Katy
I don't know if It was the excitement of starting my new job or maybe it was something else. I found myself waking up extremely early and got ready for office. I remembered last night event. My mom was supposed to leave as early as possible. But, here I am quarter to seven yet, I'm ready to leave. Amy is still in bed since she won't be leaving for school any time soon.
I made some noodles as breakfast which will be much easier for them to warm up with the leftover sauce, and made a hot tea with toasted bread for myself. By the time I'm done eating breakfast and also washing the used dishes, it was almost past seven which means getting to the office won't take me so long. I would arrive as early before 8am.
Great!
Taking the necessary things I need, which are not even much. Considering my first time, I don't know what to take. I took a notebook and pen for maybe jotting and then began readying to leave. The door to Mom’s room flung open, she was dressed into a casual wear. A handbag on one and a medium sized trolley on the other.
“Morning Mom” I commenced as calm as I could. I don't want us to be on bad terms. Seeing her all normal kind of reassured me.
“Morning dear” She answered approaching me. What I didn't expect from her is to embrace me into a hug. I can't remember when last I rested in her embrace. Ever since Dad was around. We were once living happily until Dad got into a trouble and everything wasn't normal as before again. I wrapped my arms around her, feeling her warm embrace.
“Why the hug? It's not like you're leaving us forever” I ushered
“Is it a crime to hug my daughter without a reason” She responds back. We stayed in that position for a good two minutes before I pulled apart. “I’m sorry about last night. I should have think first before talking. I'm proud of you. I promise when I come back I will be a good mother” I didn't know if it was how she said it but for some reason, I trust her words. I feel some kind of reassurances.
“Alright” I answered. “I made some breakfast. Maybe it's still warm you should eat before leaving”
“Thank you dear. Are you heading out already?” She asked accessing my dressing. I was dressed into a pair of white loose shirt and straight skirt. I know it looks weird. That's the only sane clothe I have in my closet. As soon as I get paid, I will go for some shopping.
“The shirt kind of look off. Don't you have something fitted. Something -”
I was quick in cutting her off knowing where her words are heading to. “Mom. I know you're a fashionista but it's my first day. I know the dressing looks weird but I'm more comfortable in them”
Her eyes didn't leave my body. Maybe looking for more explanations. “You need to go for shopping. And when I say shopping, a serious one. Let's see..” She dipped her hand inside her handbag taking out a card.
“What’s this for?” I asked.
“What did your eyes see. Buy some nice clothes for yourself”
“You don't have to. I can-”
“I have to. You and Amy are my family. If I don't take care of you, who will. I admit the past few weeks had been hectic for you but I promise to make it all better. Trust me when I say that, I will be a good mother” I was left speechless with her words. Mom herself saying all that?
Taking the card from her outstretched hands, I slide it inside my bag. “Thank you Mom. I will be on my way. Wish you safe journey”
“You too sweetheart. All the best. And don't worry about Amy, I will see her out before leaving”
By the time I was outside, I heaved out breath I didn't know I was holding. For some reason, I felt light-hearted. Are things finally getting back to normal? I got a job, my mom is finally getting back to her normal self. What else would I ask for?
Our surrounding area was as quite as always with few people passing by. Everyone is inside his house. Maybe some are still sleeping like my lazy ass sister. Getting a taxi didn't take me more than five minutes. I gave him the address to the company. And we drove away. I arrived at the office at exactly 7:50am. Still early. As I made my way towards the entrance door, I met with a new face. Last time he wasn't there.
“Morning Miss” He greeted politely.
“Morning too” I ushered back with equal politeness before alighting inside where I was met with Michelle caking her face with make up. As soon as she sees me a smile graced through her face. “Morning Katy. You're here early”
“Yeah. Its my first day I can't afford to be late”
“That’s true. Actually, Mrs blaydes likes punctuality. I think you're going to get into her good book soon” I smiled in return. “So, Mrs blaydes said you will show me around” I added.
I literally flinched when she smacked her forehead. “It slipped off my mind. Thank goodness Mrs blaydes isn't here to witness it. Let's me just apply this lipstick” I formed my lips in a thin line and waited for her to finish off her make up before she showed me my desk and also explained some works to me.
After she left, I was left staring at the whole place. This will be my working place from now on. I will work hard so that it'll last longer. The vibration of the telephone from the desk snapped me out of my reverie. Reaching for it, I placed to my ear. “Katy speaking”
“Morning Katy. Can you come to my office”
My work starts now! Perks of having a boss under you. I just hope the woman won't be as strict as I'm imagining her to be.
