“Doctor Lance?”
“Yes, it’s me!”Roger helped Lola up and brushed the snow off her coat. “It’s snowing so heavily. Why did you come out alone? Where’s Blake?”
Lola said in a low voice after a short silence, “We got divorced.”
Roger’s hands trembled slightly when he heard that. He then composed himself and asked: “What happened?”
“He told me that he loves another woman. How can I continue to live with him?” Lola had a bitter smile on her face.
Although she was smiling, Roger could tell how sad she was. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have told you about Dani.”
Lola raised her head with tears in her eyes. “No, you didn’t do anything wrong. I want to thank you for telling me the truth. If it weren’t for you, I would still be kept in the darkas a mobile blood bank. Now that I’m divorced from Blake, I don't have to give that woman any more blood.”
Her bitter smile made Roger’s heart wrench. He brushed the snow off her hair and said softly, “Good, you don’t have to do that anymore.”
At this point, Blake arrived. When he saw Roger stroking Lola’s hair, he stared at his hand with a grim look. Roger had been treating Lola’s eyes for three years, so he knew him. A man's gut told Blake that Roger had feelings for Lola, which made him fly into a rage instantly. “Lola!” he shouted. When he was about to walk over, his phone suddenly rang. Blake stopped in his tracks and pressed the answer button. “What’s up?”
“Mr. Harvey, where are you? Miss Aiken suddenly fainted!” The maid’s voice sounded anxious.
Blake looked in the direction of Lola with a frown, thinking that with Roger around, she should be safe. He then retraced his steps.
Lola’s long eyelashes trembled slightly when she vaguely heard his voice. She tugged on Roger’s sleeve and asked, “Is Blake here? I heard him calling me.”
Watching Blake leave in a hurry, Roger sneered. “No. It was just the wind.”
Hearing that, Lola became listless again. She forced a smile and bit her lip hard. All he had in mind was Dani. How could he come out to find me?
“Where are you going? I can give you a ride.”After putting her luggage into the trunk, Roger made her sit down in the passenger seat and fastened the safety belt for her.
Lola hesitated for a few seconds before she gave him the address.
Roger started the car, heading to the community she told him. When they arrived, he took out her luggage and was ready to help her up the stairs. “Which building? I’ll walk you there.”
Lola shook her head. “Thank you! But I can go upstairs on my own. You must be very busy. Go back to work. I’m sorry for troubling you for so long.”
“Are you sure you can do it?” Roger was still a little worried.
Holding against her luggage, Lola nodded hard. “Yes.”
Now that she was insisting, Roger didn’t say anything more.
After going upstairs, Lola stopped in front of an apartment. She took a deep breath and knocked on the door.
“Who’s it?” A woman’s gentle voice sounded.
The moment Lola heard the familiar voice, she choked up and couldn’t utter a word.
Then the woman inside opened the door and saw her, she froze on the spot.
“Mom, it’s me!” Lola called out in a trembling voice.
“Get out! Go!” Judy gave her a shove and yelled, her eyes turning bloodshot.
Lola fell and the back of her head hit the ground so hard that she felt a little dizzy. In spite of the pain, she struggled to her feet and turned to Judy. “Mom, calm down. I’m leaving right away.”
Judy suffered from intermittent mania after knowing about her husband’s death three years ago. She looked normal, but seeing Lola would sometimes trigger her memories of the painful past.
Seeing that her daughter was about to leave, Judy suddenly came to her senses. She reached out her skinny hand and grabbed Lola, tears streaming down her cheeks. “Lola, I’m sorry! I was delirious again. Did I hurt you? I’m so sorry!”
