Chapter one: The accident.
The past..... Seraphina took her time after school, she went to the library to get a history book so she could study for her final exams. This added to her already heavy load of books. As she left for the long walk home, she ran into her teacher Mrs. Allen. "Hey, Sera did you find what you needed?" Sera nodded and thanked Mrs.Allen as she turned her back to the door and pushed it from behind. She ran right into Jason. "Oops, sorry I didn't see you there," she apologized. Jason was her school crush since kindergarten. He was polite but otherwise kept to himself. She gave him a sunny smile, her soft blond hair that was contained in a pony tail bounced when she walked. She looked back to watch him walk away. Her mind had been on Jason, that was her excuse why she had been more distracted than before. As she walked down the busy street, she stayed to the side of the road, near the ditch. She struggled to walk with so many books in her arms. A very fast car sped by, almost hitting her. She jumped in the wet ditch to avoid being hit. Sera dropped her books and was bent over trying to gather them before they got ruined by the rain water. When she jumped out of the ditch, she didn't see the small car swerving towards her from behind, it was skidding in the rain. She screamed as it bumped right into her, knocking the wind out of her. It skid to a stop only to slide it's back tire over her leg, breaking it. She screamed in agony. The car pulled over and Jason Blaze jumped out. He was holding his head and reaching out his hand to pull her up. It was no use. Her leg was broken, she couldn't move. Jason ran and called 911. He tried to shield her with his body, to keep her dry from the relentless rain fall. It was the only time in her life that she had been that close to him and she was in so much pain, she didn't enjoy it one bit. The ambulance arrived and scooped her up, taking her to the hospital. It had been the most traumatic event in Seraphina's 18 years of life. Sera's parents had arrived and stayed with her until night fall. She was on her own. She had a hard time getting comfortable, but finally drifted off to sleep. Some time in the long night she heard someone calling her name. "Sera, Sera I'm here with you." She recognized her Aunt Evelyn, her favorite aunt. She smiled when she heard her voice, she felt warm and comforted. "Auntie Evy? How did you get here?" Her aunt lived in Montana. Her aunt told her that she was crossing over now and that she would always be with her. She felt immense sadness at the thought of her auntie leaving, she felt her slip away into a bright light. Sera knew that she was dead. With her next breath she opened her eyes, blinking a few times. She had to tell her mother. She knew her aunt had died. Her mother Carol Haven answered on the first ring. "What is it, are you Okay Seraphina?" Sera informed her that aunt Evy was gone. Carol gasped-"Who told you?" Sera explained that she had visited with her in a dream. Her mother was dumbfounded. The only one who had know about her passing were Carol and her husband Silver. Sera cried then. "So it's true?" She grabbed her head then feeling a horrible pain. "Mom, it was her head, she had a terrible head ache, the worst in her life." Carol was very quiet then. How did her daughter know all of this. She had just learned about it herself a little while ago. Carol informed her that yes, "Auntie Evy died of a brain aneurysm." They had decided not to tell Seraphina because of her car accident. Currently.... It had been 4 years since Sera had broken her leg. She still had a bit of pain whenever it rained. She was running to answer her phone, hoping it was a call back from an employer. She had applied to 7 different job positions this past week. She hadn't heard from anyone. It was Georgia Miller, a friend from college. "Get your ass over here now!" She yelled at her. Sera said,"Is he there now?" Georgia cried in a high pitch,"Yasss!" Sera grabbed her jacket and jumped into her small sedan and drove the 15 minutes to Middleton resturaunt where Georgia was working as a waitress. .Sera sat down at a booth, seeing her friend she waved. Georgia said,"Two o'clock." Sera peeked her head around the booth to see Jim Castle- the 5am weather guy. He was eating a burger and scrolling through on his cell phone. Sera was smitten, as were all of the girls in the Middleton restaurant. She was giggling and texting Georgia about his hair. "So cute!" Jim Castle suddenly stood up, he was coming towards her now. Sera felt a pulling on her senses, "Not now!" She heard someone say, Let Jamie know that I see him. "Oh, not now!" She thought. The voice in her head said, Please! Sera stood up and threw her napkin on the floor just as Jim Castle had walked by. He bent down and absently handed it back to her. When her hand had touched his she cried out- Jamie, please forgive me. I did the best I could. Daddy was wrong to shun you! Jim Castle looked at her as he sat down hard in the seat across from her. Sera blinked a few times and apologized. She winced and spoke to him now, "It's just that I talk to people that have passed on." She continued, "Do you know an A name, Annie, Amy, or A something? She wants me to give you a message." Sera leaned in close. She couldn't say it out loud. She asked him for a pen. He handed it to her with his mouth wide open. She wrote on her napkin, he was wrong, being gay is not a good reason to cut you off. I am so sorry. Sera felt static electricity move through her, she moved her hand forward uncontrollably and touched Jim Castles -the weather guys finger tips to her own. He shuddered. Tears formed in his eyes. "My mother's name was Annabelle." He got up from the table and ran out the door, running from her. Georgia sauntered over to the booth. "Geesh, what did you say to him, poor guy. Looked like he saw a ghost." Sera shrugged, she felt wiped out. She put a five on the table and left to go home. She didn't remember driving to her small garage apartment located at her parents house. She went to bed and slept until dinner time. Sera's mother came to get her for dinner. She took one look at her and knew that it had happened again. "Seraphina, come eat. Tell me about your day." Sera had filled her in on the traumatic encounter with Jim Castle- yes the weather guy. Carol wrote the encounter down in her journal, she had been documenting all of Sera's encounters and keeping notes on them-mainly because Sera often forgot specifics of these events over time. It was a way for her mother to confirm that whatever this gift was that her only daughter had, it was real. Sera had lost countless friends over the gift. Most people thought she was an actress who made things up. Not many would believe her. Those that had special encounters with her tended to believe her, though. She seemed to know oddly specific things. Like Jim's mother had always called him Jamie. Sera had 3 older brothers, all of them had moved out of the house now. She was the baby. They all treated her so. Her father, Silver walked into her room after dinner. "I think we should have a brain scan done I have a colleague that will do it for us." "Sure daddy, whatever you want." Sera's father was a doctor. He was a general practioner- Dr. Silver Haven. Sera loved his name. She hugged him and told him to go ahead and schedule the scan. He nodded, he was just worried about his kiddo. He would feel better once she'd had a scan done. He was in denial of her special gift. He didn't like when his wife Carol took notes, it was like she was encouraging Sera. Sera didn't care. She was tired of them fighting about it though. She called her friend Georgia. "Hey, sorry about today." Georgia shrugged."It was just weird, that's all." Sera asked her if she was coming over on Saturday like they had planned. She told Sera she wasn't able to come over now. Sera said that she understood. She'd lost many friends to her weird behaviors.
