A soft music was playing on the background. The kind of music that will soothe your mind. The room was a bit dark as the sunlight illuminate through the office. By the side seated a pile of papers scattered everywhere. I let out a hiss for the second time, rubbing my thumb over my temples. I've been working on one thing for over an hour without finding the sole solution.
A knock came through the door making my eyes to avert to the direction of the door. The person on the other end got in without me giving the permission. “If I'm not mistaken, it was barely twenty four hours since our bickering on how to knock before you enter my office”
Instead he made his way to the visitor seat facing me and sat himself down. I stare him down with my eyes. “I don't think I'm talking to a deaf man. Am I?”
“Chill man. You know I won't heed to your words right”
“Behave well. You're in my office and I'm your boss” We've been friend with Christian since our childhood days. His father and my father are best of friends. They do almost everything together. Building the company, bringing it to success. Our bond is not like our parents. We fight, bicker around and play around but when it time to be serious, we put everything aside.
“You might be my boss but you should also know I'm one of the biggest investor in this company. So I would like to say, you should behave yourself too” I throw him a glare in return before proceeding to my work letting out another hiss.
“You know asking for help won't hurt right?” He commenced again.
“I don't need your help. I'm capable of solving my problems on my own” I reached for the mug beside me finding it empty. When did I finish off the coffee?
I dailed my assistant office from the intercome. “One cup of coffee please. Make it hot”
“Why not two?” Christian said. I spare him a small glance. “Why don’t you go back to your office and order your secretary around. I'm not you servant”
“Easy man. Just this once” He fake pleaded making me to snap my eyes shut and opened them again boring them into his. “Let me ask you one question” I commenced.
“Go on” He crossed one leg on the other.
“Why do you like disturbing my peace? Why can't you allow me to work in peace? Just yesterday you almost expose me in front of my father and now you're disturbing my work. Can't you just leave me alone for a day. Just one day” I waited to see a reaction from him. A reaction to show he's indeed listening to my words. Yet, a smirk was the only thing forming on his face. I wish I could slap that smirk off his face.
I snapped my eyes shut and opened them again. “Okay. Just get out. As you can see I'm busy now”
“Not until you tell Katherine to bring two cups of coffee and I want mine sweet unlike yours. Bitter and tasteless” I didn't know what to say to him. I only stare at him. He surely knows how to make me short of words.
“Go on. Make the call” He ordered resting himself back. I reached for the telephone my eyes not leaving his.
“Katherine, make it two. With sugar in one” ending the call, I heaved out a sigh. “Happy?” I asked letting out a forced smile.
“Ofcourse. That way I would keep your secret safe without letting your father to know about it”
“Don’t you even try to. If even by a slight mistake my father finds out I spent a big fortune on a party, you and I both know how it'll end” the only answer he gave me was a shrug. The guy is playing with fire. I know how to revenge for that.
“I won't promise you that but for now, I will keep my mouth shut”
“You-” the words didn't make themselves out when a knock came through the door. It must be Katherine.
“Come in” Christian answered. My mouth was left open at the man’s braveness. It is because we've been friends since childhood that he doesn't fear me a bit. A lot of people knew not to even cough in front of me. They're afraid of my presence. Yet, Christian is different. Even my strict father knows how he can be.
My assistant, Katherine walked in dressed in her tight pencil skirt. I'm beginning to have this thought that she's wearing all the right clothes on purpose. I think I will have to set things straight with her. I can't afford to divert my attention half to half during working hours. “Here’s your coffee sir. It's a hot as you want”
“Thank you Katherine” She doesn't have to wait for me to usher her out. She alighted for the door Christian’s eyes pursuing her. “Stop ogling at my staffs”
Knowing fully what my words meant, he cleared out his voice before reaching for the coffee taking it to his mouth. “Jesus!” He exclaimed pouring out the liquid from his mouth. Almost destroying my papers
“What is wrong with you man? Had it been this coffee spilled on my paper, you would've gotten a good talk into your brain”
“Sorry man. I couldn't help it. The coffee is too hot. I didn't know your assistant knows how to make sweet coffee like her”
“Mind your language” I took my own cup to my lips. As soon as the liquid touches my lips, it devour my tongue.
“I don't see the goodness in liking black coffee”
“As much as I don't see the goodness in liking sweet coffee” I throw back with a roll of my eyes. I glanced at my desk watch seeing quarter past three. I have a meeting by three forty at a cafè.
I cleared out my desk. Gathering the ones I'm done with in one place and the ones I'm yet to finish on the other side and rise to a standing position. “Where are you going?” Christian voice revamped to my ear as I neared the door. I slightly turned around with a little small on my face. “I’m going away from you. As far away as I can” with that being said, I unlocked the door and alighted away.
