Chapter Five
Two weeks later
Davina sat in one of the waiting chairs in the lobby of her doctors office along side Maria and Alice who were flipping over the magazines that were laid out on the coffee table for anyone to read. She was nervous for her appointment, she was afraid that the doctor was going to tell her that there was something wrong with the baby but everytime she thinks about it Maria or Alice would talk her out of it by calling her crazy because she was quote on quote "healthy" but that didn't stop her from worrying.
She hadn't heard from Elio since the dinner two weeks ago and she was happy about that. The first couple of days she would double check the bathrooms to make sure he wasn't hiding in them because for some reason he liked to corner her in one. If she was being honest she felt like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders and she could finally breathe. At first, she thought it was going to be hard to move on from him especially when her mind kept playing their happy memories like a movie but as soon as those memories came back she would push them away and focus on what mattered most which was her.
Her pregnancy had gotten a little bit better, she was still feeling a little morning sickness but she wasn't throwing up everytime she felt it. Her breast had stopped hurting but there were times in the week when they felt sore but she would just wear loose clothing when those days did occur. Her parents were helping alot and her mother actually helped her find her OBGYN, Dr. Hanson.
"Davina,"
At the sound of her name Davina looks away from the Vogue magazine that she was looking at and over towards the nursing assistant who called her name.
"Good morning, my name is Cindy and I'll be helping Dr. Hanson today. How are you feeling today?" The nurse asked once the three stepped through the threshold, a bright smile on her face which Dacina thought was too early for but didn't judge as she returned the smile but not as much as she had.
"I'm alright, how about you?"
"I'm good , thanks for asking! Alright were going to be in room A4, I'm going to take your blood pressure and get your weight and then Dr. Hanson will be in shortly."
Davina nodded her head as she sat on the medical bed meant for the patient while Alice and Maria took their seats on the chairs next to the window that oversaw the beach. As Cindy took her blood pressure Davina began looking around the room. It was your typical patient's room with the bed and counter with a sink and equipment for the doctor and nurses, there were posters decorating the walls about pregnancy and the human anatomy.
"Your folder says you're about two months, is that still correct?" Cindy asked typing away on her computer, to which Davina nodded her head in response. "How often are you feeling morning sickness if any at all?"
"I was feeling it almost four times a day but now its subsided to about twice a day."
Cindy nodded her head typing away. "When was the last time you smoked or drank?"
Davina pursed her lips in thought before shrugging her shoulders. "I don't smoke but my last drink was almost three months ago."
"Perfect, okay I'll go ahead and edit this into your file for Dr. Hanson. In the meantime would you like anything to drink?"
Davina declined the offer and Cindy left the three alone in the room. Once she was gone, Alice quickly shut the magazine she brought from the waiting room and cracked her knuckles.
"Do you think pigeons have feelings?"
Davina gave Alice a weird look. "Probably? What brought that question to your head?"
Alice shrugged her shoulders. "I don't know, it was quite and awkward."
Davina rolled her eyes and looked down at her lap. "I really question what goes through your brain half the time."
Maria laughed earning a smack on her arm from Alice who just grinned at Davina.
"What if the doctor tells you that you're having twins?"
"I don't even want to think about that," Davina said shaking her head pushing away the thoughts of raising twins on her own out of her brain.
"She won't be able to find out until her next appointment. Right now Dr. Hanson is going to treat it like a physical." Maria said licking the tip of her index finger before using it to flip the page of her magazine.
"How do you know?" Alice asked to which Maria gave her her signature, are-you-kidding-me look.
"You do realize that my mother had six children after me and I went to every single doctors appointment, right?"
"Well yeah, but every doctor is different."
Maria rolled her eyes and looked over at Davina giving her a smile. "Do you know what your due date is?"
Davina shook her head. "No, but I think they might do an ultrasound because they did a physical last time I came."
"Boom! Turns out Mrs. Know it all actually doesn't know it all!"
Maria ignored Alice as she proceeded to gloat that she proved her wrong. A knock on the door broke Alice midchant as a male in his mid-fourties entered the room, a smile on his face.
"Good morning ladies, I'm Dr. Hanson how are we today?" He asked walking into the room setting Davina's folder down on the counter as he began to wash his hands.
"Good," They replied in unison.
Dr. Hanson smiled as he took a seat on the rolling chair that was meant for him his hands instantly going down to his thighs his gold wedding band glistening under the light.
"Good to hear, Davina. Cindy wrote in your chart that you're experiencing morning sickness about twice a day, tell me about that." He said as he rolled closer to her unwrapping his stethoscope from around his neck and started to listen to her heart and lungs.
"Um, there's not really much to tell. Some days I throw up while other days I just feel really nauseous for a couple hours."
Dr. Hanson nodded his head moving his hand to the left before asking her to take a deep breath.
"Do you have some trouble keeping certain foods down?"
Dacina shook her head to which Dr. Hanson nodded his head replying with what sounded like a good but Davina wasn't sure as she focused mostly on not doing anything embarrassing like accidentally burping in his face as he listened to her respiratory system.
"Alright, today is going to be a simple appointment," he said pushing himself back giving them some space. "Were going to obviously talk about some premarital vitamins that you can take and then finish with an ultrasound, sound good?"
Davina nods her head. "Great, I honestly don't mind what you take you can get them from anywhere that sell over the counter medication but I do recommend taking them for the first couple months because it does help some woman have a healthier pregnancy."
"Is there certain foods that she should avoid eating? I've read somewhere some foods could be harmful to the fetus." Maria said crossing her right leg over her left resting her elbow on her knee and her chin in her hand.
