Episode 3: Rejected

A lot of people gathered around and I suddenly felt anxious. This is it. I don't know the outcome of this but there's nothing to lose anymore. I stepped into the water and went to Scylla's back. I grabbed the ties and we swam down to the deep water slowly and searched for the serpent's egg. My eyes widened and fear crept into my body when I saw a very huge tail. I controlled the creature that I am riding right now so that she can move slowly.

Suddenly, I saw a bright light and realized that it was the egg that I'd been looking for. We moved slowly towards the egg hoping that the serpent wouldn't be awakened. My heart is thumping fast. When neared towards the egg. It has the size of a person's head. I slowly grabbed it but then I heard the loudest growl that I've ever heard in my entire life. The beast jumped outside the water and I can hear the gasps of the people outside.

I am holding the egg into my chest and we swam as far as possible away from the serpent. The water got dark because of the silt. This time, I cannot see anything at all. I am holding the egg in one hand and the other hand is holding the tie of the creature that I am riding.

I gasp in fear when I am faced with bright big red glowy eyes in front of me. The eyes are staring at me and I cowered away in fear.

The serpent suddenly bowed which made me confused.

I've been waiting for you. A deep voice came into my head. Who was that? I looked around but the only thing that I could see was the serpent staring at me.

It is I, the serpent. I looked at the serpent in disbelief. Maybe I am dreaming? I could have just swam away right now for my life but the creature that I am riding is not moving.

I don't understand. I said to the serpent. We are communicating through our minds. I turned around when I heard a shriek which made me gasp. I saw a small serpent that is tied in chains inside a glowing cage.

You are bound to come here. I will give you a fake egg but no one will know that it is not real. Please do not take that egg in your hands. The serpent said an egg came out in its mouth and it came towards me.

Why are you doing this and why are you helping me? I asked the serpent and I gave the real egg to her.

You will soon know. Now go. The serpent said. I turn to look at the small serpent inside the cage. I want to help it. Why is it there? This whole situation doesn't make sense to me. I don't understand why the serpent is trying to help me. Why does she know that I am coming here?

The elders are the only ones who can break the cage. Do not waste more time and go. She said,

Thank you. I will forever owe you. I said to her and she bowed again. We swam to the surface and air filled my lungs. I can hear and see the people's disbelief. I can't believe it either. I can see the elder's shocked faces and finally, my eyes landed on my mate. Disbelief is written on his face and somehow, I saw relief in his eyes but maybe I am mistaken.

I handed the eggs to the elders.

"How did she survive?"

"We heard the serpent growl. Why is she not dead?"

"The serpent was awake when she was in the water. No one survives with that."

I can hear their voices in my head and I blocked their thoughts away. I can hear my wolf howling happily. I was startled when I felt a tight hug.

"Oh, my God. I can't believe you did it, Briony!" Athena's voice filled my ears and I smiled at her. Even though I survived, there are still two tasks that I need to complete.

"Unbelievable," I heard one of the elders say.

"How did you do it?" Athena asked me. I shook my head not wanting to tell anyone what happened in the water. I am still puzzled about everything.

"I don't know," I whispered.

"Since you've completed task 1. You have 2 days to rest and then proceed to task 2.” one of the elders said and then they turn to leave. I saw my mate eyeing me up and down. I looked away and Athena dragged me back to the pack house.

"She is going back to the dungeon." We stopped when we heard my mate's angry voice. I saw Athena glared at him.

"You already caused her too much trouble. Can you just give her a break?" Athena said angrily to him and I saw his eyes darken and he grabbed his sister by her collar which made me gasp.

"I am the Alpha here. I will do what I want," he growled in her face and Athena was on the verge of crying which made my heart ache.

"Let me go,” Athena cried and was trashed away from his brother's grip. She fell to the ground and I ran to her and helped her get up but my mate grabbed me and dragged me away from her. Sparks ignited in my body because of his hold but I didn't mind it. My wolf whimpered and I cann't blame her.

"I can walk on my own." anger laced in my voice but he didn't listen and still grabbed me hard which made me wince in pain.

"So you're brave now because you completed the task?" he asked menacingly. I am getting tired of him hurting me. I didn't even do anything to him.

"What did I ever do to you?"I said and it was more like a whimper. He stopped in his tracks and turned to me. He eyed me dangerously.

"Why did my mate have to be a f*****g rogue? You are weak and worthless. I bet you just got lucky in that task that's why you survived." He said in a cruel voice. My heart ached at his words. He dragged me back to the cell and locked the door.

"Don't worry. I will probably be dead by my second task and you won't see me ever again." I said to him which made him halt. Silence filled the room for a second.

"It's better that way," he said coldly.

" I, Alpha Orpheous Ebenezer. Alpha of the Moon Lake pack rejects you as my mate." After he said that, I collapsed on the floor holding my chest because of the pain. My wolf cried and disappeared from my mind.
