Mrs. Davis’ stern expression softened when she saw her son’s pitiful look but she immediately toughened her heart and her face returned to a stern expression once more.
Lucas stopped what he was doing when he saw his act wasn’t working on his mom anymore.
He sat up straight and let out a nervous laugh. “I’m sorry ma… I just didn’t want to disturb you.”
“Still, you should always tell me whenever you want to go out. I don’t want hearing news of you going missing or hurt.” Mrs. Davis stood up from her seat and went closer to her son to engulf him in her arms.
Lucas was startled as he did not expect that his mother would suddenly hug him. He couldn’t remember the last time he was in the comfort of his mom’s arms.
It felt good. It felt warm and safe.
“Please don’t do that again okay? Don’t let me worry, son. I don’t know what I would do if something ever happens to you.” She said in a soft voice. Her features showed how worried she was just thinking about the possibility of her son getting hurt or worse he might end up lifeless.
Just the thought of her son in that situation made her stomach churn. She did not want that. She did not want to lose one of the people that brings her joy.
Mrs. Davis continued lecturing her son.
Lucas was somewhat listening to his mother speak but oddly her hug bought him immense comfort and the thoughts that were disturbing him before completely vanished.
His mother’s voice sounded like a lullaby to his ears and it made him sleepy. He was trying his best to stay awake but shortly after he succumbed and went to a night of deep sleep.
Unbeknownst to Mrs. Davis, the person in her arms was already asleep. She was speaking about how Lucas took after his father when she felt her shoulder getting heavier.
She paused to look at her son and found him with his eyes closed, already asleep, his breaths were even and occasionally soft snores could be heard from him.
A sweet smile bloomed across Mrs. Davis's face that made her features look younger than her current age.
She gently laid down the sound asleep Lucas on the couch and made him comfortable.
Mrs. Davis would have carried her son upstairs to his room but she wasn’t as strong as before and besides her son has grown a lot through the years.
Mrs. Davis took off Lucas’s shoes and jacket. Then, she went to get blankets from the other room and covered her son with them. After that, she made sure that all windows and doors were tightly locked before she went upstairs and laid on the bed.
She would have loved to sleep on the opposite sofa with her son but she was getting old and sleeping on the sofa would just cost her body to ache.
…
Lucas woke up to the smell of coffee wafting to his senses. ‘It’s morning already?’ He groaned and got up to stretch his body.
‘Why’s my body sore? Has it been that long since we shifted?’
He looked around and it took him quite a while to realize that he slept on the living room couch last night. ‘Well, that explains it.’ He stretched some more to get rid of the discomfort he was feeling.
It wasn’t badly sore but it just felt uncomfortable for him.
Lucas then folded the blankets he had used and arranged the pillow on the couch.
His eyes moved to look at the wall clock hanging close to the main door.
‘Sh*t, I’m going to be late.’ He ran towards the kitchen and grabbed the toast prepared by his mother. Mrs. Davis was startled by Lucas’s actions.
He munched on the toast at a fast pace causing him to choke. His mother quickly gave him something to drink which he took and drank all in one go.
“That’s all you’re eating?” His mom asked which replied with a yes.
Sprinting up the stairs to his room, he quickly washed his face, brushed his teeth, and changed his clothes. All these series of actions took him eight minutes. He then grabbed his board and went down the stairs.
“Ma, I’ll head to school now!” He shouted for his mom to hear him. Without waiting for his mother’s reply he boarded on top of his board and swiftly went past the streets.
…
Michael arrived at 9:30 AM, he walked with a spring on every step he took. He arrived at his destination but what welcomed him was an upset Lucas sitting on the park bench where they usually hang out inside the university.
‘I can almost see a dark fog surrounding this guy.’
Lucas was sitting on the bench arms crossed and a frown on his handsome face.
Michael walked towards him and he noticed that dark circles were visible under his eyes.
He wanted to put his arms around Lucas’s shoulder but was immediately stopped by a fierce glare from his friend. Michael put both his hands up to surrender.
He sat next to Lucas but maintained a far distance, his butt was positioned at the end of the bench. He took a deep breath before asking his friend what was wrong.
“Did something happen?” he cautiously asked.
“Nothing.” Michael was disappointed by his friend's reply. He did not want to seem nosy so he gave up getting answers from his friend.
‘Maybe he’s just not feeling well.’ Michael concluded. ‘He might tell me if I act uninterested about it.’
Lucas can clearly read what Michael was thinking about. He looked at Michael’s smiling face and shook his head.
‘I would never tell anybody about this. Never!’ Lucas thought to himself.
Lucas couldn’t bear the embarrassment he would feel once someone discovers it.
“Why are you turning red?” he heard Michael say.
“Shut up.” That was all he could say as he was too embarrassed to even think about the incident that happened earlier that morning.
