Chapter 2 meeting Landen

1902 Words
Sera went for a run. She needed to clear her head. She put on her ear buds and played her favorite Playlist. She loved those old rock songs.. She was an 80's girl at heart. Sera jogged down past her old high-school and down to the park. She loved to run around the wooded trail. It was a great release for her, she didn't even need to think about anything. She turned the corner and ran right into a woman walking her dog. Sera felt that sensation. That pull that would cause her to turn around and talk to a perfect stranger. She didn't even fight it this time. She pulled out her ear buds and jogged up to the woman with the dog. "Hey, got a second," she asked as she was jogging. The woman shook her head and walked faster. Sera upped her speed and got in front of her. Tell her that it wasn't a suicide, it was an accident, the male voice said to Sera. Sera swallowed hard. "Um. I'm supposed to tell you it was an accident, not a um... she said it quietly in almost a whisper, a suicide." The woman stopped walking, didn't say one word to her. She took out her mace and sprayed Sera right in the face. Sera yelled, holding her hands to her face and backed up, she fell to the forrest floor. She held her face and tried to breath. Gasping for air. "Ahhhh. It burns she yelled!" "Oh gosh, that's not good." She heard a man say as he suddenly approached her. She wasn't sure it was a real man, or one in her head. She stayed bent over with her hands over her face, trying to catch her breath. The man came forward now-"Okay a real person," she thought. He kindly handed her some water and told her to pour it over her burning face. "Ahhhh, not helping,"she yelled. The man poured another bottle over her face and eyes and she slowly got her vision back. He was tall and kind of chubby. He had red hair and a red short beard. He smiled." Better?" She said,"Uhg, no, tell a woman a secret from a dead relative and get pepper sprayed. No one warned me that might happen, thanks alot spirit!" The man chuckled then. He asked her her name. "Seraphina Haven." He held out his thick hand,"Landen Shanesy." He pulled her to her feet and asked her if he could walk her to her car, or call her an ambulance. She shook her head-no. "You know, my mother was a bit Fey now," he offered. Sera asked him what he had meant by that. "Well the Irish call it fey, kinda like being psychic." For some reason she totally trusted this kind stranger. She felt an instant connection to him. For one thing, he didn't think she was crazy. Also he had a nice laugh, it was a deep rolling giggle. He made her smile through her obvious pain. Landen asked her if she knew of any good Irish pubs in the area. He had just moved here from the Boston area. He had accepted a job at a radio station. "Midnight music mania, ever hear of it?" She gushed,"I love that show, the one where they play oldies and Halloween dance music?" He smiled and nodded. "Well. I'm the new host." Sera wiped her eyes and shook his hand. "Very glad to have you here!" She would become his very first friend here in Seattle. Sera and Landen walked to his car. When they got closer to Landen's blue Mazda she saw the dog walking lady and someone else. It was a police officer. She approached his car with Landen walking beside her. "I guess she called the cops on you," he said with a slight Irish accent. She pursed her lips together and continued forward. The dog barked seeing Sera and Landen. "That's her!" The woman pointed and moved to get into her big suburban, acting all afraid. The police officer turned around to face Sera. . She couldn't believe her eyes. It was Jason Blaze. Her school boy crush. The same Jason that had driven over her leg, breaking it in two. He had also broken that school girl crush that she'd felt for him all those years ago. Landen leaned in,"Girl, he's a hotty cop!" Sera shook her head. She wasn't sure about that anymore. After the accident he hadn't even apologized to her. His family just cut her a check. It was enough to get her through her first 2 years of college and covered her medical expenses. Pain and suffering money they called it. She wondered why he had never spoken to her again. He wouldn't even look her way during their high school graduation ceremony. Everyone had been watching her, it was like seeing a train wreck as she had made her way up to the stage to get her diploma- using those awkward crutches. Now, all these years later.... Jason was confused, the woman with the dog said that she was attacked by that blond girl and she had to resort to pepper spraying her. She sure didn't look like an attacker. Most attackers wouldn't be approaching the cops afterward. He noticed she had a slight limp when she was climbing the hill to approach him. He felt like he was punched in the gut when he saw it was Seraphina Haven and some red bearded guy. Probably her husband. He pulled up his utility belt and stood to face her standing there, he squared his wide shoulders and stood with his legs apart, like he was on ship-sea legs. Sera said," Hey, Jason. You're a cop now huh?" He didn't smile. He said," Maam, there was a complaint that you attacked Mrs."