Chapter 13: The three women walked down the path through the swamp. Helena knew the sun was still above the horizon, but the thick canopy of trees created twilight around them. Sounds of the wetland could be heard as insects, and other creatures made all manner of noise. It wasn’t a peaceful stroll. “What are those lights?” Phoebe pointed off into the swamp. Her comment made Helena remember the will-o’-the-wisps stories again. “Them are just lightnin’ bugs. Their butts glow to find a mate,” Rosa informed the group. Helena quipped, “That has to make things easier.” That brought on temporary laughter from the three women, chasing away the oppressive weight of the swamp. An uneasy feeling surrounded the group.
