Chapter 2: I Already Know

*Derek*

               I walked out of my dad’s office not feeling it today after the conversation that we had, I didn’t even know how I was going to bring it up to her. Hurting her was something I never wanted to do, I didn’t know how she was going to take the news when I told her. She has been training her whole life to be a powerful Beta, and this might crush her. I walked around the pack lands searching for her, I finally found her near a small creek, she was watching the water while she sat on the grass and took up the cold November sun.

               She looked so beautiful with her chocolate brown skin, her black curly hair shinning under the rays of the sun. I was contemplating turning around and ignore the subject for the moment but then she turned and smiled at me “hey Derek, what are you doing here?” she asked me. We had been friends since we were little since our parents were friends as well, actually all of their friends kids were our friends and we got along so well, we were all best friends with each other, it was nice, and I loved our little group.

               I walked close to her and sat down on the grass staring at the water and avoiding her gaze on me “I was looking for you actually” “you don’t sound so good, is everything alright?” there was worry in her voice, she placed a hand on my shoulder and squeezed it a bit making me look at her. I didn’t know how to start this conversation with her. I sighed and decided to talk but without looking at her, I couldn’t see the disappointment in her face, I wouldn’t be able to handle it.

               “I had a talk with my father this morning… he said that I would have to-“ “stop” I heard her say, I looked back at her, and she had a smile on her face “I already know what you’re going to say. My parents had this talk with me a few years ago actually” to say that I was surprised was an understatement, this whole time she already knew that I would have to choose someone else as my Beta “then why did you keep training?” I asked her confused “are you seriously asking me that?” she laughed, and I nodded “come on Derek you know me, you have always known that I have wanted to be strong and capable of defending myself. my dad is a Beta, and my mother was the strongest wolf of her age, that’s why she was sent to watch over your mom all of those years ago. I want to prove myself as well, I don’t want to be a wolf that needs saving, I want to be able to save myself and others.”

               I relaxed a little after her confession, how could I have forgotten that she wanted to live up to her parents reputation. Both her parents fought alongside mine against their enemies to protect all of their loved ones “I’m sorry I forgot” I said to her “no worries, you’ve been super busy with your Alpha training, but you should really take a break. How about we sneak out of the pack and go to a party somewhere?” she asked mischievously “seriously?” “Hell yeah I’m serious! come on, the vampires are having a huge party and we should all go and when I say all, I mean our whole group.” I smiled up at her “let’s do it, I’ll text everyone” “perfect, we should all leave by ten.”

               I left her by the creek and walked back to the pack house, as I was getting closer to the entrance I was tackled to the ground “huff, what the f**k!” I yelled and turned to look at Ciara just as she was about to punch me on the face “how could you?” she yelled “what the f**k are you talking about? What did I do this time?” I asked super confused “Vanessa!” she screamed at me again a single tear falling from her face. I took both of her wrists and held her in place to keep her from punching me “it wasn’t my decision, besides, I talked to her, and she’s known for years, she accepts it” I said looking away from her.

               “What?” Ciara asked confused “I told you” Leon walked up to us and helped me off the floor “you knew?” I asked him “I’ve overheard mom and dad talking from time to time about it” he shrugged, and I sighed, great I’m the last one to find out. “Whatever, she’s always known, and Ciara here didn’t believe me, but anyways you look determined about something” he raised his eyebrow at me. I used the link that the three of us shared to talk to them I didn’t want to risk anyone listening in on our conversation.

               “Vanessa told me there is a party tonight in Vampire territory, she wants all of us to go” I smiled at them as they all smiled back at me “mom and dad will never let us go” Leon said, “that’s why we’re sneaking out” both of their eyes lit up and smiled even bigger than before “this is gonna be great, I’m gonna go look for Vanessa” Ciara ran away in search of Vanessa probably to make plans to get ready.

    Leon turned to look at me after we watched her leave “so have you chosen who your Beta is going to be?” he asked with so much curiosity “yeah actually, I have but I won’t reveal it to anyone until I’m ready” “ugh fine” he sounded disappointed, but I wasn’t going to tell him. We walked into the pack house and headed up stairs to our rooms, I needed my phone so that I would be able to text everyone about the party tonight.
