Skylar's POV
Jasmine and I hung back as everyone moved in. I felt awful, but it had to be this way. It didn't take long for the kingdom to realize that we were here, and alarm bells rang out. Wolves came running at us full force. We stayed in the tree line, hoping to get closer, to get to the pack house. I wanted to start with the retired king and queen, they would know. A little bit of silver in their body should make them talk. I had gloves on to protect me. Jasmine wore the same ones as she had the same knives. No one knew we had them. It was like our little secret.
I stopped as Bri was trying to take over, something was off. I pushed her back and scanned the field where all the fighting was going on and my eyes locked with one wolf, and when he started howling, Bri went nuts in my head for a second before she muttered that word I never expected to hear here. "Mate."
"We have to go now," I said to Jasmine, and took off running and when I looked over my shoulder to see him charging towards us.
"Faster," I yelled at her and I tried to move as fast as I could. I couldn't let him catch me, not here, not now. He would kill me or the king would. They wouldn't let someone that was attacking them live.
We made it to the border and when I looked back, I didn't see them again, but then I heard the most unhinged, sad, howl of my life. It dropped me to my knees, mid-run, making me cut up my hands, but I knew that Bri would heal it quickly.
"Please, go back. It's our mate." She pleaded with me.
"No. I can't right now."
"Why? He is supposed to love us."
"Do you think he would love us? We were attacking his pack. Do you think that the King would let us live?" I linked her, and she disappeared to the back of my head.
"What's wrong?" Jasmine asked, skidding to a stop.
"My mate."
"What?"
"My mate is in the kingdom. We had to run, or we would have been killed." I said.
"You don't know that."
"Did you hear that howl? It wasn't a happy one. We have to get out of here and think of a new plan," I said, and she helped me off the ground, and we took off running again.
I could feel my strength wavering after a few miles and I knew it was because Bri wasn't helping me right now. I slowed down until I stopped completely and put my hands on my knees and caught my breath.
"You, OK?"
"Yes. Bri is pissed at me and won't help me right now." I said and Jasmine laughed, "I agree with her."
"Shut it right now. We don't know what is happening. I think we need to go back to the house before anyone gets back and get our bags and figure out a new plan." I said, and she nodded, and we walked this time. It took us a few more hours to get to the cars, but something was wrong, they were all still here. They should have come and gotten them by now. Which only means they are either dead or locked in the dungeon.
I grabbed the spare key that is in a little holder, and we got in the car. Bri was still refusing to talk to me and Jasmine was still upset with me. I understood it. Meeting your mate is a big deal and I ran from mine. I already know it won't go over well. I've f****d everything up, and I don't know what to do. This is turning into a bigger mess than I ever thought it could.
I drove to the house and we both quickly showered and changed our clothes and grabbed our bags. I wasn't sure where we were headed just yet. I just needed to clear my head and come up with a plan.
When I walked out to the living room, Jasmine was sitting on the couch waiting for me. "Where are we going?"
"I don't know. I just need to get out of here and clear my head before we can come up with a plan."
"Let's go to the cabin. No one will know we are there," she suggested, and it was a great idea. I don't know why I didn't think of it sooner. Her father owned it but barely used it. We both grabbed our bags and headed to the car and got out of there as soon as possible. I headed in the opposite direction of where we had just come from and headed to the cabin. It was more like a shelter with a small kitchen and one bathroom, that was just a toilet and sink and no bedroom. There was a pullout couch for us both to sleep on.
We had a two-hour drive through the mountains, and it was a long, quiet drive. I was exhausted. I rolled the windows down, letting the cool air hit my face to keep me awake.
"Bri, are you there?" I linked her.
"What do you want?"
"I'm sorry. I really am."
"If you're so sorry, go back and find him. Tell him your apology and beg for forgiveness and tell him everything."
"He will kill us."
"You don't know that. He is our mate. He is supposed to love us no matter what. That is what the mate bond is for. It makes it hard to not love them."
"He will understand. Tell him you just want to find your father's killer. He will understand."
"No, he won't. My father wasn't exactly innocent in this. He attacked them. He was going to kill the King."
