can’t come to someone and tell her how her husband is in customer support. You started it.” “No, you are not someone. You are my ex. Of course, I gotta see what you dated in the past and now sort to…this? Max? If you were so desperate to marry you could have come to me. I would have shown you better suitors…” “Adam!” Sarah hissed before throwing the napkin on her lap to his face and turned to look at Max who seemed busy talking about something with Andrea. “Angry much? So, you finally realized how it was the worst decision you made in your life.” And, this made Sarah smile in agitation before she leaned into her chair. “I refuse to talk to you. You are hopeless.” “I am hopeless…I have gotten everything you can only f*****g dream about. You…you don’t know what I can do. For one, you are sitting here without you wanting to be here...” Sarah refused to react and cut him off by getting up from her place before she walked to Max. Andrea smiled before letting go and Sarah looked at Max and smiled when Max got his hands on her waist. “I really want to go home.” There was something in her eyes that made Max look at Adam. “Come on, you can’t really act like a jealous wife now.” “You know I am not the jealous type. Are you going to label me too?” And, this made Max narrow his eyes. “Is there something wrong? Is someone bothering you?” Sarah swayed on the beat with him but Max felt lost when she replied, “No,…I really want to go home.” “Sarah? Come to the table right away with me. We are not going to come out as rude ones. He is the higher up boss. And, there is no way I am going to lose this job. This…is really not the time to act up.” Max came to a halt the moment he finished talking and gave her a stern look before motioning her to walk to the table. “Mr Cross…it was really an amazing night. But…we have gotten visitors at our place. I really hope you can understand.” “Believe me, we are more than fine.” Adam’s proud and unfazed face made it a little awkward but Max tried to neutralize. “We will never forget about your hospitality. It was really an amazing night. And, thank you Andrea. You are really a great dancer.” Andrea smiled and titled her head as if she was touched by his words and Max nodded to Adam again before he left. They were handed over their coats and Sarah started the moment the elevator got shut after them. “What was this now? You wanted to stay.” Max looked at her in disappointment and shook his head before getting his hand off her waist. “Yes,…but I also felt like s**t treating you the way I treated you. Of course, I didn’t want to force it on you. The…whole point was of us having fun…and, heck I didn’t get to have any picture of the night. Imagine, not anyone believing me I once dined with Adam Cross…” Sarah pouted and came to stand in front of him. “I am sorry…but is it possible for someone to fall for someone all over again.” Max narrowed his eyes and groaned, “What?” “Because you look so cute admitting how you felt bad talking to me like that…and, imagine you…Max…you told Adam how you wanted to end the night…and, the reason was?...you did it for me.” Max rolled his eyes and leaned on her. “He might be Adam Cross but you are my wife. Adam might be the boss but in that office…you are my boss for life. Plus, I really hope you can let the matter of that dance away.” Sarah shot her brows up shaking her head. “I will think about it.” “Oh come on,” Max pulled her in and slammed her against the elevator door as he deepened the kiss. Sarah pulled away to breathe only for Max to trail the kisses on her beautiful long neck. “Is there something that is bothering you? To be honest, I really felt something off between you and Adam. You don’t like him or what?” Sarah opened her eyes wondering from where it was coming. Was it even the right time to tell him? “Max…” And, Max pulled away and cleaned his mouth with the back of his hand and pointed, “Your lipstick,” Sarah looked at the mirror and wanted to get a tissue out of her handbag only to notice she didn’t have one. “Shoot…I…I forgot my handbag.” “Really?” Max groaned and seemed agitated. “No, no, no, no,…you get the car and I will make it quick, trust me,” “Fine,” Max got out while she tried her best to get her mouth clean with her hands. On the fifth floor, some people joined the elevator too and she was making the space and getting to the back when she noticed Andrea coming into the elevator with a man. “What took you so long?” The man asked, “I came the moment guests were out…the script was long…and, you know how important it was. I had to be careful,” “Come on, Monica…I was waiting for you,” And, the way Andrea left a peck on his mouth to make up made Sarah fist her hands. The couple got out three floors