Adam gulped down the second drink. There wasn’t a single moment when he wasn’t thinking about Sarah. Only yesterday, the woman he was going to propose to leave him without any note and today he was shown how Sarah was living the beautiful fantasy life she always dreamed of.
Sarah was the girl he grew up with. He was certain about those innocent eyes only having the love for him but there wasn’t a single day he was not annoyed by her kind nature. She was all smiles, loved to see her friends and not to forget the glitters. With her there had to be something on that would have glitters. She was full of energy along with the glow of having her short term dreams that she somehow would always make possible.
He remembered wanting to marry her but now everything was lost moment in the time. He remembered being so mad at her when she brought him that expensive watch. Only a stupid maniac would spend six months of their overtime on a gift. He still admits he was right about leaving her. But now, with all this wealth he couldn’t buy a woman who would be in love with him as much as Sarah did to do extra shifts for him.
Gulping his drink he stared at his phone and chuckled how he don’t even have her pictures. He deleted all of those moments. He remembered being confident enough to move on from Sarah. Of course, it was difficult for him too but he knew he could pay this price. But leaving her for ambitions was easy. And, now seeing her in another man’s arms? Only the thought was enough to make him restless.
He smirked wondering if Sarah was happy tonight. She gets to show off her husband and happily married life to her ex. One look on the clock and it was twelve in the night. His birthday was over. It was a day indeed. It started with Andrea leaving him and ended with Sarah coming. Only if Andrea didn’t leave he would have her to show Sarah what kind of girls he dates now. And, then he was recalled of the moment when Sarah said her husband was everything he could never be. He wonders what she was mentioning. Was he better in bed? No, no, no, no,…
“He is a loser. A loser Sarah. You…you have forgotten about me. It’s been so so long.” He slurred to no one and got his head on the table.
His childhood was filled with Sarah. His mom once told him how no matter what Sarah won’t leave him. If his mom was alive today…she could have seen how easy it was for Sarah to move on. But no matter what he couldn’t just give her the upper hand. He had to arrange something right away.
The next day he got into his company’s employee profile to look for Max Dawson. He was thirty-three and had three jobs mentioned for his past record. Adam did stare where his marital status was mentioned married. His face twitched looking at him and he leaned into his chair holding his head. He wasn’t even handsome. For the way, he talks? Yes, he might be from one of those who knows how to keep talking. The past night roamed in his mind and from what he recalled her husband was excited to meet him. And, it was such a shame if he doesn’t see Max today.
“Linda? I want you to get Mr Dawson in my office. From what I know he works in our customer support and had been quite a new hire here.” His phone buzzed the moment he cut the call.
“Mr Cross…” He knew Nelson was going to remind him of his board meeting but he was quick to cut him off.
“Dismiss the meeting for this week. Schedule it for…tomorrow?"
“Mr Cross…it’s weekend tomorrow.”
“Haven’t we had these meetings on weekend before?” Adam cut the call and called Linda again. “Get some cookies and coffee in my office when Mr Dawson arrives.”
Adam had already noticed that Max was someone who could talk. And, he wanted to know what kind of person Sarah married to. He wanted to see for what Sarah chose him.
“Mr Dawson?” Adam leaned into his chair and got his perfect smile on.
“Hello, Mr Cross,” Max replied before he looked around to see his office.
“Nah, call me Adam…come let’s have some tea…” Two of his assistants came in with tea and cookies. “…I thought to treat you to some good time too. I hope I didn’t interrupt your day.”
“You must be kidding. You own this place. That work is yours.” Max made his way slowly to the chair and Adam got up from his chair to walk around and sat on the chair in front of him. Linda made tea for Max and asked, “Sugar?”
“A half spoon will work, thank you,” Adam twisted his mouth seeing him not giving any care of Linda’s beautiful body. It seems he was no womanizer or he was trying to put his best behaviour.
“So, Max…tell me about yourself?” Adam started and Max smiled.
“There is nothing about me. And, you had already met my wife, Sarah…” Adam tried to stay nonchalant but his mouth was dry in an instant at the mention and getting him here looks like a bad idea now.
“…tell me about you. I mean everyone knows you are a self-made person but…one can only imagine the amount of time you had invested,"
“Not really, Max. It wasn’t really that difficult, to be honest. Just right work involved in the right direction and a little bit of charm is required of course,” Adam noticed how Max was static and a little uptight when he listens to him. He loved how he could intimidate him.
“I think…I think I can’t decipher what you are talking about,” Max managed and Adam smiled getting his cup on the saucer.
“Maybe I will tell you in the future.” Max nodded his head and sipped on his coffee.
“To tell you the truth, only you asking me to come here to have coffee with you…is going to be a highlight of my life,”
“Really? I thought you meeting your wife for the first time was…by the way, I must say you two make an adorable couple. How did you two meet?” Max seemed to be lost in his thoughts before he said,
“In a flight,”
How cringy,
“How romantic?”
“Yea,…you know she was travelling in the business class and exchanged seats for a pregnant woman. You can guess? Kind, empathetic, considerate and well off.”
