Cheyenne’s P.O.V
It was almost closing time, so I had decided to sit on the balcony to eat my dinner because no one had sat out here as of yet and the view was so beautiful. I was looking up at the sky, watching as the hawks dovce down for their food. I saw and heard the owls as they woke up and watched as the day time birds flew back to their nests to settle down for the night. The restaurant was still doing brilliantly and tonight was a big hit as well, so much so that we were at full capacity and had customers waiting to be seated at a table. It gave me an idea of how to expand, so I called the contractor that helped me renovate this place.
“I was wondering how long it would take to build a dock onto the back of the restaurant, so that I can seat more customers and whether or not it could be done?” I asked, hoping that it would be possible.
“Hey Cheyenne, yes, it’s possible, but it would take several weeks, is that okay?” The contractor asked, making me smile.
“Yes, that will be perfect, just make sure that it's built right and nothing will get torn down or break loose. It’s going to sit a lot of people, so it needs to be strong. If it’s done like I want it then the workers will be paid well.” I said and he agreed. I hung up the phone after we had finalised the details and started thinking about how it would all come together, how it would look and what the customers would think of it, but then it also made me think of all the extras I would have to get, like tables, silverware, chairs, napkins and staff.
“Boss, are you alright? You’ve been up here for a few hours, we thought something might be wrong and by the way it looks beautiful up here at night.” Yara asked, making me jump a mile in the air. I was so deep in my thoughts that I hadn’t noticed one of my workers and friends standing beside me, but when she spoke it startled me.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you, we were all just worried, so I came up here to check on you.” Yara said, softly chuckling.
“Yeah, I’m good, I just had a slight heart attack, but I’m good.” I said, laughing as I held my chest and felt my heart racing. Yara laughed again and I shook my head as I steadied my breathing.
“I’m sorry, I was just so deep in thought, thinking about the restaurant. How long have you been standing there?” I asked, curious as to how long I had been thinking.
“Well I caught the tail end of your conversation on the phone and after that you zoned out, so I have been here a while, but you were so deep in thought and it looked serious, so I didn’t want to disturb you. Can I ask if there is something I can help with or do you want to talk about whatever it is you were thinking about?” Yara replied, smiling.
“I have just asked for a dock to be built so that we can seat more customers and I was going over everything that we were going to need. I’m going to have to hire a few more people for it and I’m hoping that the people I hire will be just as good as all of you. I know the tips can suck sometimes, but the paychecks are still good. I’m also going to need to get a new assistant manager to help out because the last one decided that she wanted to help herself, so I fired her after I broke a few of her sticky fingers of course. So how about it?” I asked, but Yara gave me a confused look.
“Yara, we have been close even before this place opened up, we went to school together and I trust you, so how about it? Do you wanna be my assistant manager?” I asked and Yara looked at me in shock.
Yara’s P.O.V
I was shocked when Cheyenne asked me to become the new assistant manager, I mean sure we have known each other and been friends for years, but when she said she trusted me I felt so guilty. I had been keeping something from her for all these years, a secret that I could never tell her and I felt bad about that because she was so open with me, but the job offer was one I couldn’t refuse. It was perfect for me and I would love to do the job, especially as I already knew how to. So why the hell not.
“Cheyenne, I would love to be the assistant manager here and I already know the paperwork and all the computer stuff. You trained me just in case you weren’t here, but who will replace me?” I asked, but Cheyenne shook her head.
“I honestly don’t know, I know that I will need to hire more staff, but finding them is going to be hard.” Cheyenne replied and it made me think.
“I have some cousins that are looking for work. I can bring them in tomorrow and you can talk to them.” I said, hoping that she would give them a chance. Cheyenne was deep in thought for a few minutes, thinking it over and I knew that she knew that she needed to hire more people, but that also meant that she would have to train them up and make sure that they did everything right.
Cheyenne’s P.O.V
I really do need more staff, especially with the new dock and how well the restaurant has been doing, but after finding out what the old assistant manager was doing I was a little sceptical and I also didn’t want to ruin the friendship I had with Yara if things didn’t turn out well. I would need to make sure that they didn’t try to take over the restaurant as well. Maybe this would work and maybe it wouldn’t, but it was a risk I was willing to take.
“Alright, bring them into the restaurant and make sure that they know what they are walking into. Make sure that they know I am the boss and what kind of boss I am. The same rules apply to them as everyone else, so if they break something then it comes out of their paycheck, if they try and take control of my restaurant then they will get fired. If they steal others tips they will get fired and if they get a no call no show then they get fired. I run a tight ship here, but I am fair, so let them know and if they can deal with the rules then they are more than welcome to work here. Obviously I will need to meet them first to make sure that this is really what they want to do and they will be on a trial basis for the first thirty days, after that if they stick it out then they will be fully employed.” I replied and Yara nodded.
“Great, I’ll let them know. We are about to close up and everything has already been cleaned, the dishes have been done, clean napkins are folded and placed on the tables as well as clean silverware. The glasses are washed and ready to be put on the tables in the morning and the food, that could be prepped, has been and has been put in the fridge to keep it fresh for tomorrow.” Yara said and I nodded.
“Alright, well let’s get going. I don’t know about you but I’m pretty tired, so I could do with a good night's sleep.” I replied, getting up from my chair and grabbing my plate, cutlery, glass and napkin to take down to the kitchen to wash up. Yara nodded and went ahead, leaving me to finish up and after I was done I locked up and got in my car, heading home for what I hoped would be a relaxing night. I knew that tomorrow was going to be busy with customers and also interviewing Yara’s cousin’s for the new and upcoming staff roles. I just hope that they were all hard working and decent.
