Chapter 9

2246 Words
Angelique just looked at a motionless man, she knew he was her grandfather, who left her once again.  She was emotionless and all she could feel was pain. Her body ached, especially her throat. She remembered what happened and she supposedly felt sad, grieving, or mad. But she couldn't feel at all.  She was looking into space, not knowing what to do. She does not have anyone that she can ask for help too. The remaining family that she had already passed away.  She sighed.  “Mama, I hope I am strong like you,” she whispered, hoping her mother heard her. Hoping Susan was there to comfort her, to give her some advice. She was dependent on her mother all her life, but now that she was gone, she did not know what to do anymore.  She looked at her grandfather. She felt sorry for herself because she didn't even talk to him before he died. She knew that he sacrificed himself for her sake.  She remembered how the healthy old man came inside their house that was on fire. Her so-called father, Lucio, thought she died but she was still alive, barely.  She saw this guy slit his wrist and let her drink the blood. After gulping some of it, she fell into a coma. She didn't know how this old man carried her out of that house.  “When I become healthy and survive this, I will do what you asked me to do. I will grant your last wish, grandfather.” She didn't even know his name, all she knew was that he was her so-called father's father. She saw him in her dream, and she can say that her grandfather is a good man. But it is too late for her to know him more.  She laid down properly and stared at the roof. She was laying on a bamboo bed, and she was inside a hut. It may be safe but there is no safer place now, even in the comfort of your own home, the danger will keep knocking on your door.  She scowled when she remembered the guy who took everything to her. Maybe she didn't have a pleasant life, but the only thing, or person, that still kept her sane was gone. He took her like she was just a useless human.  “Revenge,” she whispered to herself.  She did not have anything. She didn't know where to start. She just stared at space remembering her past until her eyelids closed on her own. She got drowsy and then she fell asleep.  Seconds, minutes, hours… time passed by so fast. She was asleep for hours until it struck midnight.  Slowly, the moon peeked and shined so bright. But it never bothered Angelique. But as time passed by, her face knitted like she was in pain. Sweat dripping on her forehead and she was shaking. An uncontrollable chill crawled on her spine.  Angelique's eyes got wider and her mouth was agape. She was surprised and didn’t know what was happening. But all she could feel was the ache. How her bone felt like breaking into pieces and constructing into another form, and her muscle enlarged and changed its shape.  It was so painful that all she could do was lay down on the bamboo bed and suppress her scream from coming out of her mouth. She wanted to scream, so bad, but she could not do that. She still thought about her safety.  She heard howling not far away, and then she knew she was not safe. She was not too naive to understand what was happening to her.  She assumed that today is her eighteenth birthday because only a few more days before her birthday the incident happened. According to the myth she had read, she was a bookworm, it is the time for werewolves to transform into their wolf form.  She was not excited because it would just remind her of Lucio. But who will stop her faith? This is what she is, so she needs to endure all the pain. No one will hold her hand to comfort her, that everything will be alright after. No one there but herself to endure all the pain: physically, emotionally, and mentally.  She writhed because of the excruciating pain. She couldn't breathe too but she needed to fight it.  She did not have anyone to support and helped her. She just closed her eyes letting pain slipped into her body. She never noticed she blackout because of it.  Angelique woke up, groggy. But she noticed that she could hear and smell the surroundings clearer. She felt alive even though she was sore.  When her eyes got a clearer view, she almost stumbled because of awe. She could see things clearer and like it was zoomed by a camera. Even a small ant in the corner, dust on the wall, and every smallest thing her eyes can see, she could see it.  “I think I like myself now,” she said, no one in particular.  She left her hand and she saw how her nails got longer and sharper. She remembered how this claw could be deadly, a weapon that surely kills.  She also has some fur on her body. It was smooth and short that she can clearly see with her eyes. The color is called midnight black that shines through the moonlight. She touched her face and she felt that she had a snout, like a wolf. She became taller, wider, and stronger. She liked the changes.  Angelique tried to stand up but her bones were like in a newborn baby. They are soft and she couldn't stand up easily. She was like a new cub that needs to exercise before she can walk.  She forced herself until she could stand, holding on to the edge of the bed. The pain on her neck was gone, so she took off the bandage.  She felt thirsty. Walking was still hard but she forced herself and she managed to go to the kitchen. One step at a time really works for her.  There's water on the pail. She drank from it until she was satisfied.  With the help of the moonlight, she saw her reflection on the water. Even though she was inside, the moon was bright like a bulb. It really illuminated inside the hut.  She saw her appearance. Whoever saw her will say she was strong. Her fur was all black and it was really attractive.  