Chapter 4: Michael's Story

1044 Words
The warriors came back... but almost half of them were either lifeless or on the brink of death. It was a horrible sight to see.  The families who lost a loved one cried and wailed. Some were trying their best to revive and help those who still had a chance. In the midst of the crowd stood a boy seemingly frozen on the spot as he looked in a certain direction. He didn't know what to feel or how to react. Numbness spread from his heart and it swallowed his body whole. The boy finally made a step. Each step slow and steady.  As he got closer to the location, the situation got clearer. He wanted to stay strong and he didn't want to cry because he was always taught that crying was a sign of weakness.  He tried, he did but how could he not when the same person who he held in high regard was laying on the ground, blood-spattered on his body, and wounds that were still dripping with blood covered his arms, legs, and stomach. The man on the ground who was trying his best to stay awake saw the little boy. He waved his hands into a 'come here' motion as he looked at the boy. He knew that his time was nearing, he could feel it and the last thing he wanted to do was to talk to his son. The boy called Michael saw the gesture and went to stand by his father's side. His father's situation shattered the young Michael. As if a dam that broke, big amounts of tears fell from his eyes and streamed down his cheek. Feeling the tears on his face, he raised his hands and wiped his face rapidly to get rid of the tears. "I didn't mean to cry, dad. I'm sorry..." Hearing this and seeing his actions the man used every bit of whatever energy he had left to move his body in a sitting position. The pack members who saw him moved in and helped him sit up. Michael's father raised his hand and brought it to his son's face.  "Sometimes it's okay to cry son," he said. "You're the man of the house now. Take good care of your mother and sister for me okay?" Michael nodded his head and promised that he will. This time his mother arrived carrying his little sister in her arms. The mother quickly handed her daughter to her son and kneeled down next to her husband. She cupped his face and gave him a quick kiss. Looking at his situation everyone knew he would not survive, he has lost too much much blood that the healing ability they have wouldn't help his situation. The husband and wife had their hands intertwined and said something to each other. Not long after the hands that were holding his mother's hands went limp the same time his eyes closed and his breathing stopped. Michael went still but he already expected that this would happen but the little girl in his arms did not know what was going on. "Daddy!" she called her father in a cheery voice everyone who heard this felt their heartbreak. Burial ceremonies were then performed for those who sadly passed away. Everything from the preparation to the burial went on until the third day. ... Michael and Lucas finally decided to leave the skate park and went home. When Michael opened the door of their home he was greeted by his sister, Emily, sitting on the living room couch watching some romance film. "Where's mom?" "She's in the kitchen," Emily answered while munching an apple. She looked at her brother's hands and frowned when she didn't see the ice cream she had asked him to buy. She sent Michael a glare, "Where's my ice cream?"  "Oh yeah, heh, I forgot," Michael replied and quickly strode towards the direction of the kitchen where he saw his mom preparing dinner for them. He heard Emily cursing him back at the living room which made him chuckle. "Michael you're back! Can you wash the vegetables for me, dear?" He began rolling up his sleeves and began washing the vegetables. Looking at his mom, she didn't look like she had lost her mate in fact she was even glowing and remained beautiful as ever. He read somewhere about how the humans portrayed werewolves going insane after losing a mate but contrary to what humans believed in losing a mate does not equal to losing one's insanity while this is partly true, it actually has another side to it. Yes, a werewolf can go crazy and lose its sanity but it only happens when they refuse to accept it. They would slowly crumble and start losing their ability to think, some would even start getting out of control for the grief of losing someone they love has taken control of them. But once a werewolf accepts the truth about losing their mates, they would continue to live a stable life although it does not change the fact that their mates were gone. The latter was his mother's situation. Michael was thankful that his mother did not lose control. He did not want to lose his mother after already going through the situation of losing someone he dearly loved. "Were you out with Lucas?" his mother asked as he gave her the vegetables he washed. Before answering he took a sip of water that he got from the fridge. "Yep, I saw him at the park on my way to the convenience store." "You should've invited him over for dinner." Emily who just entered the kitchen joined in the conversation. Michael scoffed and started poking fun at his sister. "Heh, admit it, Emily. You just want to see Lucas." His sister glared at him in return.  "Shut up." She harrumphed, got up, and exited the kitchen. Sometimes she could not stand this annoying brother of hers.  Their mother who watched from the sidelines lightly scolded Michael for teasing her daughter.  "Hurry and wash up now and we'll eat dinner." He quickly went to his room and changed his clothes.  After they ate, the family of three huddled together in the living room to watch a movie.
