Chapter 5September, 1793 Losing James Jr. on the farm was difficult, but Sammy worked hard to make up for his brother’s absence. Lovi kept hoping though that when summer was over Sammy would be more than happy to return to Master Poole’s School for at least one more year. She was disappointed when he seemed to crave the hard work and made it clear farming would be his life. James, Jr. was also learning well in his indentured position with Mr. Cannoy. By the end of the summer he was keeping the books and managing the mercantile for a few hours alone each day while Mr. Cannoy ran the mill and his other businesses.
