Chapter 6
By Jason’s second Christmas, he was now walking and talking and could enjoy opening his own presents. That Christmas he received clothing and also a Lincoln log set. Before he was two, he was putting these sets together, amazing his parents and forecasting his future plans as a civil engineer. That spring Colin again worked in the cotton mill while working a second job in the tobacco fields. He also had a small tobacco patch that he and Leah worked. Leah was now buying first-run material from the sewing store instead of using seconds from the mill. She had replaced the homemade curtains with new Sears & Roebuck curtains that matched the bedspreads on the beds. Things looked great for the Campbells, that is until the summer of ’53, when things would change dramatically.
