Chapter 5 - BAIT

1229 Words
“Bait huh?” Annette slid her hand into her side pocket still feeling a bit light headed, she brought out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter and placed one between her lips then lighted it. She pulled it out from between her lips and puffed out a cloud of smoke. “I definitely have no idea what is going on, so you’ll have to enlighten me” she grinned “It’s a Vladimir secret, no one is aware of it exactly but sometimes a very powerful being springs up from the Vladimir lineage… who ever attacked your parents probably planned to end the lineage so if they knew about you they most definitely would come after you” “Powerful being?” Annette tilted her head with her cigarette between her fingers trying to understand what Louisa was talking about. Louisa walked up to her and took the cigarette from her hands. “Like I said it’s a Vladimir secret so I have no idea what it is exactly but one thing is sure the Vladimir’s were one of the last race of vampires but along the way they became humans with extraordinary reflexes and then this beast began to appear within their lineage – we call it the Omni-wolf” she placed the cigarette between her lips and smiled “Our world is more complicated than you think” “Not quite, I think it’s fascinating” Annette had known that there was something about this world that was hidden under the shadows so none of this surprised her a bit, well apart from the part that she was from a lineage of vampires. “I love your spirit” Louisa stated placing her hands on Annette’s shoulders “I’ll be in touch, it’s getting really late and your cop friend seems really worried” Annette eyes popped up at this statement “don’t tell me he’s here” she whispered to herself Byron stood by the dock feeling really uneasy, he’d checked through all the building around the dock but didn’t find anything at all “Where the hell are you” he muttered, the evening was really cold so his breath could clearly be seen in the air. He rubbed his hands against his bureau jacket and pointed his flashlight over the line of boats that were tied by the dock. “You do have guts coming down here in that jacket” Annette silvery voice stated from behind him and he turned over almost immediately. “s**t! What the hell Anne… where have you been?” he walked up to her, his torch flashed across her eyes and she blocked the impact of the light with her hand “sorry” he muttered turning of the light and placing it in his belt bag. “Why are you here?” she asked looking around and folded her arms to give herself some warmth, she hadn’t notice how cold it was. “Do you know what time it is, I was worried sick” Annette paid no attention to him and continued to stare around the street “Don’t tell me you brought a police car” she stated searching for his vehicle and brought out a cigarette as she did. “I’m not that dumb” Annette paused for a bit and stared at his jacket and then back at him with a questioning look on her face. “I was cold okay” “You should have worn it inside out then” she tapped her index finger gently against her head. “Lets just get out of here, this place gives me the creeps” Bryon stated walking ahead of her and she followed behind. “Why wouldn’t it, this place is crawling with criminal who definitely loathe you” she swung her hand over his shoulder and grinned cheerfully. “How did it go?” he asked as they arrived a black SUV “Met my aunt” Annette replied entering into the back seat and laying behind with her legs crossed. She puffed smoke circles into the air and Byron coughed as he got into the SUV. “At least put down the glass first” he said turning on ignition. “Yeah yeah” Annette pressed the button at the side of the door and watched as the glass slid down. “Your aunt huh?” Byron muttered as he drove through the busy street. “Yeah, strange right” she sat up from the backseat leaning her arm on the passengers seat “She didn’t seem to be lying though” she added staring at the open street before her. “Anne be careful, you can’t trust just anyone” “Who said I did…” she leaned backwards and crossed her legs on top of the armrest between the driver’s seat and the passenger's seat while placing her cigarette between her lips “…it’s obvious she wants to have revenge on the bastard because of my mother but I could tell she wanted nothing to do with me and she made it clear” “Really?” Byron glanced at her through the rear mirror trying to understand what she meant. “She said she wanted to use me as bait” she grinned lightly “she’d had gone on with her revenge a long time ago but it seems she can’t do it without me” Byron stopped the car as they finally arrived Annette apartment and turned over to face her “So… what do you plan to do?” “Play along” she replied and alighted the vehicle, she walked over to the front and peeked through the window “You should know I am always one step ahead” “Just be careful” “I will” she stepped away from the vehicle and waved Byron as he drove off. “Louisa Lane” she muttered to herself as she walked into her apartment. She never expected such a surprise but she welcomed it, she walked into her dark apartment and headed for her room… For some reason the words the 'Vladimir secret' sounded so familiar to her, she was sure her dad had said something about it before or she’d read it somewhere. Turning on her room light she rolled up the carpet on the wooden floor and traced the floor with her hand looking for some kind of opening, her fingers slipped into a small opening and she pulled up the wood revealing a small compartment in the ground. She pulled up a carton box that laid inside the compartment and stared at it for a while before opening the box. Old pictures of her and her parents laid inside the box as well as other of her parents belongings, just staring at them brought tears to her eyes but tried her best to hold them back. She picked out her father’s old leather journal and blew of the dust that laid upon it, she opened up the journal and stared at it for a while “Argh! I can’t understand a dang thing in this journal” she exclaimed staring at the strange language written in the journal. She laid her head against the bed stand and sighed “One day you’d finally be at peace”