She huffed and cut our link, done trying to reason with me. I don't know if anyone could reason with me right now and that is because I don't know what I want or what to do.
I finally pulled into the cabin and we got out. I grabbed my bag and Jasmine left hers. She popped the window open and crawled inside. We didn't grab the keys when we left. I saw the lights kick on and the front door open, and she held up two things.
"We have some cans of tuna and a jar of peanut butter," she said.
"That's f*****g cat food," Bri said and I burst out laughing.
"What's so funny?"
"Bri says that is cat food."
"Ruby agrees, and said that we should let them out to hunt, and we wouldn't be hungry."
"That's fine by me, but they are the ones that are going to get in the creek and wash off. I'm not dipping into it. Its frigid cold."
Agreed." Jasmine said and started stripping out of her clothes. I followed right behind her, leaving a trail of clothes that led out of the house and as soon as we were both naked, we shifted and let our wolves take over.
They took off running, and I took a backseat and got the quietness I needed. I had no clue what was going on with my pack, but right now I don't know if I can even call them that. I abandoned them. I had this so f****d up and I had no one to blame but myself and I've dragged Jasmine into it and I don't want them to hate her either and if something happened to her father, I don't know that I could forgive myself. He is all she has. She was adopted. Her mom came to our pack a day after she was born. From what I've picked up in conversations, someone had beaten her and left her for dead. She was very pregnant and somehow lived long enough to give birth alone in the woods and found us. She died the next day. It was too much on her body. Kevin took her in and raised her as a single father. I don't know what happened to his mate. I don't know if he ever met her. Our fathers were best friends and raised us together. It's always been the four of us.
Our wolves hunted for a few hours before they found a deer to sink their teeth into, and after they ate most of it, they went to the creek to wash it off because they were a bloody mess. I could feel the coldness as soon as she stepped in, but it wasn't as if I was the one getting in the water.
After they got clean, they shook out and headed back to the cabin. I had a plan in place and I knew that Jasmine wasn't going to agree with it, so I wasn't going to tell her. We shifted back as we got to the door and we each grabbed our clothes, throwing them in a pile. I grabbed my bag and opened it up. I pulled out my pajamas and slipped into them, while Jasmine ran out to the car and grabbed her bag. She was completely naked still, but there wasn't anyone around.
Jasmine came running into the house and slammed the door shut, "It's colder than a witch's titty out there," she said, dumping her bag on the floor.
"I never understood that saying. How do you know how cold a witch's titty is?" I asked.
"Hell, if I know. It's just cold outside."
"You're a wolf, it's not that cold."
"I'm naked and that water was cold."
I just rolled my eyes at her and got to work getting the couch torn apart and, and when I pulled the bed out, dust went flying. I coughed as Jasmine dropped bedding down for me. We got to work and made up the bed, and she crawled under the covers saying she was still cold.
"If I get in this bed, and you try to cuddle me, I'm kicking you out."
"OH, don't be like that. You like to cuddle with me."
"I don't like to cuddle with anyone."
I knew that as soon as she fell asleep, she would roll over to me and cuddle. She has done that since we were little. Honestly, I think that sometimes if people didn't know better, they would think that we were lovers but were not. We've just been best friends since we were new borns. There is nothing we haven't seen or done in front of each other or been through. That is what makes my next move so hard. Like clockwork, she rolls over and throws her arm over me and snuggles into my back. I waited until she started snoring, and I knew it was time.
I eased out of bed and pushed my pillow down so she could cuddle that and pulled the blankets over her. Sneaking into the kitchen, I found a little notepad and left her a note.
Jas,
I'm sorry for leaving like this, but I've created this mess and I won't let you get tangled up in it. Run as far as you can and live your life. Find your mate and have a crazy amount of pups. You've always been my ride or die, and you are my soulmate in this life. I love you to the moon and back.
-Sky
I set the note under her phone and snuck out of the house. She was right. It was chilly outside, but I stripped down and shifted and picked up my bag with my mouth and Bri took off. We had a long journey ahead of us, but it had to be done. This was the only way to make things right. I made this mess and I will clean it up. I won't leave my pack to suffer the consequences.
