Cora finished the last nibble of her fig. Her slender hands wiping crumbs from her dress, she took a glance around the small room she shared with her sister. Most omega lived in cottages scattered across the castle ground. Portia and Ringo were head cook and stable master, which allowed for them and their family to live inside the castle. The twin’s room was basic. It fit their two beds , had a small armoire and desk set. A wash basin sat next to a simple fire place. Perhaps the best part of the simple room was the large window. It had a red velvet seat which overlooked the Onyx Lake. Cora sat down just as the bedroom door sprung open. It was her sister, looking rather flustered which was pretty unlike Nova. Cora raised her eyebrows at her twin. “Trouble in an otherwise reasonable world?” She teased. Nova scowled at her. “ No, no trouble, I just ran to get here , had to make sure you still had your pretty head sister” Nova quipped back. Cora laughed and scooted over so her sister could join her. Together they stared out at the Lake. The setting Sun reflecting off the ripples of black. “Do you ever wonder what’s beneath the waters?” Cora pondered, never breaking her gaze. Nova shrugged. “If the stories are true and it’s cursed or poisonous, I find it hard to imagine there’s any life, and if there is, it must be full of ugly creatures.” She replied. She turned to look at her sister, she marveled at how mesmerized Cora was. She couldn’t help her self and pinched her arms, “creatures waiting to eat your toes I’m sure.” She chuckled as Cora jumped, finally breaking from her trance. “Whatever Nova. Some day I am going to dive in and prove you and all the rest wrong.” Cora remarked.
Nova smiled at her sister. Neither knew who was the oldest. It wasn’t written on the short note, but she often felt it must be her, the more reasonable of the two. She could sense the extra fire in her twin. “What’s wrong Cora?” “You’re more on edge then normal” she noted. Cora turned to look at her, and as Nova suspected, her sisters face had a small etch of worry in it. “What is it?” She pushed. Cora sighed.
“Tonight in the dining hall, I caught the Alpha looking at me.” Cora whispered. “Nova his eyes, the evil behind them, they tore through me in a way I’ve never felt from him before.” She shook herself as though trying to remove the feeling she had. “He scares me, and with our birthday so close, I just …” her words trailed off, no explanation further needed.
Nova stepped over to her sister pulling her in to a hug. “Don’t worry Cora, soon we will have our wolves. The King is Alpha, but we will be able to better protect ourselves if the bastard should even dare to breathe our way.” She said soothingly. She felt Cora nod her head in agreement as she broke away. “You’re right” her sister replied. “I guess it’s just the first time I’ve been so directly in his sight, it disgusts me to think about him.” Cora said. Nova nodded in agreement. Cora offered her a reassuring smile and walked back over to the window seat, she motioned for her sister to join her.
“What do you think our wolves will look like?” “I wonder what their names will be.” Cora said. Her voice a little more steady.
“ I imagine we will have some cliche names such as Rose and Lily and both be the normal drabby brown of Omegas.” Nova snorted.
Cora laughed at her sisters face. She had this uncanny habit of scrunching up her nose when she giggled. Her eyes lit up as she twirled the opal dangling from the thin chain around her neck. Cora always felt she was probably the oldest. While more spontaneous then her sister, she was certainly more fierce. Nova’s gentle nature always provoked the protective side in Cora. Watching her sister giggling at her own words, Cora knew in that moment that no matter what happened to her , she would always keep her sister safe. She turned her head back toward the window. The sun was setting down over the Lake. It looked even more haunting and enchanting as the final rays touched red on the black waters. No matter the cost, she thought to herself, my sister an I will break free from this place, and it’s Alpha.
