I pushed open the door and stepped inside the cool dark room, maybe my early thoughts about hiding in a cave were wrong, I felt like I was stepping into the lair of the beast. Marcus stood from the leather seat across from the table. He was coming closer to me and I looked at the three people sitting on the couch. I clenched my hands into fist, they were cold and sweaty.
Inhuman eyes, the same as before, tracking my every move. I blinked hard before regaining my composure and walking closer to Marcus. I handed him the box, his fingertips grazing mine.
“I’m sorry Sir, I forgot this on my desk,” I said, knowing that I must have looked like a deer in headlights, eyes wide and a cold sweat covering my forehead making my hair stick to the back of my neck.
“Don’t worry about it, Amelia I’d like to introduce you to the elder's council.” He said placing his hand at the small of my back and ushering me closer to them. Much closer than I wanted to be. I wanted to turn and run away as fear gripped my body, making my muscles tense in anticipation of fleeing these, these creatures.
“This is Nash,” Marcus said and I studied the man in front of me, his yellow glowing eyes watching me like a serpent’s the pupils a small slit, his nostrils flared and he licked his lips in a gesture that had me moving closer than I should to my boss. Nash leaned forward causing his white button-up shirt to stretch across his broad chest, muscles flexing underneath it like he might jump and try to chase me. His eyes glimmered in the darkness as his lips twisted into a smirk that promised things I didn’t want to imagine.
I looked at Marcus’ calm face, didn’t he see what I did? How could he be so calm, he looked at his guests and then back at me?
“This is Izar,” Marcus motioned to the other side of the couch where another man sat his legs crossed away from the woman beside him, his incandescent eyes peering at me through thick dark lashes. Lashes that were too pretty to belong to a man, his skin pale like a marble statue. He looked hungry, with hollow gaunt cheeks. His long black hair shining in the dim light of the room, he was beautiful in an otherworldly way that looked out of place with the dark shimmering material of his well-tailored suit. He crossed his arms as he looked from Marcus to me and then from Louis leaning against Marcus’ desk before his gaze returned to mine.
I got the feeling that he was dismissing me and I was perfectly okay with that. Better than the other whose eyes I could still feel watching me.
“And lastly our Vega.” He said with a slight bow at the woman sitting in between the two men. Looking at her made the urge to run and hide even worse, I could feel my heart beating rapidly in my chest. Her honey-blonde hair curling gracefully around her bare shoulders, as she watched me with blazing orange eyes that reminded me of the flame of a campfire.
She smiled, her teeth long and sharp, behind full glossy red lips. Power rolled off of her in waves, that even I could feel making me want to cower and hide.
Pray to long forgotten gods, that I would be spared from whatever they, no. Not they whatever she was.
“Vega, please,” Louis said, but I couldn’t pull my eyes away from hers.
“Marcus, you need to get your pet under control.” She said with a smirk. Her accent was thick and one I had never heard before. I looked up at Marcus and then to Louis. Did they not see their guest’s eyes?
I must have finally lost my mind, that was the only thing I could think as I looked back at the horrifyingly beautiful woman. Terror running through me as I stepped back closer to the door. My heel catching on the rug making me stumble into Marcus’ chest. His arm wrapped around my waist as he helped me steady myself.
“Her fear is heady, and it’s tempting Nash.” She said motioning to the man beside her with a dark smile, his hands were on his knees and his muscles bunched tight, ready to pounce as he watched me hungrily.
Marcus’ hand on my back stopped me from going any further and I looked up at him again.
Her words registering, humans couldn’t smell fear. At least, none that I knew.
I wasn’t dealing with humans; I felt clammy and shaky as my head swam. Wanting out of here I turned towards the doorway and before I could take a step further Louis was in front of me.
“Little one, calm down.” He said in a soothing hushed tone of voice, I knew was meant to comfort me. It didn’t as I looked up into his worried violet gaze and then towards the door, I knew at that moment that I wasn’t going crazy.
He could see them too and looking over my shoulder at Marcus only confirmed my sneaking suspicion.
What was going on and what were those creatures?
