Chapter Three

1023 Words
Lily pulled up to the street and stopped at the driveway to the pack house.  It was a large brick house.  More like a mansion.  There were a few lights on inside.  It was about 9:45 in evening.  Lily hadn’t expected to drive me here at night but I convinced her that by coming here in the evening the better my chances were that Alpha Anthony would be home. “Stop that!  You mustn’t call him Alpha Anthony.  He obviously doesn’t want to be called that since no one knows that’s his name,” she snapped. “Okay, okay,” I said as I took off my seat belt. “Please don’t say anything stupid.  If he says no or gets angry just apologize and leave.  Okay?” “Okay, Lily,” I looked at the pack house. “So, do I just go up and ring the doorbell?” I looked at her. “Yeah.  Come on.  Let’s get this over with,” she said as I got out. “Okay, I got this,” I was more trying to assure myself than her. “I am going to go park up the street,” she said and drove off.     Coward.  I couldn’t blame her much though.  I was her guest and she was responsible for me while I visited her and I was now going out of my way to disrespect her Alpha.     Oh well, I had to try.  I couldn’t let the ‘what if’ eat away at me.       I rang the doorbell and about a minute later someone answered the door.      It was Delta Cameron.  Damnit. “Leona.  What are you doing here?” he had a stern look on his face.  If anything, he was slightly pissed.     I almost forgot how handsome he was when he was standing next to Anthony.  But after seeing Anthony earlier, Cameron couldn’t even compare to him.  “I…I…I wanted to ask Alpha Anth—Harkin to reconsider my transfer request.  Can I please speak to him?” I managed to get the words out.     I cursed myself for almost using his first name.  I hoped Delta Cameron hadn’t noticed.  “No.  You may not.  Alpha Harkin’s decision is final,” he said. “What is his reason?  Did I do something wrong?” I asked desperately. “I know you know better than to question an Alpha’s authority, Leona.  Rock City has the same rules as us.  To question Alpha Harkin’s authority is like challenging the Alpha himself.  You do that and you die.  Now, I suggest you leave,” and he shut the door in my face.     His voice was heated with anger.  I was really starting to annoy him.  I stood on the stoop and wondered if Delta Cameron would mention my visit to Alpha Harkin.  Probably not.  I need to speak with Anthony directly.  How was I going to do that?  I started to formulate a plan B in my head.       I went back to Lily’s car.  I sat in the passenger seat and took a couple deep breaths.  “Let’s get out of here,” she went to start her car. “No.  I just need a minute.  I am going back in there.” “You’re what?!” she exclaimed. “Delta Cameron answered the door and shooed me away.  I need to speak to Anthony.  I have to go back and find him,” even I thought I sounded crazy. “Oh no!  No way!  Leona, seriously, you could be punished.  Breaking and entering into the pack house is dangerous,” said Lily. “Lily, I have to!” I snapped at her.     She sat back in her seat and shook her head.  Lily ignored me but she didn’t move her car.  I took that as a win even tough she was probably hating me right now.     We waited in silence for another forty-five minutes and I got back out of the car.  “Just go on home, Lily.  I don’t want you to get in anymore trouble if this all goes south,” “Leona, be careful,” she said. “I will,” and I walked to the pack house.       When Delta Cameron rudely shut the door in my face, I noticed I didn’t hear him lock it.  I also didn’t recall hearing him unlock it to open it.  In a town full of werewolves, most of us didn’t bother locking our doors.  A key part in my new plan to speak to Alpha Harkin.     As expected, it was unlocked.  I quietly pushed my way in and crept up the stairs.  There weren’t many lights on downstairs so I surmised that he was upstairs.     I had just made it to the second floor when someone was below me heading up the stairs.  I had to make a snap decision.  I decided to climb up to the third floor and hope they wouldn’t follow.      The footsteps trailed off down the second-floor hallway.  This pack house was huge and hard to navigate in the dark.     I knew that my scent might be my downfall if anyone noticed a foreign scent within their house.  I had to be quick in a pack house full of wolves.     I tiptoed on the top floor and moved down the hallway.  There were doors on either side.  I thought I was just going to have to pick one and open it but then that strange feeling washed over me.     The choking, the humidity.  It started to suffocate me.  I didn’t dare cough.  I followed this torturing sensation to the door it seemed to be seeping out of.  I saw black dots from lack of oxygen.  I steadied myself and lifted my sweaty hand to knock on the dark wooden door.     The door jerked open before the first knock.
