Elena POV
I sipped my coffee and walked into the hospital.The stares everyone was giving me.The best attending physician was now wearing light blue resident uniform.I felt like a f*****g amateur.
Those who were jealous of my success were now laughing at me.I was devastated.I didn't know how to deal with criticism.I've always been the best at everything.
I couldn't handle being second.
I walked into James's ward.He was eating his breakfast.
"Hi." He said to me kindly.
"Hello." I replied.I grabbed his charts and revised it.
"It's time for our session.Why are having breakfast?" I asked.
"I am sorry.I woke up a little late and I was very hungry." He replied sadly and moved away his food.How was he so sweet.
"No,no.Eat now.We need you to have strength." I replied.I sat on the couch as I kept on revising his charts.
"Your uniform." He whispered.
"Hmm?" I asked.
"You're wearing a different uniform today." He said.
"It's nothing." I replied.
After he was done eating,we finished our session.
I massaged his arms and all the frozen areas.He was suffering so much.I wish I could fix him immediately.He was a really good guy who didn't deserve this.
I was done with the session.I was wrapping up until his voice caught my attention.
"Dr.Alvarez Are you alright?" He asked.
"I am." I replied without making any eye contact.
"Are you sure?" He asked.
"Of course, why wouldn't I be?" I faked a smile.
"You don't look fine.You are cheerful every day but something is off today." He said.
"Did I do something?" He asked.
"No,James.No." I whispered.
"What's wrong? You are missing your usual glee.You are wearing a different uniform and you haven't even talked to me." He said.
"Well, it's nothing you should be worried about.Just focus on getting better." I replied.
"You can talk with me." He grabbed my wrist with his left hand.He took a deep breath and sighed.
"Ouch.I almost forgot." He said.
"You moved your hand!" I smiled widely.
"I did." He replied.
"Now it hurts." He added.
"Hey, it's going to be fine.This is such a huge improvement." I replied.
He smiled back.
"I am so happy.I just want to go back to my family as soon as possible." He smiled while my smile disappeared.
"Yes." I replied.
"That's...yeah, that's good." I hesitated.I needed to stop myself and all this.He was married.I wasn't supposed to feel jealous.
"Dr.Alvarez!" He called out of my thoughts.
"Yes." I looked at him.
"Can I get a charger? My phone just died." He said.
"I will have someone get you a charger." I replied.
"Thank you." He smiled.I turned around to walk away.
"Dr.-" He whispered.
"What's wrong?" I asked with concern.
"What happened to you?" He asked.
"Like I said,it isn't anything to worry about." I smiled.
"I want to know." He said.
"I got demoted." I bit my lips and turned around to hide my tears.
"Elena." He called out.
"It's fine.It's nothing." I said.
He walked out of the bed and towards me.He embraced me as I cried.
"Shush, it's alright." He comforted me.The feeling of being in his arms was indescribable.
It was ecstatic.
He made me sit on the couch and sat beside me.
"It's alright,Elena." He whispered.
"My career is all I have.People respect me and I can't lose that." I cried.
I have never cried in front of anyone but in front of him,it felt like I could be myself.He made me feel vulnerable.
He lifted my face and wiped my tears.
"You shouldn't cry.You should know that despite what colour uniform you wear,you are the best.You will always be the best." He smiled.
"Repeat after me,'I am the best.'' He whispered.
"I am the best." I whispered.
"I am sorry.I shouldn't bother you with these things." I wiped my tears.
"It's alright.Can I ask what happened?" He asked.
"Oh... it's nothing.Leave it." I replied and stood up to leave.
My instincts made me turn around and kiss his lips once again.
"Don't do that." He made a pleading face.
"I can't help it." I whispered.
"I am married." He whispered.
"I don't care." I replied.
"Dr.Alvarez." He whispered, holding me tightly in his arms, looking into my eyes,he had the audacity to say,"I love my wife."
I narrowed down my eyes in disappointment.
We both were distracted by the door opening.
"Elena Alvarez!" Chief Bradley yelled at me.
We immediately let go of each other.
"Didn't you hear my last warning? You like to play with fire?!" He yelled.
"Don't shout at me!" I yelled back.
"Oh yeah? What are you going to do?" He walked closer to me.
"Bradley, it's alright." James whispered.
"No,James! It's not.Your kindness will never get you anywhere!" He yelled.
"Bradley,I am a patient! You are supposed to give me what I demand." He said.
"She is none of your business." Bradley hissed.
"She is my doctor but she is also a human." James replied.Why was he fighting for me?
"James,you have a beautiful family.Since your father died,it became my responsibility to take care of you and I will not let someone like her ruin it." He said.
"You don't want Adele to know about it." He said.James stopped speaking.Was it really this easy to manipulate him?
"This is it,Elena." Bradley said.
"No,no!" I replied.
Why wasn't James saying anything? He just took a few steps back from us.
"You're not firing me, Bradley! Not this easily!" I replied.I shot a glance towards James before walking out of the ward.
James POV
"You were so harsh on her." I whispered.
"James,she is a whore.She will ruin your life." He whispered.
"No, she's not.She has been really kind the-"
"No! You are a kind person and you think of everyone as kind." He said.
"How do you think Adele will feel after knowing about this?" He asked.
"We have nothing between us." I whispered.
"I saw her in your arms a while ago." He replied.
"She is sad.You demoted her.You took away her life.How would you feel if your status was taken away from you? I can see through a person. I can see through the exact amount of pain she is.So if you see me as your son,give her back her position." I said.
"I am not doing it!" He gritted his teeth.
"Then you know what happens." I whispered.
"James,you are not taking such a big step for that whore." Bradley said.
"Call her a w***e one more time, Bradley." I whispered as I gulped to control my anger.I wasn't the type of person who'd get angry easily but the way he was talking about Elena was getting on my nerves.In fact,I don't know why I was fighting for her.
"You are her mentor.She does not deserve her soul crushed down by you." I added.
He breathed heavily before storming out of the room.

I was laying down on the bed.There was a storm outside.The loud thunders were keeping me awake.
My eyes were closed.I was trying to get some sleep.
I heard the low creak of the door.I didn't open my eyes yet.
The perfect sound of heels hitting the ground were so melodious to me because I knew who it was.
I could smell her heavenly fragrance as she came closer to me.She put her hand on my forehead and I heard her chuckle.
She ran her fingers through my hair.
"I wish I could tell you what an angel you are." She whispered.
"You are the kind of person this world doesn't deserve." She whispered as she planted a deep kiss on my forehead.
"I wish I'd met you earlier.I wish I was the person you'd marry but life..." she smiled painfully,"life is an asshole."
"I want to make you mine but I can't cause I know you love your wife and I am just a no one but it makes me so jealous that it makes life harder to live."
"Be mine, James." She whispered.She leaned her head on mine and closed her eyes.
I opened my eyes.
"You will hurt your neck if you sleep like that.'' I whispered, seeing that she was in an awkward position.
"You were awake?'' She asked.
''Maybe.'' I replied.
"Go to sleep.It's late." She whispered.
"Why didn't you go home yet?" I asked.
"Because it's storming outside and I will die if I go out of the building." She whispered.
"Stay with me then." I whispered.
She looked at me and blinked a few times.Then closed her eyes again.
"I am sorry.I caused a lot of problems for you." I said.
"No, you didn't.'' She whispered.
She moved to my right and laid down beside me.She rested her head on my arm and embraced me as she closed her eyes.
"Don't leave me."
The whisper sent shivers down my spine.