....he looked down to see her name on his report. " Mrs. Connelly,"he continued, "She said that you ran up behind her, cussed at her and then yelled at her to kill herself." Sera shook her head,"Wow! That's not even" ... Landen cut her off. "Hey, Jason... is it? Well, I saw the whole thing. I was taking a walk, I'm Landen by the way- he gestured holding his fingers to his chest-I'm the new radio host for Midnight music mania? Ring a bell? No? Okay." Landen shook his hand side to side to indicate that it didn't matter. Officer Blaze did smile then. Sera's husband was a funny guy, he thought. Sera felt a flood of emotion seeing that smile again, she had melted inside. Landen stopped talking as well and stared at officer Blaze's handsome grin. Landen shook it off and continued. "Sera didn't attack Mrs. Corny. Ah Connelly. Sera here- just went to move past her, as far as I could tell. The psycho just sprayed her for no good reason. I ran over, dumped water on her head and well, here we all are, together here in this fine park of yours." Sera put her well manicured hand on Landens arm to stop him from rambling. "Officer Blaze the truth is that I had a message to give to her, she did not like what I had to say, so she rudely pepper sprayed me, right in the face." He felt a little sea sick, hearing her address him as officer Blaze. Trying to pull it together, he asked,"Hmm. what was the message Sera?" Feeling more uncomfortable just saying her name, Jason had wanted to run from her as fast as he could. She responded,"Ah well I whispered it to her really, it was Ah, personal." "Okay, okay." He nodded as he took notes, not looking at her. He said, "Well, it doesn't look like there was any real crime here today so your both free to go." He turned around to leave as quickly as possible, not wanting to talk to Sera any further. Sera felt anger bubble up in her now. She walked over to Jason and grabbed his arm. "Wait just one minute!" He stopped in his tracks feeling her warm hand on his arm. He had felt those old feelings of protection he'd had for her on that day- the day that he had run her over with his car. It was real, he told himself with a sense of bewilderment .. he had thought at the time of the accident that it had all been a boys dream. He remembered that moment- he felt himself falling now, he let her hold onto him, as he fell backwards in time. He saw it vividly. He was now holding her there in the pouring rain, as she lay moaning with a broken leg. The accident that he had caused by driving too fast in the rain. She surprised him when she jumped out of that ditch and landed onto the road in front of him. He had swerved to miss her. He skid right for her. He tried to stop, gripping the steering wheel. He grimaced as he felt his car bump up as it drove over her. He thought the worst. He had felt so bad. He ran out to check on her. He saw her leg bent back, the bone was sticking out of her jeans at an odd angle. He called 911. He sat there with her, he felt like he was holding her now to keep the rain off of her-as they waited for the ambulance to arrive. He felt a connection to her, it was electrical. Like she had some how belonged to him. He blinked several times as he slowly came back to current time, looking into her soft brown eyes. He swallowed hard. Now, all these years later, she was somehow here again. He felt it all over again- that same feeling that she belonged to him, the moment that she had touched him. She was married now, he told himself, looking at that red headed man standing next to her. Officer Blaze took a step back, removing her arm abruptly. He put his report away and wouldn't look her in the eye. Fearing that she would see right through him. Sera moved her hand back, feeling stung. She touched her head, emotions swirled inside her. It left her feeling very tired. All of his emotions ran through her as she had touched his arm. She felt empathy for him. Though she was the one who had suffered from the accident, he had suffered too. She took a step back and needed to sit down. Landen saw her distress and held onto her. Officer Blaze moved away to his car and got into it. Landen asked her softly, "You too had a thing and he dumped you?" She shook her head. "Way more complex than that." He said, "Ah, tell me all about it at dinner tonight. What time and where should I pick you up?" She smiled. She had found a true friend. Someone that didn't shun her for her weirdness. She smiled at him. He saw that she was very beautiful then and swallowed hard. "Seraphina! you got it going on!" She put her head down and blushed. She gave him her number and kissed his cheek. "Something tells me we are going to be good friends," Landen nodded, he was smitten with this beautiful fey girl. He nodded his head.
