"There are a group of zombies outside the garage," We have been hiding in the same garage since last day and now that we had planned to leave, there were zombies covering the entire road. Caz sounded like he knew there was no way we could fight them off.
"Can we make a run to the other side of the road?" I suggested, reaching the small hole they were peeping from.
"Are you crazy? Do you think my little brother can follow up with our pace? Do you want him to be left behind as bait so that you can easily wave your way out of this mess?" Irene's bitter tone and sassy attitude pissed me off. She was straight up accusing me of something I haven't even done.
"When did I say that? Since nobody was pitching in any idea, I decided to---," Before I could even finish, Irene intervened.
"To set my brother as a trap for them? Or as a bait?" she interrupted again with much attitude this time.
"Vivi!" instead of asking Irene to not pick up an unnecessary fight with me, Kai yelled at me to shut me up.
"But she right, though!" Leo, who was Irene's little brother, shocked me by picking up my side. Everybody turned to him and watched his face including his sister.
"We can't hide here the entire day, soon we will run out of what? Lemme guess, we don't have anything to run out of. We will starve here to our deaths." Leo, being a kid and this brave, blew off my mind.
"You are just a kid, Leo. Let the adults handle it." I bet Irene didn't like the fact that he took my side because she kept glaring at her own brother, without caring much how it would make him feel.
"I saw the adults shutting her down very quick," oh! There he was, the little mischievous kid I have encountered the first time and had a brawl with him.
"So what are you suggesting big boy, that we run out of this garage while these zombies eat our flesh?" Caz was the first one to step forward, Irene coming between him and her brother made Caz slowly step back with a scoff.
“Let’s just all admit that we can’t stay here forever, we have to leave eventually once we are out of food and necessities.” Thankfully, Ricky wasn’t on Irene’s side just like others, “If we stayed in this garage for more than day, I am pretty sure the crowd of hungry zombies will only rise.” He added, making sense when others didn’t even want to consider my suggestion.
“So, what’s the plan now?” Hila stepped ahead with a bat in her hand. It was funny how those who I thought would be courageous enough were acting all scared, but the ones that would be called cowards were standing up to fight for their survival. Kai wasn’t a coward; he was just taking too much interest in Irene.
“We make it to the other side of the road,” I repeated what I said earlier when Irene interrupted me and accused me of being inconsiderate of her brother’s safety.
“I think that is the only thing we can do now,” suddenly, Kai too agreed with me, who had previously shut me up.
Soon we all grabbed the weapons that we could use in self-defense and prepared for a heart-chilling fight.
“On the count of three,” Caz stood with the door and yelled, “1, 2,” as we all waited, I noticed the shivering in his body, they were all unprepared for this fight, “3!” he announced and opened the door. The sudden invasion of the light along with the grunts and groans of the zombies intensifying shuddered us for a moment.
There was no time to rethink or zone out as the zombies had seen us. They all turned to us and began to walk towards the inside of the garage, we all knew that once they are inside in a jam-packed space, it will be extremely hard for us to win over them.
Caz swung his bat and the zombie in front of him grunted loudly when his skull cracked open by the force Caz had applied. Irene was given a chair’s handle but I don’t think she ever planned on using it because she was holding it behind her back and hiding behind Kai. Ricky kicked the zombie approaching him and as he got some time, he managed to hit the other approaching zombie with the bat.
I saw a zombie reaching for Hila while she was busy trying to kill another zombie by attacking his neck. I lunged at the zombie and hit him on his head, no matter how hard we fought them, they would still get up and try to get a bite from us.
The problem wasn’t us; it was the weapons.
We managed to run out of the garage and once we were on the road, we acknowledged that we needed weapons.
“Attack the head!” I shouted again, accidentally grabbing the attention of a group of zombies. Kai was holding Irene’s hand who was then holding her brother close to her, making a way towards the other side of the road. There was a van parked on the other side and I believed it would be a good escape for us.
Kai kicked the zombie out of his way while slammed the other one attacking Irene from the side. Caz and Ricky were sticking together; Ricky would hurriedly grab the zombie from his shoulders from behind to restrict his movement while Caz will easily aim at his head.
Hila and I were slowly making our way towards the van but she had started to tremble at every step.
I didn’t want to leave her behind, because what she said before hit me.
It seemed like we were nobody’s priority so we have to stick together. I had merely looked away for a moment when a zombie came out of nowhere and bent over me, trying to take a bite out of me. My heart skipped a beat to see one from this close, though it wasn’t the first time, no way I could get used to something like this.
I stretched back from him, placing my hands on him to shove him back and away from me.
“Arghhhh!” a loud scream penetrated through my ears from behind me, it was Hila on the road with a zombie over her.
“Get away from her!” I shouted, adjusting myself over them and swinging the bat across his head. I didn’t know how much power I have applied until his neck broke and his head rolled over to the other side of the road.
“Are you okay?” I asked in concern, offering her my hand to help her get up. She looked traumatized and scared, her eyes were bugged out in shock whilst she stayed frozen to her spot.
“Hil---,” before I could voice out for her again, I felt a zombie attacking me from behind. As I let out a scream and turned my face to him, I saw him opening his mouth wide open to my shoulder.