"I mean every doctor is different I just tell my patients to stay away from coffee, alcohol, nicotine obviously and anything that isn't normally consumed by an average person, but other than that no,"
Davina nodded her head. "I do have a question, before I found out I was pregnant I got high off weed, will this effect the baby in anyway?"
Dr. Hanson sighed running his hands down his thighs, his left leg bouncing as he spoke. "Honestly I can't say, there are some mothers who smoke weed their whole pregnancy and the baby comes out fine while others there were early births or stillbirth but we can't ultimately rule cannabis for those causes so technically it's hard for doctors to tell their patients if it is or isn't, was like it an every day thing or how often did you smoke Davina?"
"I used to smoke every day about a year ago but I took a tolerance break and only smoked maybe every couple months give or take," Davina responded shrugging her shoulders.
Dr. Hanson nodded his head, "I'm assuming your last time was one of those couple months?" Davina nodded her head. "How much do you think you smoked that night?"
"Not much, maybe two bowls?" Davina said making it sound like a question.
Dr. Hanson nodded his head crossing his left leg over his right, his hands interlacing at his knee. "I think you'll be fine, I obviously wouldn't stress over it but if you would like when we get a little bit further in your pregnancy we can look into doing a chronic villus sampling which is where we can check for anything, it also helps families see if their child will have Down Syndrome as well if that does run in either families," (Quick A/N: I'm not saying doing drugs/alcohol during pregnancy is safe or that it causes Down syndrome or any sort of disability!)
Davina had two cousins on her fathers side who had Down syndrome and about five on her mother's side. She wasn't sure about Elio, they never really talked about it because it was never brought up, hell she didn't even know if Elio knew that about her side of the family but then again, it's not like it'll matter to Elio either way if their child had Down syndrome he said that he didn't want to be in their life and Davina is going to respect that, plus, if her child has Down syndrome or any disability she was going to love it just as she would if they didn't.
"I'll think about it,"
"Okay, no rush take your time. Do you have anymore questions or concerns?" Davina looked over at her two friends pursing her lips in thought before looking back at Dr. Hanson with a smile.
"Nope, I think we are good."
"Great, I'll send in Amy and she'll do your ultrasound. It was nice meeting you and I look forward to helping you more. I'll see you in about four weeks." Dr. Hanson responded standing up from his little chair, shaking all three girls hands before walking out the door.
Once he was gone Davina let out a sigh and laid back down on the bed resting her left arm above her head. She hears a knock on the door making her sit up before Cindy, the nursing assistant from before entered the room.
"Hey Davina, so the first ultrasound is a transvaginal scan so all we need for you to do is take off your clothes and put this on and Amy will be in shortly,"
Cindy handed Davina the pink hospital gown with a smile before leaving the room. Davina sighed as she got off the bed and made her way to the conjoined bathroom so she could change into the gown.
"I can't wait to be an aunt," Alice gushed as Davina stepped back into the room walking straight to the bed so she didn't flash anybody her behind area.
"You have a couple more months before anything Alice, plus you said you were only going to shower it with and not change any diapers," Maria said shooting her a glare to which Alice just shrugged her shoulders.
"Do you blame me? One, I don't want s**t to get under my nails," she said holding out a perfectly manicured hand out in front of her inspecting the diamonds shining under the lights. "Second, Davina is the mother of the child and should be responsible to clean up after them."
"If that's the case you won't be their god mother because you won't change their diapers," Maria exclaimed causing Alice's mouth to drop open in shock at the girls words.
"Umm no not even! I can be their god mother!"
"No, because Davina needs somebody who can watch them when she needs them to and WILL change their diaper," Maria said emphasizing on the word will as she crossed her arms in victory as Alice just crossed her arms over her chest like a toddler and glared at her.
Davina rolled her eyes not wanting to get in the middle of the two with their fighting and leaned back onto the bed with her eyes directed towards the ceiling. She was nervous to hear her baby's heart beat especially since so many things could have gone wrong since her last appointment but she didn't feel like there was anything wrong and if there was she would have been able to feel it, right?
The sound of the door being knocked on followed by a brunette who the girls assumed was Amy because she came in wearing purple scrubs on and had a brighter smile on her face than the one Cindy on hers if it were possible.
"Good morning ladies! Are you guys excited to see the baby for the first time?"
The three nodded their heads as Amy walks over to the sink. After washing her hands she walks over to the ultrasound machine and placed purple latex gloves on.
"Alright, so this is a transvaginal scan so my little friend here," she said holding up something that looked more like a wand than anything. "will go inside your v****a and it will give us a good look at what's going on inside."
Davina nodded her heads placing her legs on the door handles on the sides at the end of the check up bed and looked up at the ceiling. Thankfully Alice and Maria were nice enough to not look at her private area and directed their attention to the television screen on the right side of the room that Amy turned on before turning the lights off.
After lubing the probe so it didn't hurt when it went inside a sound almost similar to a drum is heard making all three girls gasp in awe as they stared at the screen in amazement.
"Holy s**t, you really are pregnant." Maria whispered staring at the screen in disbelief making them all let out a laugh.
"Yep, she's definitely pregnant." Alice said shaking her head.
"Pregnant with twins actually," Amy spoke. "Baby A is right here and Baby B is right there." She said showing each embryo sack. "I think the only reason why we didn't know about Baby B the first time is because Baby A has a stronger heartbeat but from here it looks like they're both doing fine now."
Umm, come again?
"Ducking dumbass you jinxed it." Maria said smacking Alice upside the head making her yelp out in pain but Davina didn't care her eyes were glued to the screen.
Twins?
