“I don’t know. They’re still young.” “You’d know. If they have sight, you’ll know by the time they begin a’talkin. They see things no one else sees. Where you see images, they see people.” Closing her eyes, she turned the doll over and over between her gnarled fingers, studying the texture of the cloth dress, the roughness of the corn husk. Without a word she stood up and slowly walked to a kitchen shelf. From a wooden bowl she removed some dried leaves which she then threw into the fire. Red, green, and blue sparks flew from the logs and a pungent smell filled the air. She stood mute and motionless for what seemed like minutes. She then began to speak in a strong, clear, decisive tongue. The voice was not of an ancient woman, but rather a lurid intonation filled with energy.
