Chapter 2

VERA’S POV “Take her to the kitchen! Make her work until morning," she ordered, and my heartbeat quickened as the Elder grabbed me roughly by the arm, dragging me away... I was pushed into the kitchen by the elder, and at that moment, the door to the kitchen was immediately shut, leaving me no escape. I growled in anger and disappointment. I hadn’t expected the interruption from the blonde-haired lady who called herself the Luna. I leaned on the kitchen counter for support as my gut still twisted in pain from the brutal punch she had delivered. I couldn’t stand on my own. As I remained there, my eyes wandered around the kitchen, and I noticed I was not alone. “Welcome to the White Shadow Pack,” the middle-aged woman who stood by the entrance to the food store spoke up. Her eyes were filled with pity for me. I couldn’t respond to her yet as the pain persisted. “The Alpha has never hit any maiden before. I guess you must have really provoked him. Maybe it’s because he just lost his father in the war against your pack,” she said, assuming the Alpha was the one who hit me. I shook my head slowly. “The Alpha didn’t hit me, it was his wife...” I murmured, raising my head slightly, just in time to notice the shock that spread across the woman’s face at my words. She seemed surprised by what I had said. “What are you talking about, girl? The Alpha doesn’t have a wife yet. That brat Lenora must have told you a different story out there. The Alpha only showed interest in Lenora after losing faith in finding his fated mate,” she said, and my brows furrowed in realization. “The Alpha hasn’t even made any plans to marry her yet. She assumes she’s the most qualified since the Alpha lets her share his room. She’s always so desperate to show her place; now I know why she hurt you so badly. I’m sorry,” she said. This made sense. Alpha Draven didn’t seem truly attached to her. Even when she gave the orders to throw me in here, I could tell they weren’t in unison. It seemed like she was doing it for herself, to show him she was capable and had his interests at heart. “What’s your name?” she asked. “Vera,” I said bluntly. “My name is Debra. I’m the Alpha’s cook. I assume Lenora sent you here as punishment. I can see that you’re hurt. Just rest while I do the work,” she said, but before she could finish, the kitchen door burst open and she trembled in shock. Debra’s head fell, and she quickly moved back, putting a distance between us when she saw who walked in. It was her—Lenora. She was boiling with rage as she hurried toward me. I believed she overheard Debra offering to help me out of the punishment. “You weren’t about to accept that offer, were you, b***h?!” Lenora said, and before I could speak, she grabbed a fistful of my hair and shoved my face into the dirty, stagnant water in the sink. I struggled against her grip, grabbing onto her dress as I fought to breathe. I could hear her cruel voice through the water as she spoke. “I told you I’d clip your wings. I’m the Alpha’s wife, the only woman he has ever loved. That gives me the power, the right to treat you however I please. Do you hear me?!” she yelled, pushing my head deeper into the water. I couldn’t breathe. I was at the point of opening my mouth in desperation, but then I’d swallow the filthy water. Just as I felt my breath slipping away, she yanked my head out of the sink, leaving my face dripping with water. My wolf, Ira, was growling in my head, eager to be let out to fight. I could smell Lenora’s wolf and knew I was stronger, but I couldn’t afford to jeopardize my plans. If I retaliated, I might lose the chance to complete my mission within the pack—killing Alpha Draven with the blade, the only blade capable of killing alphas due to the poison. “Now, get to work. If I find even a stain on these plates, I’ll make sure you go without rations for a week,” she said, roughly pushing me to the floor before storming away. What she didn’t know was that I wouldn’t be in the pack long enough for a first meal, let alone a week. I would flee the pack tonight, after killing the Alpha. It would all happen tonight. Turning around, I saw that Debra had left the kitchen. She was afraid of Lenora and couldn’t offer the help she’d wanted to. I picked myself up from the floor and grabbed the sponge, scrubbing the plates carelessly, just passing time until midnight, when I was sure the Alpha would be asleep. Then, I’d sneak into his chamber and have my revenge. ------- Time passed quickly, and I noticed that silence had settled over the entire pack. There were no movements, and I could barely hear any sound. I turned to the clock hanging on the wall behind me—it was midnight. I dipped my hand