Chapter 3

VERA’S POV Before I could even make a move, I saw the guards rushing in, their eyes filled with bloodlust. My heart leapt as I realized I was too weak to fight them off. The pain in my heart was worsening, like a deadly disease, but I forced myself to get up. I quickly grabbed the blade from the floor and dashed toward the open window through which I had climbed into Alpha Draven’s room, my heart pounding. “Don’t let her escape!” Lenora shouted to the guards, who chased after me immediately. Seeing only one way out, I threw myself out of the window, not thinking about the risk of landing from that height. “Vera, don’t!” my wolf, Ira, shouted in my head, weighing the risks. But I knew I couldn’t hesitate. I had just stabbed an Alpha, and he was writhing on the floor, dying slowly. I would be killed if they got a hold of me. My body tore through the air as I fell from the mansion’s height until I hit the ground. I groaned in pain as my left ankle shifted. I knew the guards wouldn’t be foolish enough to jump after me; they’d take the stairs. With that in mind, I picked myself up and leapt on one foot. “Seal the gates! No one leaves the pack!” I heard the head guard shout. He was a beta by all indications and second-in-command to Alpha Draven. I had never been so afraid. Knowing the gate was sealed, I realized I was trapped within the pack’s territory. I made it into the forest within the pack and hid behind a tree, my heart pounding violently as I watched the pack’s omegas scanning the area, running like mad dogs in an attempt to find and tear me apart. As someone who was not from the White Shadow pack, I knew that my scent would stand out once they were near enough to where I was hiding. “I think the poison is spreading through your chest. I think you’re dying,” I heard Ira’s voice in my head. For the first time, her voice was shaky. She was afraid of dying. As she spoke, my heartbeat quickened, and my trembling hands went to the fabric covering my chest. I pulled it down, revealing my chest, and a gasp escaped my lips in horror. There was a green vein beneath my skin, moving slowly toward my heart. I panicked, and unknowingly, tears slipped from my eyes. The thought of the poison reaching my heart scared me. “No, I can’t… I can’t die!” I sobbed, feeling a sharp pain as the poison crept toward my heart, slowly but steadily. “How is this even happening? I stabbed the Alpha, not myself. Why am I feeling his pain? Why am I dying with him?” I murmured, my last sentence breaking into a low tone as confusion overwhelmed me. I couldn’t comprehend anything. Suddenly, in the middle of the confusion, I heard a calm, chilling voice in my head. It wasn’t Ira’s voice. The moment I turned around, I saw her again, and I was startled. It was Kora. I could see her, but I knew I had fallen into another trance. She was dead, and there was no way she could appear to me physically. “If it reaches your heart, you die!” she voiced coldly, a warning. “Kora, please… I can’t die,” I cried, and she stared at me with a grim but sad expression. She said nothing for a while, which only heightened the fear in my heart, making me feel like the case was lost and nothing could save me. Kora was the last person killed in the pack. She used to be like a mother figure to me and was the one who told me stories of how my parents died on the day I was born. She was a woman with many secrets, often speaking in cryptic words that I usually found hard to understand, but for once, I hoped she would clarify what was happening. “Kora, please, I need to know what’s happening to me. I took your blade after you were killed. I wanted to avenge you, but…” I began, only to be sharply interrupted by her voice. “This wouldn’t have happened if you’d paid more attention to your emotions,” she said. “You wouldn’t be experiencing this if you’d used the blade on any other Alpha. Alpha Draven is special to you; your hearts are bound. If one heart suffers, the other shares the same fate,” she explained. I shook my head, unable to fully understand. This was the first day I’d met Alpha Draven. I didn’t even know him before this encounter, so how could he be special to me? What was she talking about? I was lost. I looked down and saw the poison spreading. “Have you heard of the prophecy of the bond?” she asked. I shook my head. I knew that wolf bonds existed once wolves found a potential mate and underwent the mating ritual. This was something consensual. But the bond prophecy? That I hadn’t heard of. “Vera, my dear. Have you thought about why you are 19 and haven’t found a mate yet? This is because you will be incapable of mating with anyone aside from the one whom the moon goddess chose for you from the very beginning. The prophecy of the bond is true, and although it is very rare, it seems to be what is pulling you in this direction,” she intoned in a grim voice that sent chills down my spine. The reason why I had no mate was because I had never thought of anyone that way, and even those that wanted me, I turned them down without any reason. I believed it was all my doing and wasn’t controlled by any stupid prophecy like she was talking about. “You are a special kind of wolf, and the prophecy of the bond is meant to work for only someone like you,” Kora said, my heart racing from the confusion that settled in my mind. “Kora, what are you talking about? You are confusing me! I still don’t understand what you mean by the wolf bond prophecy and how it is connected to what is happening to me right now… I don’t want to die, please,” I cried, tears falling freely. “You have been destined for each other. If one dies, the other dies too. Stabbing him means stabbing yourself because you are two hearts merged together by the moon goddess even before birth…” she said, and my eyes narrowed. “Alpha Draven, he is your fated mate!” Kora declared, and my heart stopped in shock.
