Chapter 3

Rebecca. Even though my first thought was to head straight to the airport and get out of town as soon as I could, my horrible state of mind prompted me in a different direction. So I told the driver to take me to a nice five-star hotel to cool off. It still felt unbelievable that Rowland would divorce me the way he did. I could have sworn he was the most faithful husband in the world. He showered me with so much love and even though, I married him as a maid, he never treated me as one. For a moment there, I believed that I had found my happily ever after, especially since Rowland never knew anything about me other than my name. I couldn't help but think about the fact that I was so unfortunate when it came to love. I was beginning to think that maybe love and marriage weren't made for me even though I love the idea of having a family so badly. Growing up to see the love my parents shared always made me look towards having my own. They were the most lovely couple I have ever seen until they died from a chopper crash ten years back, leaving me alone with no siblings but relations who would rather judge me than support me. It's sad how my heart is broken each time I try to love someone and expect the same gesture, and please this has nothing to do with my size. I currently weigh 220 pounds, but I am not affected by it because I stand 5.9 feet tall and one of the most active people you would ever see. I know this is not about me or about how I look, but about the decisions I have made and the things I was willing to cope with all because of my desperation to be loved and wanted by someone. But, no more. I had decided to start living for myself, to love myself, and to focus on becoming a better person for my unborn child. It's funny how Rowland thinks he could console me with money after toying with my heart, only if he knew that I own more than half of his company shares. I was nothing like the broke homeless maid, he thought he married, I was rich, if not richer than he would ever be. When my parents died, they left me all their fortune which amounted to billions of dollars, from life insurance and their various investments which were scattered across the globe. My parents were leading the real estate market before their tragic death, and after they died, I decided to employ some people to head the companies and report back to me. Most people do not know me because I spent most of my life in a boarding school and when I came back home from high school, I was sent straight to university in a different country. My parents were always scared of losing me especially after my little brother died at the age of five. So they took extra time and money to ensure that I was kept away from the media. Being that I was never used to the spotlight, I shied away from anything that would put me out there. Hence the reason no one knew my face but was familiar with my name, Rebecca Power. Even Rowland couldn't connect the dots when I asked my accountant to buy a lot of shares of Rowland's company when he was struggling. I bet it didn't come to his mind that his little helpless maid-turned-wife shared the same name with his company's biggest investor, or even if it did, what are the odds? Throughout our five years of marriage, he never knew that I was a billionaire heiress disguised as a maid. “We are here ma'am,” the cab driver said as he stopped at the parking lot of a five-star hotel. I brought out my bags, paid the cab man, and headed straight to the reception to book a room. Luckily I got a royal suite on the sixth floor and it didn't take long for my things to be taken up to the room. A deep sigh eluded my lips as soon as I was left alone and to be honest, the luxury of the room didn't give me as much comfort as I thought it would. This was the first time I would be alone in five years, and it hurt to know that all my sacrifices were dashed right before my eyes. Once I had settled in, I picked up my phone to call my financial adviser to ask him a couple of questions regarding my recent investments and how the companies were faring. He however assured me that everything was fine but that someone from Rowland company had been trying to uncover my identity which I found rather odd. I told him that he should find out who this person was and what they wanted. I afterwhich called my aunty to inform her that I would be coming home in a day or two. Even though I knew she had questions, I was quick to end the call before she started. Once I was done on the phone, I ordered food, realizing that a life was growing inside of me and that helped shape the type of food I ordered. However, I noticed I couldn't eat the food as I was repulsed by the smell and even ran to the bathroom to throw up. I had to call room service to come to take the food out. I also noticed that I was becoming very feverish which made me turn off the air conditioner. I noticed I was weak and feeling tired, so I went straight to bed because I felt I needed to rest and also needed to think of my next line of action. I woke up later in the evening famished weak and a little feverish. Bored of being alone in the room, and since it was already evening, I decided to go to the restaurant to try and eat something. I took my bath got dressed in a free-flowered dress and styled my hair into a messy bun. The restaurant was on the second floor, and within minutes, I was seated and waiting for my order of fresh orange juice. I hadn't sat for up to three minutes when I saw Rowland walk in through the door wheeling Catherine who was extravagantly dressed into the restaurant. If not that I hadn't taken a sip from the juice resting on my table, I would probably have thought the juice was laced with alcohol or something. I thought Catherine was supposed to be seriously sick. I wondered. I watched as they were offered a seat beside where I sat and it was Rowland that first noticed me. “Rebecca?” He called out as if trying to ascertain I was the same person he knew. “Rowland,” I answered. “Where are you doing here?” He asked. “I should be asking you that, I thought your baby mama was sick and dying and that was why you accepted her back,” I questioned. “Such audacity, what business of yours is if I am sick or not? Rowland only told you because he didn't want to hurt your feelings but it seems I am not the only one who desires the good things in life, you were cheating on him during the period you both were married because I don't understand how you could have been able to afford a place like this barely twenty-four hours after he divorced you,” Catherine said tauntingly. “Well it must be painful for you to know that not everyone is a w***e like you,” I said and she lifted her hand to hit me but was stopped by Rowland. “Rebecca, what are you doing here, I know you haven't gotten money from the blank cheque I gave you, so how are you able to afford this place? Don't tell me you have been cheating on me, I thought you said you loved me?” Rowland quizzed while throwing me a judgmental look. “It seems I am not the only w***e in the room,” Catherine said giggling. “Stop it, Catherine,” he scolded his baby while his gaze was fixated on mine. “Rebecca, did a man bring you here? Are you lodged with a man, is that why you would accept anything I offered? How long have you been sleeping with him?” he demanded. It was his audacity for me. How dare he accuse me of something he was very much guilty of? Honestly, I was going to lose my cool when I heard a sweet husky voice from behind me “Hello darling, sorry for keeping you waiting, are these people bothering you?” The man who I was yet to see his face said. On turning to see who he was, my mouth was slightly open in shock. Sebastian Klein, CEO of Alphas Luxury Automobile. “So, he is the reason you were quick to move on without me?” Rowland asked, his voice tinged with jealousy that had me confused. I have never been so lost for words in my entire life, especially since this was the first time I was seeing Sebastian in person. “Excuse me if you don't mind you are disrupting our dinner,” Sebastian said to Rowland. “You should stay out of this because I was talking with my wife," said Rowland. “Ex-wife, you divorced her so she is mine now,” Sebastian said sternly to him. Rowland looked at me as if expecting me to say something but I ignored him while I tried to figure out what was happening with me. I was feeling weaker with each passing second, and even when I saw Rowland walking away with Catherine I still couldn't say anything. Soon everything started spinning and my vision became blurry, I could barely keep my eyes open. “Hello, Rebecca, are you alright?” I heard Sebastian's voice call out. Even though I so much wanted to tell him I wasn't, I couldn't as I slowly slipped into unconsciousness.
