Chapter 1
Rebecca
"The results will be out shortly," said the beautiful blonde-haired nurse who had just finished taking my urine and blood sample for the test.
"Thank you," I replied with a nervous smile.
Even though I already knew what the result was going to be, I was still super anxious.
Many thoughts flooded my mind as to how my husband would react if I told him I was pregnant. I noticed I had been feeling uneasy in the last couple of days and decided to take a home pregnancy test, it came back positive.
At first, I thought I was hallucinating because my husband had been careful in ensuring I didn't get pregnant just yet. After all, our baby girl was only five years old.
Although she is old enough now to have a sibling, Rowland has just not brought the topic up.
I didn't know exactly how to feel about it; of course, I was happy. I have always wanted to have a child of my own, but I wasn't sure if Rowland would be as excited as I was.
You see, Rowland and I don't have much of a love story to share, as our union only began with a contract.
I met Rowland five years ago when I first came to this town; I was introduced by an agent to Rowland to work as his maid; he was expecting a child with his now ex-girlfriend Catherine.
He was and still is the most gorgeous man I had ever seen. Tall, handsome, with nice blue sets of eyes, and had a charm that would make any girl easily fall in love with him. Well, any girl but me.
At that time, I had run away from my home to start life afresh after I was abandoned at the altar on my wedding day.
So love wasn't exactly on my plate when I decided to start working with Rowland, but that soon changed after his girlfriend left him barely two months after delivering her baby.
It so happened that Rowland was having issues with his real estate company and couldn't keep up with the luxurious lifestyle his girlfriend was putting him through.
There was always constant quarreling and fighting around the house until one day she decided to leave. She left him a note saying she was tired of having to struggle as she was too beautiful to suffer.
Rowland was devastated when she left, with his business having a major setback and a child barely two months old child to care for, he was more than broken.
After Catherine left, I was saddled with the responsibility of taking care of baby Clara. She was the most beautiful baby I had ever seen and was always full of life. Taking care of Clara was more of a hobby than a job because I have always wanted to have children of my own.
One day, Rowland came back home with a proposal that I should marry him so I could help him look after his child and at the same time help him secure his position as the senior head of board directors in his company as it had just gone public.
His investors had insisted that only marriage would make them consider leaving him as the head of directors.
I didn't think much of it as I needed something to distract me from the heartbreak I had just gone through at that time.
The contract was expected to last for five years after which I could decide what happened next.
Even though we had never agreed on what my pay was going to be, he however assured me that I would get anything I wanted at the end of the contract.
It felt awkward at first, especially when we had to act like the perfect couple before his colleagues, but with time, I started falling in love with him.
I mean who wouldn't?
Rowland was such a sweet man who knew how to make a woman feel loved and special.
It didn't take long for both of us to completely fall in love with each other.
Not long after we got married, his business flourished as a major investor put in a huge amount of money and he showered me and Clara with so much love and gifts.
There were even occasions where he confessed how much he loved and appreciated my standing by him all those years.
The first time we made love, it was heavenly, he made me feel so loved as he explored my body in ways no man has ever done.
And after that day, we became one; he would call me for business ideas and suggestions, and I always loved how he respected my opinion.
I brought up baby Clara with so much love that it was easy for everyone to believe I was her real mother.
Well, I was the only mother she knew, so, she called me mum.
"your result is out and the doctor will see you now," another nurse said to me, her voice piercing into my chains of thoughts.
"Thanks," I mumbled to her as I got up and walked into the doctor's office.
As soon as I was seated, the doctor greeted me with a smile.
"Hello Mrs Rebecca," he greeted.
"Hi," I answered, my voice suddenly high-pitched.
The doctor threw me a curious look but didn't say anything. I was sure he was wondering why a twenty-nine-year-old woman was anxious about a pregnancy result, especially since it was stated in his report that I was married.
"Well, Mrs. Rebecca, According to your test results, you are eight weeks pregnant," he said with a broad smile as he handed me the results. "congratulations," he added.
"thank you," I answered, as I scanned through the paper in my hand.
Even though part of me wanted to be excited, there was also this part that was defensive and unsure of what the future holds.
The doctor went ahead to fix my next visiting day and asked that I pick up my multivitamins on my way out.
I thanked him, and within minutes, I was heading towards my car, a gift my husband had given me on our fourth anniversary.
I drove down to Clara's school to pick her up and she was super excited as she ran towards me the moment she saw me pull into her school compound.
"Mummy," she screamed as I hugged her and kissed her cheeks.
"Hello, my love; how was school today? I asked as I carried her into the car.
"I'm fine and super excited," she exclaimed.
"And do you care to tell me why the excitement?" I questioned with a smile.
"it is because Daddy is coming back today," she giggled.
Hearing the excitement in her voice made me smile. Rowland had traveled for some days now and called last night that he would be coming home today which also happens to be our fifth anniversary.
If there was something I loved about Rowland it was how he took our special celebration very seriously and always made time to be available.
Thoughts of how I would break the news of my pregnancy flooded my mind, I was somewhat hopeful that he would be excited. Rowland loves kids and this would bring us together.
I soon got home and quickly started making arrangements for family dinner, I had baked a cake the previous day and kept it in the fridge.
I was fast in ensuring that everything was set before he arrived and I was hoping for a big compliment like he always did.
Once I was done with making all the arrangements, I went to take a quick shower and was dressed in a nice red sleeveless gown, I had just finished applying my makeup when I heard his car drive into the compound.
Within seconds, I hurried downstairs to welcome him, and as soon as he entered the sitting room, I walked towards him to hug him, as I had always done; I had missed him so much.
Rowland had a powerful aura, always well-dressed, and had a way with the sweetest things just when you need them
"you look amazing," he said to me as soon as I tried to throw my hands around him, but he pulled away, making me wonder what was wrong with him.
"thank you. I wanted to look nice for you," I answered, taking his briefcase from him.
"Yeah," he answered dryly.
I noticed something was off with his voice or was it his tone, but I didn't think much of it as I blamed it on the fact that he must be so tired from his long trip.
Clara soon ran out to welcome him, and he happily welcomed her by taking her off the floor and spinning her around, which made little Clara giggle so happily.
We proceeded to the dining table to have our dinner, and I also noticed he didn't compliment me about how much effort I had put in place for the dinner.
He always did that in the past.
Somehow, I was beginning to have this sickening feeling. We ate dinner in silence after which I took Clara to her room and tucked her in for the night.
I came downstairs to see that he was still in the sitting room.
"We need to talk," he said calmly, his eyes reaching everywhere but mine.
I was super nervous as I moved closer to sit by his side.
"Are you alright?" I asked, wondering why he was acting so cold
"yeah. I am fine. It's about us," he said letting out a deep breath.
"what is it?" I anxiously asked, my heart racing with different thoughts.
"first of all, I want to thank you for all the times you stood by me. It meant a whole lot and as you know, today makes it exactly five years since we signed that marriage contract. I want to tell you that I have already processed and signed our divorce papers, all that is required now is your signature," he said, and for a moment there, I felt my heart stop as I watched him pull out a brown envelope from his pocket.
"What are you talking about, is this some sort of joke?" I asked searching his eyes for answers.
"I am afraid, it is not, Rebecca," he said blankly.
"Then what is it?" I asked, still feeling dazzled by all that was happening.
"Clara's mum is back and she wants to come home to her daughter," he said.
