Chapter One
I sat in her small living room as she went over the plan for tomorrow. I was so grateful to have a friend like Lily. She knew I was desperate to join her pack. It wasn’t that I didn’t like the people at my current pack. It was the fact that it held so many sad memories. I was looking for a fresh start now that I was an adult. I had the blessing of my current Alpha, Alpha Mark Carson, to petition the Alpha of Lily’s pack for permission to transfer. I knew my odds were good. I had been in guard training since I was thirteen so I was a skilled warrior. Packs were always inclined to accept members with special skills. And it wasn’t that uncommon for people to change packs Lily was the only person I knew that belonged to a different pack. She was my best friend from childhood. Her mom and her moved to my pack, the Rock City Pack, and we met in kindergarten. She moved there to take care of her grandmother and when her grandmother passed away, she and her mom moved back to Blue Dawn. They left right before we started high school. We obviously kept in touch since and she agreed to let me stay with her at her house while I got acclimated in her pack. Even though I was technically only visiting her for a week I brought all of my stuff. I was hoping that her pack would approve of me joining them. “So…You will go with me to training tomorrow and I will give the letter Delta Cameron and ask to give it to the Alpha for consideration. It would be good to show him how good of a fighter you are. It would only help our chances,” said Lily while pacing the room. “Why don’t we go to your Alpha or Luna directly? Why the Delta?” I asked her. “Ha. Are you joking?” I stared at her not knowing what to say. The Alpha had to approve any new pack members that wished to join. The Luna could also grant permission. “You don’t speak to the Alpha! And you will rarely see him. He’s unapproachable and busy. Even the Beta is always occupied. Delta Cameron oversees the training of the guards so he is the one we will go to.” I nodded. “And we don’t have a Luna,” she scoffed. “Why not? How old is your Alpha?” I asked “He’s almost thirty maybe? I guess he hasn’t found his mate. Like I said he’s very busy,” she pondered. “Don’t you think its weird that your Alpha is a recluse?” “I don’t know. It’s how it’s been since I’ve been back here so I’m just used to it. But there is this rumor…” Lily’s voice trailed off. I was trying to learn everything I could about my future pack so of course I was interested. Time for the dirt. “Go on,” I nudged her. “It’s just a rumor, Leona, but… Some people say that Alpha Hank is gay,” and she shut her mouth. “Okay and?” I asked. “And what? That’s it. They say he is gay and that’s why he hasn’t found his mate and Luna,” she said. “Gay wolves can find mates too. It’s more common than you think. And why couldn’t two partners run a pack together? The Moon Goddess send you your perfect mate and doesn’t discriminate,” I told her. “I know mates aren’t always a boy and girl, Leona. I wouldn’t care if he was gay but its just the fact that the rumor is floating around and no one is confirming it or denying it,” she said. I knew she wasn’t closed minded. This was a juicy piece of gossip. I wondered how true it was for a moment. Maybe someone threw it out there because he still hadn’t found a mate. Usually by thirty he would’ve found someone. But Lily said she can’t recall ever hearing about any of his relationships. Not surprising for a recluse. “Well, goodnight. Be ready to leave at six tomorrow morning,” Lily ordered with a smile. “Night.” ****** We went to the training center and began working out on the mats in a large gymnasium. Lily paired up with me and we started to spar. She pointed out Delta Cameron to me so I knew who he was. When training was over Lily told me to follow her up to Delta Cameron. “You didn’t tell me you were that good,” she complimented me as we walked. “I’ve been training for the last five years,” I said. “Yeah. Me too and you just made me look like a noob,” she said. “Good. Hopefully your Delta saw some of it then,” I said as we approached him. He was a tall and muscular man. You would have to be cut to be the head of pack’s guard. He had tanned skin and dirty blonde hair that was messy on the top. He was wearing a t-shirt and gym shorts. His shirt was pulled tight against his chest and arms. My mouth began to water as I gazed at him. “Delta Cameron, this is my friend, Leona Farr. I have a letter of request for her to transfer to our pack. Could you pass it on to Alpha Hank, please?” Lily said. “Leona. Hmm… You’re a pretty good fighter. I was watching you out there,” said Delta Cameron. I tried not to blush. “Thank you, Sir,” I replied. “I will give it to him. It shouldn’t be a problem. I will let you know tomorrow,” “Thank you, Sir,” I said again. “Thank you, Delta Cameron,” echoed Lily. Lily and I grabbed out bags and headed out of the gym. We went back to her house and hung out until she had to leave for guard duty. I went to bed early since she was gone. That night I tried to fall asleep in a happy mood; excited for tomorrow. It didn’t last. I had the same nightmare that I often had. I was running through the territory at my old pack at night. I was frantically searching for my parents. The town was full of people but they weren’t exactly alive. Ghosts sitting, floating, walking around. They didn’t really seem to bother me. I was mad that I couldn’t find my parents’ ghosts. I would see the ghosts of people I knew who had died but not my mom or my dad. I kept running through the pack barefoot in a panic. I would wake up out of breath and drenched in cold sweat. It was always the same. A ghost town full of the people except the two I wished I could talk to just one last time.
