Chapter 1
VERA’S POV
The bell rang, signaling it was time for us to meet the Alpha of the White Shadow Pack. My heartbeat quickened, but not from fear—pure rage and hatred coursed through my veins. My dress was covered in dirt from the struggle during the war against my pack, and though I had survived, everyone else I grew up with was gone.
I had tried to fight my way out to avoid being captured and brought to the enemy’s territory, but I stopped struggling when I realized I could use the opportunity for revenge.
I clutched my dress tightly, trying to contain the rage building inside me, but there was no calming the storm. The moment I had been waiting for was finally here. I would be meeting the Alpha who destroyed my pack. I wasn’t terrified to meet him; I couldn’t wait to bury my blade in his chest and watch him bleed for everything he had done—wiping out my entire pack.
“It is time,” a man’s voice broke through my thoughts. He entered the room, his gaze sweeping over me and three other young women like me.
But I wasn’t like them. Aside from the fact that I was 19 and they appeared to be in their mid-twenties, they were all from the Oak Moon Pack, a neighboring pack to my own, the Dark Moon Pack. Our packs shared the same boundaries, but in one night, both had been wiped out by the cruel Alpha of the White Shadow Pack.
The Alpha of the White Shadow Pack? I couldn’t even remember his name. All I wanted was revenge. He had given the orders to extend his territory, breaking into ours, and when we tried to defend it, the fight didn’t end in our favor. Though I had been orphaned at a very young age and had no family, I still had friends lost in the chaos.
I also lost Kora, who took on a motherly role in my life after I lost my parents. Kora was a witch wolf, and even with her powers, she couldn’t save herself. I watched her die, and that was when I swore to make him pay – the alpha of the White Shadow Pack.
I got pulled out of my thoughts the moment the man spoke again.
“Do I need to repeat myself? I said it is time to meet the alpha!” the old man said sternly, seeing that none of us had moved. The other maidens trembled in fear as they hurried out. I couldn’t move that quickly, though; I had a blade carefully tucked into the fabric of my top, resting just above my chest, and one wrong move might cause it to slip out.
This wasn’t any ordinary blade. It was poisoned by the witch of my pack, Kora. I had sworn to bury it in the heart of the Alpha tonight, and this was my only chance.
“Do I have to drag you there myself?!” the Elder yelled, shoving me from behind to follow the other three girls in front of me. I clenched my teeth, praying to the moon goddess that the blade wouldn’t slip out.
Soon enough, we arrived in front of a massive door within the Alpha King’s palace. The Elder pushed the door open and entered with his head bowed. At this point, the rage within me was building, waiting for the perfect moment.
“Alpha, here are the maidens we found after the fight!” the Elder announced even before we stepped inside. I was the first to walk in, curious to finally meet the face behind the chaos that had swallowed my pack. But when I looked toward the throne, I froze.
My lips parted as I beheld the face of my enemy. He was tall, muscular, and incredibly sculpted. His hair was neatly brushed to the side, and with that significant jawline and piercing blue eyes, I found myself utterly lost in his appearance.
Is this the Alpha of the White Shadow Pack? I was confused.
I couldn’t believe it. He looked flawless, nothing like the devil I had assumed he would look like. He appeared to be around 23, and I had thought Alphas were supposed to be in their fifties, though I had never seen him.
As if to clarify my confusion, the Elder spoke up with a strong voice.
“This right here is Alpha Draven, the new Alpha of the White Shadow Pack. His father died in battle earlier this evening, and he has taken over. He has the power to decide your fates,” the Elder said.
The young man standing there was clearly the son of the Alpha who had earlier waged war on my pack and wiped it out, but now his father was dead. I guessed he had suffered a severe injury during the fight, which led to his death. My plan didn’t involve his son, which brought about a little hesitation.
But I needed to remember that he was still the son of the devil who had destroyed my pack, and my plans could not falter. I had promised to avenge my tribe. The entire White Shadow Pack was my enemy, and Alpha Draven was their new head.
“Don’t think of backing out, Vera. The Alpha must die tonight. His father killed everyone you’ve called family. They killed Kora,” my wolf’s voice rose in my head. Ira, too, wanted revenge. She was growling to be let out, but I knew she couldn’t stand against the Alpha; only the blade I held could kill him.
“Be patient, Ira. I want him dead too. Just let me handle this,” I assured her, and her voice receded from my head.
“Elder Francis, are they the only survivors you could find?” Alpha Draven finally spoke. His voice was cold and calm, sending shivers down my spine. For a man who looked that young, his voice was so deep.
“Yes, Alpha...”
“The three girls on my left are from the Oak Moon Pack. On my right is the last survivor of the Dark Moon Pack,” the Elder informed him, and I could see anger rising within Alpha Draven. A lump formed in my throat. Just as I was waiting for the perfect moment to stab him with the witch’s blade and watch him die, I could also see that he was blaming us for his father’s death and had bad intentions toward us.
"Someone from your packs killed my father during the war. I don't know whose pack it is, but I'll make you all suffer," he said coldly. “From this day, I’ll take you as servants, slaves within the packhouse, and you shall serve me.”
“Kneel!” he yelled, and the other three girls fell, almost face-flat from the force of his command. I trembled a little, fear creeping up my spine momentarily, but I regained my composure. I refused to kneel. My fists were clenched at my sides.
At that moment, I realized that the son of a devil might be a devil himself. He wasn’t remorseful about what his father had done to my pack. Instead, he was planning to lord over me too. I tightened my fists and stood my ground.
“I see why you are the only survivor of the Dark Moon Pack. You like to play tough, don’t you?” he said, his voice dropping to a low tone as he strode slowly toward me. His tall, imposing figure approached, but I kept my head bowed, my mind calculating. I had planned to pull out the dagger and plunge it into his heart if he got close enough.
Just as he was near, he paused when the door to his inner chamber opened. A beautiful young woman walked out, shoulders high, a frown on her face as she moved between Alpha Draven and me. Her face twisted into a frown immediately.
“What do you think you’re doing? Disobeying the Alpha?” she asked. At that moment, I flared; Ira begged me for control. But I was only an omega, and I couldn’t reveal my intention to kill the Alpha while I was outnumbered.
The only way I could get my revenge was with a one-on-one encounter. But in that situation, I couldn’t possibly move fast enough to kill the Alpha. He definitely would be faster and would counter in a way that would ruin my plan.
I was drawn out of my calculative thoughts the moment I heard her voice again.
“Are you deaf?!” she shouted. Before I could even respond, she raised her hand to strike my face. My head snapped to the side from the force of her hit, and pain shot through my body, but I clenched my teeth.
“You have no right to touch me! Who do you think you are?!” I screamed at her face, raising my head in anger. At that moment, she gave me a sly smile.
Before I could react, she delivered a brutal punch to my gut. I felt myself wrench, coughing up blood as I fell to my knees in pain.
“You want to know who I am? I’m Lenora, the Alpha’s bride, your new Luna, and your worst nightmare!” she declared.
"You’ll be punished for disobeying my husband. I can see you have wings, and I’ll clip them. I’ll so humble you..."
