CHAPTER SEVEN

Clair I watched as Stella drove farther into the night. I thought of how vulnerable Karly and I were in high school and how badly we were treated because of it. “You forgot one thing, Stella, we are not the little high school girls anymore, I will not let you harm Karly and me anymore,” I whisper to myself. “Let’s go, Karly,” I said as the Uber driver packed in front of us. He got down and helped us pack our stuff into the car. I glared at the landlord before entering the car with Karly. He has been quiet the whole time since Stella drove in. The Uber driver ignited the car engine and started driving. “Where are you going to ma?” He asked politely. “Honestly I don’t know,” I replied, overwhelmed by mixed emotions. “Please take us to the nearest hotel,” Karly answered the driver. She placed her hand on mine and moved closer to me. I closed my eyes and rested my head on her shoulder. I raised my head abruptly and looked at Karly with a worried expression. “Karly, we cannot afford a hotel right now, what are we going to do there? Beg to get in?” I asked worriedly. “No Clair, we are not begging *laugh* I have been saving money for emergencies from the pay I got from working as a waitress, don’t worry we can afford a few days in a hotel. “Thank you, Karly, you are the most amazing bestie ever! What will I do without you?” “Come here,” she said as she gestured for me to lay my head on her shoulder. I was relieved we had a place to stay for a few days, I was determined to get a job to support us and solve our financial instability. I hope the company interviewing me next week is Stella free.” I thought and signed. “It’s okay Clair, I know you are worried about b*tchy Stella. You don’t need to be worried Clair, we are not in high school anymore. If she tries anything against us, we will kick her a** hard.” Karly said, comfortingly using her hand to rub my hair slowly and softly. “I love you, Karly.” “I love you too Clair,” she replied. The rest of the drive was silent, the only sound we were hearing was the sound coming from the car engine and the car wheel. We drove for about twelve minutes before we got to the hotel. We got out of the car, took our stuff, and entered the hotel. We paid for a room and we were directed to our room, immediately I entered the room, I jumped into the bed embracing it. “Karly! The bed is so soft and comfortable compared to ours.” I said in a low excited voice. “Really?” She asked as she dropped the luggage she was holding at a corner. She walked up to me and lay beside me, “It's so comfortable Clair.” She said as she closed her eyes to feel the comfort of the bed, I closed mine too and we fell asleep in that position till the next morning. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… “Good morning sleepyhead, wake up!” I heard Karly's voice saying. “Give me five more minutes,” I said, drawing the blanket to cover my head. “Get down from that bed!” “No! I don’t want to!” “If you don’t get down now, I will get you down myself.” She said, approaching me and removing the blanket from my body. “Okay, okay, okay, I surrender, don’t pull me down,” I said, I got up and sat at the edge of the bed. “The hotel brought us food, go freshen up, let's eat together. I'm leaving for work in 20 minutes. “Okay, Mom,” I replied, rolling my eyes. “Why are you still sitting down? Move your a** into the bathroom now!” “Pain in the a**! I take back the word I said yesterday!” I murmured “What did you say?” She asked “Nothing!” I said as I rushed to the bathroom laughing. I came out ten minutes later, I quickly threw a dress on, walked toward Karly, and sat on the sofa next to her. “You’ve used more than half of my time, let’s eat, I’m leaving soon.” She said, digging into the food. I joined her and we soon finished the food. “I hope there’s no traffic on the way, I need to get to work as soon as possible.” She said as she took her bag walking toward the door. “It’s going to be so boring without you,” I said. She paused and turned her head facing me. “I will be back before you know it, bye!” she waved and opened the door. “Bye,” I said, waving back. She smiled and left. I guess it's me and my phone then. I took my phone to watch a movie but a message from an unknown number caught my eye. I opened the message and was shocked to see the content. “Hi, firecracker!” The message read Only Blaze calls me firecracker, Josh did too but he was warned I don’t think he has the nerve to ever call me that again. That leaves me to the conclusion that the unknown number belongs to Blaze. I was so happy to see his message, today won’t be boring after all I thought. “Hi Blaze, how did you get my number?” I replied “How did you know it’s me?” He asked “Firecracker duh” I replied. “Oh, right!” He said and I giggled “I couldn’t stop thinking of you all through the night, I was so worried when you left yesterday. Are you okay?” “I’m okay Blaze, I’m sorry for leaving abruptly.” “It’s okay, you don’t need to say sorry.” “You haven’t answered my question.” “What question?” “ *glaring emoji* ” “I want to call you, please answer it.” He said and my phone started ringing instantly. I left it for some time before picking it up “Hello, firecracker!” He said in his deep masculine voice. Oh God! It’s been less than a day since we saw each other and it feels like a month! I missed his voice, I missed how he talked to me yesterday, I miss his everything! “Hi Blaze,” I said. “I love your soothing voice, I could listen to it all day.” He said and I blushed. “So… who gave you my number?” I asked, ignoring what he said. “Why are you so bothered about how I got your number? Well, I found out that Josh had Karly’s number so I told him to help me ask Karly for your number. He did and she gave him your number and I collected it from him.” He explained. “Ok,” “Karly I’m going to deal with you when you get back home, betrayal!” I whispered to myself. “Did you say someth…?” He asked “No!” I replied before he could finish. “Okay..” he said skeptically “Yeah” I replied “So where did we stop yesterday?” He asked in a sultry tone. I was turned on by his sexy voice and the thought of what could have happened yesterday if we hadn’t been interrupted. Shouldn’t I be staying away from men? I should be, I can’t trust any man, I believe men are the same. What if he is just pretending not to be like the other men? Why does he make me feel this way for him? Does he feel the same about me? My heart wanted me to trust Blaze but my mind doesn’t want me to. Can I trust my heart to decide for me? I was so lost in thinking that I forgot I was still on the phone with Blaze. “Clair, are you still there? He asked. “Yes, I’m sorry I was lost in thought.” “It’s okay, what were you thinking about firecracker? I asked where we stopped yesterday and you went lost in thought. Are you thinking about what could have happened to you yesterday? “I can know you’re smirking right now, but that was not what I was thinking about.” I lied. “Don’t be shy, I know you were thinking about me Clair just admit it.” “Ok fine, I was thinking about you,” I said hesitatingly. “I knew it!” He said, I chuckled.
