CHAPTER 11 Near the Westchester Tower Hotel, a red-tailed hawk soars above the treetops. Lisa watches it zoom in on an unsuspecting squirrel, dive swiftly, and capture the small creature with its talons. “Daydreaming again?” Trace joins her on the deck, holding a steaming mug. “I don’t know. I guess I’m wondering if we’re just prey—expendable feed for an unnamed monster. I’ve been watching that hawk. He waits for the right moment to attack. When he does, he doesn’t miss.” She shudders and hugs herself. “Someone’s watching us, Trace. We take all the precautions we can and try to outsmart this predator, but he finds us anyway. We have what he wants, even though we don’t know what that is. Somehow, he needs us to get this unidentified item. That’s the only reason we’re alive.” Lisa takes
