Chapter 13 – Over the Edge

1100 Words
Andrew set Lucy down and asked her to watch the door for when the hitman inevitably burst through. He used her brief distraction to take out the climbing rope from his inventory and quickly tie it around a nearby air conditioning unit.   Just as he pulled on the rope to see if it would work, he heard a massive slam as the door to the roof was opened. He only glanced at the enraged hitman before he turned his attention back to Lucy. “Lucy, climb on my back! Quick!” he shouted.   Lucy saw that Andrew was holding on to a rope and was confused about where it came from. But, she didn't have time to contemplate it further as her attacker was closing in and fast. She summoned all her courage to hastily leap onto Andrew's back and tightly wrap her arms around his neck.   As soon as Andrew believed that Lucy was secure, he planted his feet on the edge of the roof and leaned back. The last thing he saw before he jumped off to start repelling down was the hitman, who was five feet away from them.    Lucy tightened her grip around Andrew's neck as she screamed in fright. Andrew also let out a yelp of pain as he felt his airway being restricted.    Afraid of heights, Lucy squeezed her eyes shut and tried her best not to look down. She knew that she was almost suffocating Andrew, but she couldn't help it.    With an iron-clad grip on the rope, Andrew ignored the burning sensation on his palms as he repelled both of them down the side of the hospital. He had to focus all of his energy on not making a mistake that could send both of them crashing to the ground, which meant that he could only go so fast.   The hitman realized that was going on as soon as he had gotten close enough, but he couldn't grab them by then. However, he wasn't ready to just let his targets get away. He reached into his gown and pulled out a shive that he had been hiding, and grabbed onto the rope where it was tired.   “You think this is over?” the man called before he started to cut the rope. He laughed wickedly at the image of Lucy and Andrew falling to their deaths like a ton of bricks. “You both can die together!”   Andrew's heart jolted when he heard the voice from above. When he felt the rope start to shake, he knew that the hitman was doing something to it, and he felt like time was running out. He looked down to see how much farther they had to go and gritted his teeth when he saw that there were about six feet left.   “Lucy, I need you to listen to me carefully. When we fall after the rope is cut, we need to pretend to die. This fall will hurt, but it won't kill us. I'm certain that from the hitman's perspective, the drop is a lot greater than it actually is.”   “What... what do I do?” Lucy murmured.   “No matter what hurts, you need to lie absolutely still. Don't make a sound.”   A second later, the rope went slack and sent Lucy and Andrew falling. They landed on the ground, hard, and collapsed into a heap. Lucy did precisely what she was told and gritted her teeth to stop from moaning in pain.   Neither of them broke any bones thanks to the grass that surrounded the property, but their bodies would undoubtedly be bruised. Andrew thought of himself as a lifeless doll tossed onto the floor and remained perfectly still.   The hitman scrutinized the two bodies that lay motionless in the grass below. He waited to see if there were any signs of movement that indicated they were still alive, and when he saw none, he grinned. “Job well done,” he told himself before he headed for the exit.   Not long after the killer left the roof, Leo appeared with a few security guards and a nurse. He had heard Lucy's scream and realized that she was on the roof. However, he couldn't see any sign of her and worried that she had leaped to her death.   He swiftly ran to the edge of the roof and looked down, and he felt his heart stop. He saw two bodies in a pile, and he thought the worst. “Miss Yates! Andrew!” Leo shouted down to them.   Andrew was the first to raise his head when he heard Dr. Turner's voice. He felt such extreme relief when he knew that the hitman was no longer there. “We're okay!” he yelled back.    When they fell, Lucy landed on top of Andrew and cushioned her fall. He gently moved from underneath her and helped her lay flat on her back. “Lucy?” he called, concerned. Her eyes were still closed.    Thankfully, Lucy's eyes fluttered open. She saw that Andrew's face was only an inch away from hers and could feel his warm breath on her face. Her cheeks reddened once more, and she scrambled to get away from him.    “Whoa, whoa! Don't move!” Andrew exclaimed. “Are you injured at all?”   Lucy stopped and took stock of her body. She was sore but otherwise okay. “I think I'm alright,” she said quietly.    “Good. We are safe now. The trick worked.”   “Really?” she asked as she sat up slowly.   “Dr. Turner is up there right now, watching us.”   Lucy was overwhelmed with both relief and appreciation, and she was temporarily caught up by it. She reached forward to hug Andrew's waist tightly. “Thank you,” she whispered. “Thank you.”   “Hey, don't mention it. It's okay,” Andrew said softly. Though what he had just experienced was terrifying and tested his abilities on many levels, he found himself greatly rewarded. Lucy was in his arms, and he could faintly smell her perfume. Through the thin hospital gown, Andrew could feel her soft body and full breasts.   As a normal man, Andrew was subconsciously turned on. Normally, he could hide his physiological response from her, but they were too close.    Unfortunately, Lucy also discovered this and backed away from him. She had never been so close to a man, and therefore never experienced something so awkward. If Andrew could completely see her, he would know that she blushed from head to toe.