into the folds of my clothing, retrieving the hidden dagger. My heart pounded in my chest as I walked out of the kitchen and made my way to the corridor. I was afraid of what might happen if I made a mistake, but my heart was consumed with thoughts of revenge. I had watched his father murder my pack members. It may not have been him, but he was no less of a devil. All I felt was rage. In no time, I found myself at the window leading to his bedroom. Through the window, I could see he was alone, making this the perfect opportunity. He lay on his bed, sleeping. My heart wouldn’t stop pounding as I slid the window open and climbed in quietly. I walked slowly toward his bed and stood at the edge, where I had full access to his bare chest. Beads of sweat formed on my forehead as I raised the blade, pointing the tip at his chest. I hesitated only for a second. The next thing I knew, Alpha Draven’s eyes shot open, meeting mine as I held the blade to his chest. He gripped my hands tightly and my eyes widened in shock. “You’re one of the slaves. How did you get in?” he asked, snapping to alertness. I made an attempt to stab him quickly, but before I could move, he doubled my speed, grabbing me by my waist and flipping me onto the bed as if I were a piece of paper. “Vera, the girl from the Dark Moon Pack. You’ve come to kill me,” he said as he climbed over me, pinning my hands above my head. My heart raced in fear as I stared at him in shock. “I knew you were a rebel and wouldn’t bow to me. I should’ve had them kill you along with the others,” he said coldly, as I struggled to free myself from his grip. He moved even closer, his chiseled chest pressing against mine. “I will never bow to you. You’re evil, and I’ll end you tonight,” I said confidently. His jaw tightened as he glanced away from me to the blade that had fallen onto the bed when he overpowered me. He knew what the blade was. I could see it in his eyes—he knew it was poisoned, meant to kill alpha wolves. He understood how dangerous it was. “How do you plan to do that from this position? Maybe you’re the one who won’t leave this room alive. Have you thought of that, Vera? Maybe you’ll end up dead, just like my father killed your pack,” he murmured in a soft but dangerous tone into my ear. A chill ran down my spine immediately. Ira snarled in my head at his boastful words. In that instant, I felt a surge of energy course through my veins, and I kicked him off me, causing him to fall to the floor. While he was disoriented, I quickly grabbed the poisoned blade and rushed at him. He struggled to regain his footing, but just as he turned around, I plunged the blade into his chest. He froze in shock, pain taking over his expression. I withdrew the blade, now dripping with blood, thinking it was over. But I thought wrong. At that very moment, a sharp pain struck my own chest at the same spot where I had stabbed Alpha Draven. Clutching my chest, the blade slipped from my grasp. “Ahhh!” I groaned in pain. I had stabbed Alpha Draven, and he was on his knees, dying, but an equal amount of pain pierced my heart the moment I stabbed him. I couldn’t understand what was happening. Fear and confusion paralyzed me. As my vision blurred, I lost my footing and collapsed to the floor from the pain. Just then, I felt as though I were falling into a trance, and in that state of confusion, I had a vision. It was unlike anything I had ever seen. I saw her standing opposite me—Kora, the witch from my pack who had cursed and poisoned the blade. “You died in the field with the other pack members,” I murmured to Kora, still clutching my chest in pain. “Why am I seeing you? Am I dead?” Kora looked sad as she stared at me. “Not yet, but soon. If the Alpha dies, you die too,” she said grimly. I was lost, unsure of what she meant. My heart started pounding in fear. “What are you talking about, Kora? The blade was meant to kill alphas, not me,” I mumbled, feeling my life force draining as the pain increased. “Yes, but not this alpha. You shouldn’t have used the blade on him. Killing him means killing yourself, Vera. Your hearts are bound,” she said, and my brows furrowed in horror. “Bound? What do you mean bound?!” I yelled at her in my head, but she vanished without another word. At that moment, I opened my eyes and saw Alpha Draven coughing up blood. Then, I touched my lip and saw blood coming from my mouth too. I was experiencing the exact same thing happening to him, like I had been poisoned too. Before I could register the shock, the door to the room flung open, and Lenora walked in with countless guards. She must have heard the noise and realized I had come to hurt the alpha. “Kill her, now!” she commanded. . .