“She seems to be doing a lot better than you,"
“Yea, not like you of course. She is an accountant. But once I get to know her I could tell she is from the group of the girls who were way out of my league when I was in high school. Her mother is a doctor and they really own a great house in New Orleans. I…I really had to work hard on her and smart.” Adam blinked twice before he asked, “I thought you loved her.”
“I am crazy about her. You know you gotta be grateful when you know you have got something you could never even imagine!” And, that made Adam wonder. It seems he was impressed by her wealth but then he loves her too. He sure was talkative but seeing right through him for sure wasn’t easy.
“But you said you had to work hard…and, smart?"
“You gotta work smart to get the things you really want to have…Sarah seems reserved, balances me and I knew I wanted someone like her.”
“Really? But how were you sure…that it’s her.” And, this made Max look at Adam.
“Why did you not marry? Are you trying to collect the notes on who to marry? Or who is the one?” And, dang! Adam could see the guy knew how to talk.
“No, I have a girlfriend. In fact, I talked to her about you.” Adam tried to get Max nerve up again. “Really? That’s great. I am sure she is the luckiest.” And, just as Adam suspected he was excited again.
“You are talking as if you haven’t read articles on my love life.” And, this did Max a little puzzled. How Adam didn’t have any solid relationship in the past was a known fact among people who knows him.
“Well,…we all have our stories. And, one day you will find your right one.”
“For people like us? We have to give it a sheer amount of thought. For us, divorce is often not an option.” Adam looked at him and wondered what Max will have to say about it.
“But for people like us, it is about getting half worries less. And,…I don’t know but I am sure you can turn it this way too.” Even the thought that he was married to Sarah and whenever he says how perfect getting married is because Sarah is his wife had starts getting Adam uncomfortable.
“You know I like to learn about people. And, I want to know Max. Why do you think your wife was way out of your league or…you knew she was the one?” And, that made Max silent for a few moments.
“I once had the worst break-up. We were together for seven years. And, I won’t lie. I am responsible for its doom. I thought she won’t really get me out of the house. I really thought I had time and she is only nagging because she is a girl and this is how it is. One day our fight got huge and she threw me out. From that moment on, I lived at my friend’s…and, now? I was doing the jobs and sharing the housework too. And, this is when I realized how tired Lorraine might have been? Doing everything all by herself. I did go back after three months but she had already moved on. And, you know what she told me? She said I can’t change. For two years, I tried to find someone like her. Someone as much successful as hers. Who can be everything that Lorraine was? I couldn’t. But Sarah? Sarah was way more than her. Strong, uptight yet flexible…one look at her and I knew if I could get this woman…I am going to keep her...and, I knew I was ready…” Adam got his hand fisted and listened to him talking about Sarah a little more before he said,
“I won’t agree with you. You make it all about finding a relationship. What about being ahead in life? Getting the taste of the things only few can have?” And, this made Max shook his head a little before he said,
“I don’t think you can relate to a guy like me. I had had enough of doing the chores and jobs for two straight years. And, now I have to worry only about the half. I had a dream about living in the New York that I am living now and I get to secure a woman I can depend on…”
“But can she depend on you?” Adam cut him off and Max looked at him for a moment before he answered.
“Of course…but…I don’t think it can ever be the case given how hard-working and amazing she is.”
“Well, Max…you are right. I can’t really relate to you…we do have… whole different lives.” Max nodded his head and whispered. “It seems so because you don’t have the house chores.” Adam laughed shaking his head and this made him recall how he really never had to do the house chores.
First, his mother was always there for him. And, Sarah really used to do everything and never complained once. He didn’t really move in with all of his girlfriends but after Sarah, he always hired the help to do around his apartment.
He let Max go once he finished his coffee and wonder if he really loved Sarah. There was nothing special about him. Guys like him could be found anywhere literally. Of course, for him, Sarah was like a fortune. Though Sarah was an accountant Adam knew her mother had collected a fortune over the years. And, he was sure Max knows about it too. For him, Sarah was really like a bumper prize.
But what about Sarah? Doesn’t she deserve happiness too?
Adam knew Sarah was like a jackpot for such bummers but wasn’t it him who left her to pursue things that were important for him. He wonders how it would have been if he was a little forgiving for Sarah’s stunt. And, with this, he had this urge to see Sarah. But wasn’t he going to come out as a desperate one when all Sarah wanted to do was show off her good for nothing husband?
It was seven in the evening when he got his cellphone to call an escort company. “Mr Cross,” The man on the other side was quick to greet him.
“I…” He stopped for a moment wondering if it was really important but then recalling that proud face of Sarah he knew he had to.
“I want a fine woman for a night at the weekend. Someone best at her work."
“Consider it done, Mr Cross…do you want a girl with arrogance or you will prefer a rather soft and kind nature.” He smiled shaking his head.
“I want her to be the best host with her etiquettes at the point.”
“Very well...” And, Adam cut the call.
He made the second call to Max and as he suspected Max didn’t only accept the invitation but seemed quite excited about it. He didn’t even ask Sarah before accepting the invitation and this time Adam knew he was going to show Sarah how he too was living a perfect life.
