Lola couldn’t hold back her tears anymore when her mother grabbed her hand. She forced a smile and said, “Mom, I’m okay. It doesn’t hurt, really.”
Judy wept at the sight of her daughter’s pale face and trembling lips. Now she hated herself even more for being emotionally unstable.
Glancing at the luggage by Lola’s feet, Judy asked, “Why do you bring the luggage with you? Where’s Blake?”
Lola’s body stiffened, not daring to tell her mother about her divorce. “I missed you, so I asked Blake to take me here. He's very busy with his work, so he left after driving me here.”
Judy nodded, then she tried to pull Lola into the room. But Lola took a few steps backward in a hurry. “Mom, I’m not going in. I am just so glad to hear your voice. I don't want to stay to trigger your memories... You must take good care of yourself, mom, and call me whenever you need anything....Blake must still be around, I’ll call him to pick me up.” With that, Lola hurried away with her luggage.
Watching her leave, Judy was full of guilt. Her mania could strike at any time, and if the two of them stayed in the same room, Lola might get hurt. So maybe it wasn’t a bad thing that she had gone.
After walking out of the community, Lola stopped at the curb. The world was huge, but she was homeless and had nowhere to go.
“Hey, girl! Get out of the way. You’ll block the cars if you stand there.” Hearing the security guard shout from behind, Lola immediately walked to the side while apologizing to him.
Shivering from the chill wind, she felt her way to the guard shack, then couched at the corner, and buried her head into her knees to keep herself warm.
When Roger saw her curling up there like a lost child, he felt a twinge in his heart and got out of his car with a sigh. He could tell that something was wrong as Lola was reluctant to tell him which building she was going to, so he had been waiting outside. When he saw her walk out listlessly, he knew that she must be in difficulties. “Lola!” Roger held up an umbrella for her to keep out the snow.
When Lola raised her head, Roger saw her tearful eyes and red face from crying. She quickly wiped her tears away and asked in surprise, “Doctor Lance? Why are you still here?”
Roger crouched down as well, looking sympathetically at her. “Lola, if you don’t have any place to stay, just go back with me.”
Lola shook her head. “We're not friends or family. How can I trouble you like that? Don’t worry about me. I’m just a little tired, so I want to rest here for a moment.”
“You know how to play piano, don’t you? A friend of mine opened a restaurant and is recruiting a pianist. Do you want to give it a try? He’ll provide free food and accommodation.”
“Really?” Lola’s face lit up, but she was still a little hesitant. “I… I can’t see. I’m afraid I’ll cause your friend trouble.”
“Don’t overthink about it. I’m sure you'll be up to this job.”
…
Blake was waiting outside of the ward at this time. He was very upset whenever he thought of the scene where Lola was with Roger just now. While he was pacing about distractedly, his mother, Miranda, arrived. She never liked Lola and thought Dani from a rich family was her ideal daughter-in-law.
When Miranda walked up to her son and saw his sullen look, she rolled her eyes, saying, “Blake, I heard it was because you went out to chase Lola that Dani fainted. She had just woken up from a three-year-long coma. How could you do this to her?”
A flicker of melancholy appeared in Blake’s eyes. He answered after a long silence, “Got it.”
