Katy
“What? Why?” Amy bombard her with the questions yet, I could only stare at her reading the expression on her face. Mom going out of the country isn't a new thing to us. Heck, I'm even surprise she informed us before hand. Sometimes, she just leave without notice or anything.
“I was invited to a party by one of my friends and it's very important for me to go. So... I'm leaving as early as possible tomorrow” She stated as if it was the best thing for her.
I didn't say anything for the time being letting the potatoes to digest in my stomach. And she went ahead to serve some for herself when I finally speak up. “I got a job”
For a split second, I saw the surprise look on her face. Maybe she wasn't expecting me to get a job this soon. “Really? Do they pay well?”
“Mom”
“What? I'm just asking. You can't just work anywhere like that. You need to get hired in a big company with a stable income. They're so many well known company out there that-”
“Mom” I rose up to a standing position. I was beginning to get pissed. “One thing you need to know is, getting a job in a big or successful company isn't as easy as you think. Heck, getting the job itself isn't that easy. The least you could do is to appreciate my hard work”
“Katy, but-”
I was quick in cutting her off. “I know what you want to say but I don't need to hear it. Safe journey to you. I know it's not necessary for us to meet in the morning” I didn't wait for what she had to say when I aligted away, taking my plate with me. I might be pissed, but I can't be angry with my food. My food is very important to me.
Closing the door shut behind me, I dropped the plate on the vanity table, raking my hand through my hair. No matter how I try to have a normal conversation with her, she messes things up one way or the other. And the one who regrets my actions later on. I mean she's my mother. No matter how bad she is, I shouldn't threat her anyhow. I should learn how to control my anger. Even if not for me, I should for Amy. She's too young to experience that kind of thing.
Talking about job, I was supposed to call Darnell as soon as I get back home. It slipped off my mind. I glanced at the dumped plate, I kind of lost appetite. I will warm it for later. I unplugged the laptop from it's socket and curled myself atop the bed. I inhale and exhale out a deep breath before pressing the call button. It was as if she was expecting my call. “What took so long? I've been literally waiting for you call. So, shoot” She boambard all at once.
“Okay, so the interview went well. I got the job”
“Oh my God! Finally! I knew you would be able to pull it off this time around. I'm so happy for you girl” I know right? Everyone is happy for me getting the job when they don't know the schemes underneath.
“Thanks Darnell. But I'm not sure if you know about it? I mean do you know what the company are into?” I should at least ask if she did knew about the marriage thing before recommending me to the company.
“Yeah. They're travel and tour company. It looks interesting. Even though you won't be going around the country, you would be able to meet new people. I like that” I heaved out a breath I didn't know I was holding. That means she doesn't know about the whole thing.
I glanced at the door for any sign of Amy. I can't risk her hearing about my lie. “That’s not all you know” I whispered. Her brows creased in confusion. “Is there some kind of secret in the company? Are they not legit?”
“Calm down. I will tell you everything but promise me you won't shout”
“Why? Did you get-”
I cut her off immediately. “Just promise me you won't shout” I know how Darnell can be.
“Okay. I promise. So shoot”
I took in yet another deep breath. “So....”
“Oh my god Katy, tell me you're joking” She asked now pacing around her room after I told her about the whole marriage thingy.
“Have I ever lied to you about something like this”
“Wait... I'm even confused in this. What type of rule is this. I mean must you be married before you get the job. It's not like it's one of the best company and I didn't know about it. She didn't tell me about it. Though she's already married, I didn't think about it. I'm sorry Katy”
“No Darnell. It wasn't your fault. I made the decision myself. I just cannot let the opportunity pass me by”
“Still, I didn't know it's going to turn out like this. I should've confirmed first”
I let out a small smile. “It’s okay. You've done enough for me. And I know nothing will go wrong”
Her face fell at my words. I know she's blaming herself for it but I made the decision myself. Whatever problem that is to arise later on, I know I will be the one to bear the consequences. “I only have to work hard and earn the pay”
“Right. Nothing will go wrong. Congrats girl” We converse for some time before calling it a day. Darnell made me promise her that she should be the first person to know if something is to go wrong.
I surfed the net for a few minutes, before taking the leftover potatoes to the refrigerator. Amy was splattered on the floor with textbooks in front of her. She's a bibliophile. She reads novel in the afternoon and study in the night.
Not wanting to bother her, I slowly made my way back to the room but stop. I should check up on mom like I always do every night. I gently pushed her door open. The room was dark. The only light is the one coming from the lamp lying on the night stand. While mom’s sleeping face was glowing with the lamp light. “Goodnight Mom” I muttered before slowly closing the door.