She should be happy knowing her origin, but she can not. It was also the reason why she lost all of her loved ones. She just liked how she looked because she felt strong, but inside she was empty.  She tried to walk inside the house until she learned how to control it. She felt that she was not strong enough to come out. Other creatures were still nearby and she could hear them. If she comes out, she might put her second life in danger.  She drank some more and decided to sit on the bed. She looked at her dead grandfather, feeling sad that she hadn't had the time to bond with him.  “Do you really want me to stop your son, or kill him?” she asked the old man as if he would answer her. “You know, I don't want to do it if I am in my previous life. If my family is still alive, I am sure I will say no. I’m not that kind of person that will harm others and might kill them.” She sighed.  “But now is a different story.” Fury was evident in her eyes. “That monster was the reason I lost the only family I have. My mother will surely scold me if she hears my thoughts. She was not a violent person, and it is against her. But now that she’s gone, I can do whatever I want. I don't care anymore.” Angelique looked up and released a deep breath into her mouth. Her heart was hurting and it helped her to relief. “I will do it. I will avenge all the people he hurt. I know, I’m not the only one. I promise I will do your wish… grandpa.”  Then she looked at the space, planning what she will do next. She saw her state, so she looked for a solution in the book. The said content, shifting, was on the first page. She read it and managed to shift back. But not with the pain on her body that made her lose her consciousness.  When Angelique woke up the next morning, the sun was already up and she felt better too. Like her body was new and never went through a trauma. She can see that she also grows taller by inch.  Angelique was healthy and strong enough that she can run many miles, back and forth.  She sat up and stared at the place. She saw her grandfather and decided to bury him. Soon he will rot and it is not a nice thing to see. Also, it is degrading for a dignified former Alpha.  She sighed and stretched her body. Her bone popped up a little and it was a good feeling.  She looked for food but she couldn't find anything inside the house. There's a soup that was already spoiled, she couldn't eat that.  Angelique walked outside the hut and saw the trees bearing fruit. It was enough to solve her hunger and can give her the strength she needs for her next task.  She gathered some fruit and started to eat. She didn’t appreciate the taste of the fruit, which is different from when she was still human. But she didn't have any choice but to consume what was available.  After eating, she looked for the tool she can use to dig a hole. Whatever she will do, she couldn't find any tools. The only thing the old man had is a pan and all his utensils were made of bamboo. Angelique could also tell that he used his sharp nails to do those things.  She didn't have any choice but to dig a soul with her bare hands. The ache on her body was gone, she can move freely to do it.  The soil was a little moist, it became easy for Angelique to do her task. After some time, she was done. The pit was deep, no animals will dig him up again.  She went back inside the house. Using the only blanket they have, she wrapped the old man on it and lifted him up. His weight was nothing to her. He was stiff already so it became a little harder for Angelique to bring him out but she managed at the end.  She slowly put the old man’s body on the pit. She looked at him for the last time.  “Please, say hi to my Mama when you see her,” she said. Then using her hands again, she covered him with the soil.  She planted some flowers on the grave she made. She bitterly smiled before she went inside the house. But she paused when she saw her situation; mad covered her body and for sure will dirt the house.  She sighed and looked for a way to clean herself. She took a deep breath, hearing her surroundings until she heard a stream.  Fats were still visible on her body, so it was still hard for her to walk faster even with her strength now. She took her time before she got to the stream.  The water was clean and it was nice to take a bath there. So she did.  She took her clothes off then she washed them. No one could see if she went naked.  After cleaning the clothes, she put them on top of the big stone for them to dry then she took her bath.  The water was a little warmer which is good for her aching and sore body. It was the best remedy she felt for the day.  While she was cleaning herself, she saw a fish swimming around her. She followed it and she got hungry. She wanted some fish, so she caught one without thinking she would eat it raw. When she came to her senses, she had already eaten all the fish.  “I should accept it now. I am different and this is me now,” she told herself and caught a fish again for her to eat. Maybe she was devastated, but she still needed to survive to have her revenge. She can not fight back if she’s dead.  When she was done eating, taking a bath, and changing her clothes, she concluded that she needed to go home. It was getting dark and it was not safe.  She was right.  Because while going home, she was almost caught by other werewolves who were passing by.  “I really smelled a werewolf in our territory. We need to catch it before Alpha finds it first. Because we will be dead if he knew,” a bearded man said to his team.   “Sh*t!” Angelique cursed inside her head. “I should leave if I want to survive. I have to look for a place to stay. ”
