CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Late in the night, Kyle came back looking tired, she entered Mateo's room and found him asleep with Leonardo by his side.
She was glad Leonardo was also asleep because she didn't have the strength to argue with him. She kissed Mateo and Leonardo good night before entering her room to freshen up before dressing in her night robe.
Kyle laid down to sleep but couldn't so she decided to go through some files to while away time. She was so engrossed in what she was doing that she didn't notice Leonardo entering the room.
"Why are you still up?" He asked, looking at her.
"I couldn't sleep so I decided to look up some files to extricate time," Kyle explained still focused on her files.
"Oh, okay," Leonardo answered before moving to the bed.
"How was Mateo today? did he ask about me?" Kyle asked, finally looking at Leonardo.
"He asked but you weren't back, he has been happy since you told him you will be attending his presentation, please Kyle don't disappoint our son, he will be very sad if you don't make it," Leonardo said, looking at Kyle.
"I promise to be there Leonardo, I won't miss this for anything." She replied.
"Okay Kyle, goodnight," Leonardo said before he laid down to sleep.
"Good night Leonardo," Kyle said before returning to what she was doing.
The next morning, Kyle woke up to the loud noise of her son who was overly excited about his presentation. Before she could finish using the restroom, Leonardo and Mateo were gone already. She was about to walk away when she noticed a piece of paper.
"Mateo will be expecting you, please don't be late, noon sharp." She read out loud. She knew it was from Leonardo and smiled. "I won't be late." She said before leaving for work.
Kyle was at work sorting out some files when she noticed it was 11 am already. She quickly picked up her bag and was on her way out when her phone rang. She checked the caller Id and it was her husband calling her.
"Where are you? The presentation will soon begin and Mateo is already asking when you will arrive." Leonardo spoke dishearteningly.
"I am on my way already, just give me 20 minutes," Kyle replied, opening her car.
"Okay Kyle, see you there in 20 minutes." He replied before cutting the call.
Kyle was about to turn on the car when her phone rang again but this time around it was her boss and not her husband.
"Hello sir," Kyle answered immediately.
"Kyle, where are you? Did you forget about the case I told you about, the hearing is today and the judge is waiting for the lawyer representing the accused." Her boss explained.
"Was that today, I am sorry sir but my son needs me today, can't another person take up the case, I promise it won't happen again," Kyle said pleading with her boss.
"Kyle, I can't just change the lawyer, we are waiting for you, make sure you are here or you lose your job. We can't waste the judges' time." Her boss answered before cutting the call.
Kyle was confused, she didn't want to let her son down and she didn't want to lose her job also. After much thinking, she drove to the court.
Leonardo walked back to the hall where the presentation was going to take place. He was seated with Mrs. Johnson when Mateo walked up to them.
"Daddy is mummy going to make it?" He asked Leonardo.
"Yes Mateo, mummy is on her way here so just focus on what I have taught you, son, you will do great," Leonardo said, looking at Mateo.
"I am so proud of you, my grandson." Mrs. Elizabeth said, hugging Mateo. Mateo quickly went back to where he and his friends were asked to wait.
30 minutes passed and Kyle didn't make it. Leonardo knew she stood them up for one of her clients again, why does Kyle have to make our son sad? He asked looking at Mateo who was looking around to find his mother.
The presentation ended well and Leonardo and his family went out to celebrate and cheer Mateo up because his mummy didn't make it.
After the case was solved, Kyle and her client won the trial.
"Congratulations Mr.Ricardo you are now a free man," Kyle said, shaking Mr.Ricardo.
"Thank you, Mrs.Kyle, why don't you join us? We will be going to celebrate." Mr.Ricardo offered.
"Sorry sir, I can't go with you, I have somewhere to be urgent. Thank you for the offer." She replied, quickly picking up her bag to leave.
When Kyle got to the hall where Mateo's presentation was taking place, she found it empty and saw some people cleaning the hall. She asked if the event was over.
"Hello sir, is the presentation over?" She asked.
"Yes ma'am, all the parents and kids left some while ago, if you would excuse me, I have to finish cleaning." The man explained before leaving. After the cleaner left, Kyle tried to call Leonardo but he was not picking.
Kyle went home and found Mrs.Elizabeth sitted in the seating room." Good evening grandma." She greeted Mrs.Elizabeth.
"Good evening Kyle, what made you miss your son's presentation?" Mrs.Elizabeth asked with concern.
"Grandma, some people needed my help in court and I had to take up their case, I just couldn't leave them, I am trying my best Grandma," Kyle explained looking down.
"But trying is not doing, it's not good enough kyle." Mrs.Elizabeth said.
"So what do you suggest I do? Quit my job" Kyle asked looking at her grandma.
"Yes why not, you don't need the money." Mrs.Elizabeth replied.
"Money is not what motivates me to do my job." Kyle let out frustrated.
"I just can't get you, Kyle, for someone who was abducted as a child and orphaned after the early passing of her parent who was brutally murdered by her kidnappers, how can you neglect your son when you felt your parent you all alone." Mrs.Elizabeth said.
"I don't mean to neglect my son grandma, I just don't know what to do anymore," Kyle replied in tears.
"I hope one day you won't wake and see that you have lost what truly matters to you, your family." Mrs.Elizabeth said before leaving.
Kyle was about to enter her room when she saw Leonardo sitting on the balcony, Kyle walked up to him.
"Leonardo I am so sorry, I didn't mean to miss the presentation, something came up at work," Kyle explained.
"Please just stop saying sorry, enough is enough Kyle," Leonardo yelled out of bitterness.
"I am trying my best Leonardo, trust me I didn't mean to disappoint our son, I promise I will make it up to both of you," Kyle replied crying.
"Stop saying you will make it up to us one-ways or the other Kyle, you will end up breaking your promise. You keep setting us up for bigger disappointment Kyle, set things straight." Leonardo said before leaving Kyle behind in tears.
"What type of sacrifices should I make to satisfy my family?" Kyle asked herself. The only thing she could do was cry her eyes out hugging her legs.
"I have to make it up to Mateo." She promised.