before the restaurant and she was boiling with anger at this point. The moment the elevator opened she inhaled sharply before barging in. She got her steps hurriedly to the place where they were dining and of course, he was sitting alone trying to finish the bottle. The front he was giving them a few moments ago was nowhere to be seen but what she found was a person she could only pity. “Where’s Andrea?” She asked only for Adam to look at her. Of course, he was quick to act his demeanour when he replied, “Excuse me?” “Really? What were you saying? That you have gotten everything? Who you are lying to Adam…and why!” She walked to the table and got her purse, “What the heck you are talking about?” Adam tried to cut her off but she didn’t stop and kept talking, “…you literally hired an actress to play your girlfriend?” And, finding him getting out of his chair to walk to her in a hurry got her two feet back. “You know now? Fine! What can you do about it? You can’t change the fact your husband…” “Don’t you dare say a word about Max! If you couldn’t find anyone to love you for who you are! It is no one’s fault but your’s! And, you were always the jealous type getting your eyes on the things others have. Wanted to have everything that others had. Be it money, status, good grades…or girls. You were always like this, Adam…a shallow and empty shell. Nothing else!” “Shut up!” Adam held her mouth and got her up a little and seemed to shiver in the fury while Sarah got her hand on his wrist. “You think you know me…you think..." “What do you think I had been doing all these years?” Sarah gritted cutting him off at his face and this time tried harder to get his hand off her face. “You must be very happy seeing Andrea isn’t my girlfriend, right?...” He left her with a jerk and said. “You have nothing to jealous over!...” Adam smirked and got his hand in his pant nodding his head, “You think no one loves me…but guess what…I don’t want anyone’s love.” She could tell it was his drink talking but she couldn't help but clap her hands looking up right into his eyes. “No one loves you? I loved you….I love you for all these years wondering how I could be this stupid to lose you. Blamed it all on me for so long, Adam…for so long and I will never forget you for ruining my all those years…I…I was always so in love with you that it hurt me to breathe without you, Adam yet I never tried to approach you thinking I will only make you hate me more and even the thought of you hating me more than you already did break me every single day. People think that I should hate you for how you treated me in front of all those people but I couldn’t and I hate myself even more for this. I loved you for…” And, before Sarah could say further she felt his hard grip on her waist before he effortlessly kissed her deep. Sarah’s eyes got widen in shock and it took her two moments before she pushed him away. “How dare you!” Sarah slapped him hard on his face and he too didn’t react for a moment but then find himself looking right into her eyes. He fists his hands and seemed beyond angry before he said, “Divorce him…divorce him and let’s make it all right. You…you are not going to him, Sarah.” But then he held her arms with a death grip and towered her before whispering. “We have to make it alright…this is what it was all about and I thought…I thought I want to get stupid revenge on you. I…I don’t think I can ever see you in his arms again, Sarah. Come to me. And, I swear you can do it.” “Let me go, you can’t do this,” She was horrified at his suggestion. How dare he was to suggest a thing like this. “You are not getting it. I don’t think I can ever sleep after I have seen him kissing you. You…you have to come back to me. I...I can't see you in his arms, Sarah. You love me...I know you always loved me then why make it complicated...come back.” And, this time Sarah tried hardest to let go of his hold and shouted. “Let me go, you can’t do this!” "You know I can make anything possible. You used to say it yourself...you don't need to worry. I will take care of everything. You were mine. I made you mine...remember?" And, Sarah sucked on her breath when he tried to point on their first time. And, wonders if she had ever been this disgusted of anyone. "I am no property of yours, Adam. Leave me, Adam...you have gone mad! Leave me!" This time she dug her nails on his hand. And, he huffed a little before he leaned closer and his eyes were red shot when he whispered, "I could have...if you said you didn't love me instead," "I love my husband, do you hear me? I love him and you are no one for me...no one." And, this made him tsk before he smiled, "I messed up...but don't worry...I will make everything, right...everything."
